Assistance with Blackberry on Cell C network

Hi all

I would like some assistance please.

I currently have a Samsung i780 Pocket PC Smartphone on Contract with Vodacom.
I use about 300mbs on average per month on device.

My contract comes to an end in February and am therefore looking to get a Blackberry mainly to cut down on data charges.

Cell C currently has a Blackberry 9300 with 3G on the Blackberry All Week 100 package for R199 which includes 100 anytime minutes and the BIS.

Can you please advise as to how the Blackberry performs with regards to speed on the Cell C network and whether I should go for the deal on the Blackberry 9300?

Just a comment - check the price of the 9700 - the screen res is way better.

Also what do u use the data for?
 
The Bold 9700 is on the Cell C Active Chat 220 package for R486 inclusive of BIS.

I use the data for lots of things, mainly:
email, IM (msn messenger, Mxit, Skype, Fring, Yeigo, FB, etc.), internet browsing. All of this on device.
 
we signed up for the curve this month thru cell c - bis hasnt been working since the afternoon of the 23rd.still waiting for cell c and nashua mobile to sort this out.just warnin u bout wat to expect
 
contacted cell c again today,they said they will fix my bis this afternoon.still waiting.been 5 days and no joy.
 
Ok first thing you need to know is Skype does not have a BB app, VOIP Calls via Skype on a BB are not possible unless you use Skype Talk from shape services. There are a few companies working to get a functioning VOIP service for blackberry, most of the new 3G handsets are said to be fully capable, but they are still in their infancy stage and Skype has no short term intention of making skype available to the general public, nor do they intend on making the voip work without wifi on the BB handsets.

If skype as an essential tool then blackberry is not the handset for you, not at least for the next few years.

Skype IM is possible via Skype Talk or IM+ both from shape services, neither are free, IM+ supports almost all the im networks you mentioned in its app as well as push notifications allowing you to remain online with the IM services without actively running IM+ on your handset. Skype Talk allows IM for skype only as well as Skype Calls via a call service, NOT VOIP!!!! You pay to call a local landline number and then skype credit to call other other numbers via skype or just you local call cost to call other skype users.

CranialBlaze, thank you for the info regarding Skype on BB. I had a feeling that it wouldn't be included in the BIS.

Anyway, that won't be a train smash as I use my Skype more regularly on my laptop, so can live without Skype on BB.

For Skype on Blackberry, we use iSkoot. It used BIS (when bis still worked). It does IM, it's free but not sure about VOIP.

iSkoot is an extremely basic version, but it also has no VOIP support. It uses the same call connect service, u pay for a local voice call using ur phone and skype interconnects the 2.
If your looking for a brilliant product then have a look at the 2 options from shapeservices, its 1 of those products that more than deserves the amount they charge. Shapeservices compared to iskoot is like comparing a cellphone with 2 cups and a string.
 
Downloading MP3's and videos through vuclip would be about 20 kbps during the day and between 10 kbps and 15 kbps during the night. Looking back in hindsight, I would rather have taken an android phone through vodacom - you get charged R29 per 250 MB you use. By the way, no BIS for 7 days now.
 
Well my BIS came online yesterday after a week, speeds are still between 10 kbps and 15 kbps at night.
 
That's shocking speeds!
I would've thought that the internet experience on the 9300 would be much faster considering Cell C's new, faster network & because the handset is UMTS 900 enabled.
 
hold on, i must have missed something. the curve im referring to is my wifes BB 8520 curve. (I see I mentioned Curve, wasn't aware that the 9300 also has a curve model).

The phone only has EDGE. I've looked around and found this comment though from this site: http://www.techsmart.co.za/mobiles/smartphones/BlackBerry_Curve_3G_9300_review.html

"Even between different BlackBerry devices the change in speed that 3G brings is not that significant. An impromptu webpage loading test a few years back comparing the Curve 8520 running on EDGE and the 3G enabled Storm surprised us with the Curve actually opening some pages faster. Just a comment on skype for blackberry

There is an official skype app for blackberry but limited to users on verizon network. Calls aren't made via voip but via normal calls.
