Aston Martin readies DBX SUV for 2019 launch

Aston Martin, like Ferrari, is chasing unprecedented sales growth and profits by launching an SUV, due next year

Aston Martin’s comeback is to be crowned by the most radical model in its illustrious history and the flagstone of its expansion: the DBX SUV.

First previewed as a concept in 2015, the DBX’s development is now nearly complete ahead of a planned world debut in around a year’s time, with sales due to start in early 2020.

The DBX — which will compete against the likes of the Lamborghini Urus, Bentley Bentayga, Rolls-Royce Cullinan and upcoming Ferrari SUV — breaks new ground for Aston in several areas It’s the firm’s first SUV, the most controversial of body types for such a brand but also potentially the bestselling and most profitable. Indeed, so significant is the DBX that Aston has acquired a new factory in St Athan, Wales, in which to assemble it.

The DBX will also be the first all-new Aston Martin model launched after the company’s stock market flotation, a formal intention for which was finally confirmed in late August after the firm returned to profitability last year. In a long-rumoured move, Aston Martin is set to offer more than £1 billion of shares, which equates to some 25% of the company, on the London Stock Exchange in the autumn. The initial public offering (IPO) values the British manufacturer at around £5bn and would place it in the FTSE 100. Following its own IPO in 2015, Ferrari’s value doubled to around £15bn a year later.

Aston Martin has changed significantly as a company under the leadership of Andy Palmer, who joined as CEO in 2014. He has brought financial stability to the company and returned it to profit.

Last year, it was in the black for the first time since 2010. Aston’s first-half results in 2018 showed that it recorded a pre-tax profit of £20.7 million.

Palmer has underpinned that growth with his so-called ‘second century’ plan, which is formed of seven models being launched over seven years at the rate of one per year, each then on sale for a seven-year model cycle with various derivatives and special-edition versions launched within that.

The DB11, Vantage and DBS Superleggera have already come out as the first three models in that plan and now the focus switches to the fourth, the DBX, which Palmer says “will shine a torch” to the future of the brand.

The middle model of the second century plan has the greatest potential to bring further growth to Aston, in terms of both volume and profits. It will enter at the heart of the fast-growing luxury SUV segment, aiming to mix performance and luxury like no rival before it.

The design of the car has been finalised, the engineering is almost complete, the tooling is under way and the paint shop at St Athan is around 80% complete. The first pre-production models are due to emerge from the production line in the first quarter of next year.

Palmer said the DBX bears little relation to the 2015 concept car, which was a dramatic two-door with four seats commissioned on Palmer’s second day in the job in 2014, in his words “to get the company aligned to the idea of Aston doing an SUV, which was not obvious then. It was controversial internally and externally but not any more. Others have moved into that space, and Ferrari will. The idea of one has moved with it. You’ll see elements of the design language [from the concept] but it’ll be four doors, not two.”

The DBX will be made more practical than the concept by the switch to four doors, but it will keep the concept’s sloping roofline, albeit a higher one.

Following the trend of the DB11, Vantage and DBS Superleggera, the DBX will get its own distinct front grille design and bespoke styling touches. Sharp lines and creases are understood to be a feature of the side bodywork, to draw the eye as much as possible away from the fact that this is ultimately a more bulky Aston than any before it.

The underpinnings of the DBX have a close relationship with the all-electric Lagonda models that Aston is also preparing as part of the second century plan. The first electric Lagonda is due to be a saloon launched in 2021 and it will be followed in 2022 by an SUV. To that end, the DBX and Lagonda will share their suspension componentry.

“Part of the new vocabulary here is ‘coca’: ‘carry over, carry across’,” said Palmer. “Never start a design with only one application in mind. The DBX suspension goes across to Lagonda.”

Whereas the Lagonda name will be used for all-electric models in the Aston Martin Lagonda family, Aston Martins will adopt hybrid technology by the middle of the next decade, with the DBX understood to be taking the lead in that.

Daimler will provide Aston’s hybrid technology and is also one of two routes for sourcing full-electric drivetrains, according to Palmer, with other external partners also being explored.

Aston has sourced an 800V system for its first electric car, the limited-run RapidE due in 2019, and Palmer said 800V and access to the latest chemistry is key to any future EV powertrain from the firm. Although hybrid versions of the DBX are a long way off, the car will be launched with a Mercedes-sourced 4.0-litre V8 and Aston’s own 5.2-litre V12 as core engine options.

Palmer said that although he lists the DBX’s rivals as the Bentayga, Urus, Cullinan and upcoming Ferrari, each model performs a very different role in the super-luxury SUV segment. “Those minded towards a beauty of execution will move to Aston,” he said.

First-time Aston customers are expected to be found in China and North America in particular for the DBX, but Palmer said plenty of existing Aston owners will be interested, too. “It’s fascinating to me that 72% of Aston customers also own an SUV, and normally these are Cayennes or Range Rovers,” he said. “If you’re converted to Aston, it’ll be easier to convert buyers to an Aston SUV.”

The final model name of the DBX has yet to be decided upon. However, earlier this year Aston trademarked the name Varekai. The seventh model in its product plan, a mid-engined supercar to rival the Ferrari 488, will be called the Vanquish.

The DBX is expected to sell at around 5000 units per year, which would comfortably make it Aston’s most popular model. Last year, the firm sold 5117 sports cars, with the long-term goal of up to 14,000 split between 7000 each from Gaydon and St Athan, and the rest from up to two special, limited-run models each year.

