Article: Zuma no confidence motion tabled

I think people with an IQ higher than room temp will second that motion.

Leader of the opposition Lindiwe Mazibuko tabled a motion of no confidence in President Jacob Zuma in the National Assembly on Thursday afternoon.

The motion was brought on the grounds "that under his leadership the justice system has been politicised and weakened; corruption has spiralled out of control; unemployment continues to increase, the economy is weakening, and, the right of access to quality education has been violated".

The motion was "mandated" by eight opposition parties, including the African Christian Democratic Party, the Azanian People's Organisation, the Congress of the People, the Democratic Alliance, the Freedom Front Plus, the Inkatha Freedom Party, the United Christian Democratic Party, and the United Democratic Movement.

Briefing the media ahead of Tuesday's 2pm sitting, Cope leader Mosiuoa Lekota -- flanked by leaders and representatives from the other seven parties -- said the motion was prompted by a "mounting crisis of leadership" in South Africa.

It was being brought in terms of Section 102 of the Constitution.

Lekota said the joint decision was triggered by the Marikana tragedy; the "appalling Nkandlagate scandal"; the government's failure to deliver textbooks to school children in Limpopo and the Eastern Cape; the downgrading of South Africa's credit rating by two major rating agencies; a "mounting disrespect" for the country's Constitution and judiciary; the growing number of unemployed; and, a "rising tide" of corruption in the public service.

"All of these collectively point to the reality that ours is a country which lacks decisive leadership and vision," he said.

Go go parliamentary republic. Highly unlikely that this will get near to passing, but still good that it is possible.

This is why a democracy needs a strong opposition!

Two possible problems unfortunately. First, unfortunately with a 65.9% majority the motion is unlikely to be passed with the necessary 50%. Second, this may just galavanise the "ANC or nothing" mentality of some voters. They may sense the danger from outside and pull together and unite.

We can hope for the opposite I suppose, that the cracks that have been showing will split the party....

Um, Lindiwe is parliamentary leader, not leader of the DA. More SAPA uselessness...

What do they mean ???
We've made so much progress - having a grade 5 learner become president and earn millions ...
Man can marry not only 1 wife but 4, in future we will advance it to the number 11.
A land where we now can dream of building/upgrading a 250 million rand house with other peoples money..
Pfft these agents and their white tendencies/clevereness...

Well, if nothing else, it is important to get poor performance on the record, which is exactly what this motion does.

Dont think it will be passed as mentioned earlier...but it is about time someone stood up and said "Enough you corrupt ***!"

To him. This equals giving him the finger basically in the assembly....and it is great that so many parties are behind this.

Lol just checking, for a second I thought you were talking about Mazibuko.

If Zuma goes, who replaces him? I liked Motlanthe but isn't he buddies with Julias?

Motlanthe seems just as bad to me, Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma looks like she could have been half decent.

Oh, you're one of those clever twisters who are getting too clever for your kulcha!

It must be a secret ballot or this will never pass.

Who do you think are all the options for new CEO and Chairman of the country?

Actually, wouldn't it help the ANC to vote somebody like Zille in, just to shoot down anything she does and blame it on her?

What we really need is a referendum to split the presidency into a head of state and prime minister role and let the people vote for the head of state similarly to how it's done in France (a form of alternate vote).

It doesn't matter. There are a few who would be great and pretty much everyone else couldn't be worse. My dog leaves things on the lawn that would be a better president. And smell better.
