Hi guys, I managed to acquire another gtx460 for a steal but have run into issues on my system.

After adding the second card and powering the system on I am greeted by both gfx cards fans spinning up and then down, repeated 5 times, after which the system boots but windows does not detect the second card.

At first I thought it was a PSU issue, but the problem persists in my machine even when using a silver stone 600w and a corsair TX850.

After some time testing, it appears there is an issue with my mainboard running with both pci-e slots populated.

Does anybody have any suggestions as to what can be done about this?

System:
CPU: Phenom 2 B55 X4
Main board: Biostar TA790GXE
GFX: 2x gtx460 1gb

Are the cards identical?

Both are 256bit 1gb cards.

Different brands though.

Both cards test fine and are detected correctly in a different pc.

Forgot to add that updating the BIOS did nothing, anybody have any other ideas?

Sell the nVidia cards and get ATI cards, or get an sli board.

I'd love to, but considering that I basically paid R500 for each card I shudder to think about what ATI card I could get if I sold these two.

Besides, sli comparability is not the issue here, as the second card is not seen by windows or hwinfo and both cards detect fine when in two other systems running non sli boards.

Chances are that using hacked drivers to get them running is not really going to give any benefit on gaming as the SLi/Crossfire solution gives variable results at best.

Sell both cards, save up some and get a single card, ATI this time.

Thanks for the replies gents, I understand that SLI/Crossfire can be a bit of a gamble, but that was not why I made this thread.

My single 460 is ample for my light gaming needs and figuring out why I cant get both cards to detect has become an itch that needs to be scratched.

FWIW, I can now get the system to boot normally without all the fans spinning up and down after having forced the PCI-E slot to GEN 2 in the BIOS.

I also had an old 4850 lying around which detected perfectly with the other slot populated by a 460, so both slots being occupied is not an issue.
