ASSIA and INTERLEAVING needs to go.

Let me give you some guidance before you beat yourself up on this...

You need to focus your attention on the area where it will hurt Telkom the most. They recently announced a R1 million sponsorship for the Telkom Gaming League. Find the relevant articles and scour them for names of Telkom executives, etc. mentioned in them.

Then address your (valid) concerns regarding latency, which impacts gaming negatively and ask them how they expect gamers on DSL connections to compete on an equal footing with guys on mobile, LTE-A or even fibre connections.

Ask them what steps can be taken to make the gamers happy. Trust me, they know all about the negative impact on gaming...

I have found that this seems to negatively affect users who are sitting 1KM or further from the exchange. I managed to get the optimization removed, but Telkom are obviously reluctant as they will be expecting me to log a call again in a weeks time when things don't work out. You need to follow protocol and keep your cool. It is possible for you as the user. I don't think you will get the entire system removed altogether. Would be nice to have a choice though. Even if you had to accept a disclaimer before hand.

Interleaving affects more than just gamers. It absorbs up to 25% of your maximum attainable rate (speed) depending on the speed you have available to you; it increases the latency of connections which depending on the interleave depth can impact your international speeds by up to 50% in some instances where receive window buffers are set too small on the operating system or scaling isn't working properly, and results in even high sync connections being affected on local speeds; we're seeing an increase in CRC/HEC errors (FEC errors are expected on interleaved connections) meaning as packets drop, receive windows halve on the OS side, causing further decreased speeds. This is why rebooting your machine sometimes helps. One thing I will say: Zyxel modems are being very badly affected - they are not coping with the new technology very well at all.

The ignores the ordinary increase of latency of up to 100ms on interleaved connections due to burst protection on the lines and the nature of interleaving as well. So yes, it's a major cause for concern. In addition, if we want to talk about the ASSIA introduction, it shouldn't require manual intervention to resync a line higher after ASSIA has auto-set a lower profile during temporary line troubles. There's more, but these major gripes are becoming serious issues for Telkom to consider, and one would have expected them to have done so long before...

It's impacting on perfect connections as well. We have 2 perfect test lines in our offices - one has an ASSIA profile assigned and sync nearly halved, with perfect line stats and zero disconnects. It was also switched to interleaved mode and we've seen zero FEC errors which means it is there for no reason. FEC errors are to be expected on an interleaved connection as it means it is doing its job and is there for a reason. No FEC errors on an interleaved line means it's there for the sake of it...

You seem to be knowledgeable on ASSIA DJ, based on the following stats is it actually achieving anything on my 10MB line other than increasing my down sync by 1MB?

Appears to have actually stabilised your line there. So yes, doing it's job. Whether the previous problems were noticeable and of concern to you is up to debate...

Good to know although the only difference I've noticed is in the modem stats and the slightly improved download speed :)
 
FYI, according to insiders at Telkom, ASSIA's increase sync function is disabled on the Telkom deployment, with no reason provided. It ties in with our experience having never seen it increase a customer's sync after an issue. So my guess is this is an asset sweat strategy...

Now you are seeing why I say there is a different reason... There's an even bigger one that this!
 
@DJ are you able to specify an exact date when interleaving was switched on in your area if you do not mind telling me in which area you are situated in?
