Article: Wouter Basson sentencing

Sentencing proceedings of apartheid-era chemical warfare expert Dr Wouter Basson are expected to start in Pretoria on Monday.

The sentencing had previously been postponed twice.

I wonder how many health professionals the HPCSA has not reprimanded and not pursued relentlessly for years after they performed elective abortions of healthy babies. Perhaps they care more about politics than life.

Money and power. Life comes a distant third. Or more likely forth, after 'protecting their own image'. Actually, probably no better than fifth place, 'filling their own pockets' is definitely more important than 'life'.

I'm not anti-abortion, I just don't trust professional organisations. I've read the SAICA "ethics" code, and it's more about covering your own ass and protecting the reputation of the organisation, than providing ethical services to your clients.

What's this got to do with him being sentenced? Do you really think Basson being pursued was simply politics?

A 'Nazi' hunt, for sure. Not to be balanced with the 'liberators' atrocities.

/Wondering when historians will reveal Churchill's desire to drench all of Germany in poisonous gas

Which is really a strange assertion because if anything Basson looked more politically protected than vilified. Likely done to prevent him going off and making chemical weapons for some hostile country elsewhere, but now his knowledge and relevance are obsolete. The state should have appealed his criminal acquittal that was a crime in itself.

Well political or not, he can't be a doctor while also having been involved in the large-scale production of Mandrax, cocaine and teargas, of weaponising teargas, and of supplying it to Angola's Unita leader Jonas Savimbi, cross-border kidnappings and making cyanide capsules available. I agree with R13..., he wasn't being pursued for political reasons, he was being protected for political reasons. He should be sitting in jail today, imo.

correction of FUD
The State did appeal the acquittal, particularly at the Constitutional Court, and were ultimately unsuccessful
in the process the NPA introduced much mayhem and uncertainty into the legal system

Politicized trials and criminal proceedings where there is political interference tend in civilized legal systems to result in an accused escaping the ambit of accountability and resonate general dysfunction in the legal processes.

- mayhem is a deliberate word choice
