This brings me to something that I don't understand. Sorry if this view have already been discussed....

We pay R680 per month for ADSL line rental, which according to me excludes any International bandwidth. Basically, we pay R250 (if you use Telkom) for 3Gb International bandwidth, and if you need 6Gb you can just pay another R250 for another account.

Now, my big question is, what is the R680 for???? I know that there is a lot of costs involved in setting up telecomms equipment, but still Telkom says that the high prices is for the expensive bandwidth???

Apart from that, you're still paying monthly for the copper telephone line to you house / business???

Can someone please explain or am I missing something???

You are not missing something... The keyword here is this... and I quote from Steve White's stumbling retort to RPM's press release:

"In lande waar ADSL aansienlik goedkoper is, is dit 'n regstreekse gevolg van onder meer die demografie en geografie van die land, die grootte en ingeligtheid van die mark, en regeringsubsidies, wat tot 'n meer kostedoeltreffende breëband-netwerk lei."

The term "ingeligtheid van die mark" means that the cost is among other factors also determined by how informed the market is... What he is in fact saying (no reading between the lines required here) is that South African consumers are generally not informed and that is why Telkom gets away with the high prices.

Steve White's retort gives us a rare insight into how Telkom operates...

Cheers
Ant

PS. It is true that an informed consumer is more powerful. That is what we are doing here... We (the members of myADSL) are the informed consumers and we will not take this exploitation lightly...

I think Antowan has hit on the truth of the matter.
Telkom gets away with high prices, because the average Joe Public knows no better.
Still not a reason to rip us off, especially since the Major Shareholder, The Government, has a responsibility to its citizens.
Communication should be a fundamental right, not a source of revenue.

Ant, if ever MyADSL needed a slogan, the essence of such a slogan could be found in that statement of yours.

RPM, what do you think about a slogan for MyADSL? - something short & sweet used to reflect the hell inflicted on us by Telkom...

Added: In hindsight, perhaps deflect rather than 'reflect', would've been closer to the double meaning I was aiming for.

RPM, again I say, a very good job all these press releases, and the fact that the media are publishing & paying attention to what you say is a very good thing for MyADSL and the people that read the media articles. Clearly Telkom's goal is to overcharge & misinform the public, MyADSL's mission is clearly to inform the public & help drive prices to acceptable, reasonable levels. (Qualified that a bit before I get accused of saying that we should get ADSL for free)

You have my vote on this!

Hi IC

A slogan/slogans might be a good idea…but it should describe the site’s content and aims…not an easy task. Any ideas will be welcome! It will also be of value if we ever print promotional material…

Regards,

RPM

Slogans:

MyADSL: Where Actions happen !
ADSL:Where Sucktions happen !

"Suckctions" meaning sucking consumer's pocket &wallet

of course any more suggestions are welcome .

Bumper Sticker

Hi all,

A nice concise Bumper Sticker reflecting the MyADSL slogan will definately find its way onto my car...

Maybe run a Slogan competition...but people , we need this very quickly.

I'll go with that 1 ic, with a slight mod ;)

ADSL - Your dream
Telkom - Your nightmare
MyADSL.co.za - Our reality
Yes ok, that is better, but what about this:

ADSL - Your dream
Telkom - Your nightmare
MyADSL.co.za - Telkom's nightmare ;)

Me thinks we have a winner. You think we can it ? :D
Nah, it basically your idea, just had a little help, so unless someone can think of anything more terrific on the ADSL side of things...?

Now, what about an equally good slogan for MyBroadband.co.za - that scares the bejeezers out of the rest of broadband suppliers?
