Asteroid 2009 DD45 on Monday passed within 38,000 miles of Earth, less than twice the height of the geostationary satellites we depend on for communications, according to Robert McNaught of the Australian National University.

While a direct hit on Earth could be a devastating natural disaster, McNaught said keeping track of asteroids can make a hit "potentially preventable."

"If discovered in advance and with enough lead time, there is the possibility of pushing it off course, if you have decades of advance warning," McNaught said. "If you have only a few days, you can evacuate the area of impact, but there's not a great deal [else] you can do."

It sucks, I though by now I would be with Mr. J and singing halleluiah, by J, I don't mean JZ or JM:D

Would you please not cherry pick the bits of the article that are "bad"

First line of the "article" is below

You had a close encounter with a 40-yard-wide asteroid this week, but the astronomer who first spotted the large rock said it's nothing to worry about.

This was and is NOT an asteroid that will end life on earth... it probably wouldn't even make it to the ground anyway at that size

Horse radish....

This is just the universes way of saying nothing....

stuff happens.. but a 40 yard asteroid probably passes by Earth v regularly, so I'm not entirely sure what the point of that article was.

Tend to agree with you.

If i was the universe i would not even give the world a warning.

Well, no, I mean... come on, how many pass earth close enough to make all of us think twice...

I'm just saying, one day, God could say... "I warned you idiots but you didn't listen"

Ok. What if no one was watching?

god doesnt speak , notice how i use a lower case g, not to give it meaning.

Of the 40 yard size, I'm guessing a LARGE number pass relatively close to earth on a regular basis...

Exactly.

Yip. Approximately 400 - 800 pass by Earth each year.

I am sure you can all look at my thoughts and laugh, hell, I'm laughing, but what I'm saying is, if there is a God - hell, if I was God, I'd have destroyed earth long ago to make place for something better... actually, my landing spot for the asteroid would have been that Middle East area... Sick of all THEIR crap!

Thanks mercurial :) I was going to start looking for the numbers

gdiza : nobody is laughing at you, but we're just showing the logical answer. as for starting over.. god is welcome to.. but why would he waste the energy destroying this place first.. he can just do a better job elsewhere.

We are one of his embarrasing creations ;)

he never created us because he doesnt exist. we where single cell amoebas

gdiza : just a simple question.. how can we be embarrassing to him if he has nobody to impress?.. he's the only god... he can't get embarrassed.

but this is ultimately a discussion for the PD section.... not here... what needs to be discussed here is news24's VERY selective quoting of an article that opens with the line that this asteroid is nothing to worry about.
