ASP.NET MVC2 on 3.5 framework

After weeks of (intermittent) trying and obscure error messages, I've got it working on Windows 7:

the key is to go installing a ‘new’ instance, not to add features to existing installation. then there is an option to select SSMSE.

Getting it working on XP at home without internet/ google is the next challenge...
