Article: What happens when you die?

If you want a picture of death in South Africa, you need look no further than the Salt River Forensic Pathology Laboratory in Cape Town.

It is one of the busiest forensic pathology labs in the country, processing largely inquest and homicide cases from around 35 police and satellite stations in the metro, spanning from Fish Hoek to Atlantis.

I've been there a few times testing biometric scanners on corpses. Not a fun experience. Unnatural deaths go to Salt River ...

Mitten: Whispering... "I see dead people"

At one point the mortuary was so full that blood was pouring out into the streets into the city drains. ( There was a newspaper report at the time a few years ago)

Thanks for that delightful mental image:|

That was because of a faulty drainage system and the blood was getting into a river that ran through a settlement, down to a public beach and into the ocean.

I had completely forgotten about that.

This pleases Alessa Gillespie.

by mortuary standards, salt river is not too bad for a mortuary, it is actually quite bright & sunny.

the really grim one, has to be the gale st. mortuary in durban

That's because bloated, half autopsied corpses are floating down the sidewalk drainage channels and blood is seeping out 24/7 365 so Yes it's bright and sunny because the corpses and the accompanying bodily fluids have left the building.

And Debbin? Well It smells of curry and gunpowder.
