Article: Zimbabwean cigarette smugglers robbed

Three Zimbabwean men have been robbed four boxes of smuggled cigarette in Musina, Limpopo police said Sunday.

"It is alleged the three Zimbabwean men were carrying four boxes of smuggled cigarettes in a BMW when they were stopped by seven men travelling in a BMW and a Condor who demanded the smuggled cigarettes," said Lieutenant Colonel Mohale Ramatseba.

I likes.... but what the hell was in the four boxes... cos ain't no way it was just cigarettes.

it's part of the tobacco industry's fud campaign against "illegal" cigarettes (like the bsa, but with ciggies).
problem is i can't find an illegal cigarette anywhere. believe me, i've asked.
the way the "tobacco institute" goes on, you'd swear illegal cigs are behind every bush waiting to pounce.
can we please lose the ridiculous ad campaign now?

Read an article a couple of weeks ago about the police stopping a bakkie loaded full of ciggarete boxes. When the police questioned the guy about all the boxes of ciggies his excuse was that he is a chain smoker. :D

Haha. He should have said he owns a spaza shop :p ;) :D

the only thing this daft campaign is going to do is create awareness of illegal cigarettes and thereby create a market for it.
perhaps the tobacco pr guys have nothing better to do with their time (with the advertising laws being so stringent and all).
the more people they "catch" the more it really will become a problem.

i really would prefer it if our law enforcement officers occupied their time with better things, like learning correct crime scene and arrest procedure.
then maybe some of the actual criminals who commit real crimes would stand a better chance of conviction.
just saying.

I know the campaign is a bit overboard but they sell millions of illegal cigarettes every year here. Most spaza shops and side of the road traders stock illegal cigarettes. It's very easy to find them.. how hard could you really have tried, gone to Spar to ask for the illegal kind?

I've found illegal cigarettes at a small local shop, they're obvious because they sometimes come in different packaging and cost R12 for the big brands. Anywhere in a township you're probably buying illegal cigarettes. There is already a massive market for them, who doesn't want cheap cigarettes when you're poor. If you really think the campaign is only going to create a market for these illegal cigarettes that you can't find then you couldn't be further from the truth man..