Aston Martin ‘Varekai’ SUV To Use AMG V8

Aston Martin‘s SUV currently known as Varekai or DBX is set to debut in 2019 and will use an AMG engine but previous reports mentioned the inline-six would be the unit of choice.

Now, according to Aston Martin Lagonda’s share prospectus, there is reference to a AMG V8 which would be the 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8 from Mercedes-AMG. This engine is also found in the brand’s current sports cars such as the Vantage as well as the ‘entry-level’ DB11 producing 503 hp (375 kW). With the British marque’s agreement with Ford regarding deliveries of V12 engines expiring in 2021, it is unknown whether the ‘Varekai’ will adopt the twelve-cylinder powerplant at a later stage in its life.

The British SUV will launch next year with high prospect as well. Aston Martin is looking to sell 3,850 units a year, driving the company sales to over 10,000 a year by 2021. This is no doubt quite an ambitious target considering it is double what the company achieved in 2017, but there are also plans in place to pull it off. Aston Martin’s strategies to achieve lofty sales targets include expanding its dealer network. The British-based marque is looking to sell from 200 dealerships rather than the current 160.

With Aston Martin positive that their SUV will expand its customer base appealing to women as well, the company will kick off production at its new plant in Wales, UK in 2020 to take on the likes of Bentley’s Bentayga, the Lamborghini Urus and Ferrari’s forthcoming SUV called the Purosangue.

New Aston Martin DBX: early look at the brand’s first SUV

Aston Martin has finally confirmed that its first SUV will be called the DBX, while also giving us our first look at a (camouflaged) development prototype. The DBX is scheduled to be unveiled in the final quarter of 2019 and will be built at the firm’s new St Athan facility in Wales.

The first “real-world” test for the DBX? Being put through its paces along a Welsh Rally stage, with the company’s chief engineer Matt Becker behind the wheel.

The Gaydon-based automaker says its new SUV will now start a “punishing [testing] regime” that will include “some of the world’s harshest environments”, from the Arctic and the Middle East to Alpine passes and the Nürburgring Nordschleife.

Aston Martin promises the new model will deliver “impressive multi-terrain and towing capabilities”.

“We have already developed and tuned DBX in the driving simulator, which has enabled us to make excellent progress in advance of the first physical prototype cars being available,” said Becker after his drive.

“Still, it’s always a big day when you get to put the first actual miles on an early prototype and I’m delighted with the near perfect correlation between the simulator and this prototype.

“As an engineer, it’s genuinely exciting to get a feel for the car you’re working to create. DBX is a very different kind of Aston Martin, but we will be testing it in all conditions and across all terrains to ensure it delivers a driving experience worthy of the wings badge,” Becker said.

Aston Martin chief Andy Palmer added that the testing of the prototype was “a momentous chapter in the story of our first SUV”.

“DBX is so much more than just an SUV; it will be the first model built at our brand new facility in St Athan. As such, it is very much the start of a bold new era in the company’s long history,” said Palmer.

Aston Martin DBX shown in near-production form before 2019 launch

Official images show disguised prototype of SUV with near-production bodywork, and Aston has confirmed DBX name

Aston Martin has confirmed that its first-ever SUV model will be called DBX and launch before the end of next year. The brand has also released official 'spy' images showing the car's near-production bodywork.

The DBX was first previewed as a concept car in 2015 but had been tipped to take another name for production, with Varekai one of the rumoured possibilities. Unlike the concept, the production DBX will feature a more conventional five-door layout rather than the sleeker three-door design that was originally expected.

The DBX is arguably the most important model in Aston Martin’s history and the next phase of the company’s turnaround plan under boss Andy Palmer. While every Aston produced under Palmer to date as part of his ‘Second Century’ plan has been a replacement for an existing model (DB11, Vantage and DBS Superleggera), the DBX breaks new ground by having no direct predecessor.

As well as being the first Aston SUV, it is also the first Aston to be produced in a new purpose-built factory in St Athan, Wales. During its life cycle, it will introduce hybrid technology to Aston, and it will also play a key role in trying to attract female buyers to the Aston Martin brand.

The DBX is built on an Aston Martin architecture that will be closely related to that set to be used by the Lagonda saloon and SUV that Aston also has in the pipeline and which will be built alongside the DBX in Wales from 2021.

Whereas the Lagonda models will be electrically driven, however, the DBX will start life with petrol power, before getting Mercedes-sourced hybrid technology early in the next decade. Aston Martin’s own V12 and Mercedes-AMG’s V8 engines will both find their way into the DBX, with Mercedes also donating the car’s electrical architecture.

The DBX will compete against the likes of the Lamborghini Urus, Bentley Bentayga, Rolls-Royce Cullinan and upcoming Ferrari SUV. Given the broad appeal and rise in popularity of SUVs, the DBX is expected to quickly become Aston’s bestselling model.

New official shots show DBX's design for first time

Aston has released images of the DBX undergoing testing on the gravel stages of the Wales Rally GB, for the first time giving hints of the final production car’s design. There’s little left of the DBX concept in the camouflaged test mule, although the sleek silhouette does remain, albeit with an extra pair of doors

Sharp body creases and a pronounced shoulder line help reduce the overall visual bulk on what is the most high-sided Aston yet produced, while a new integrated grille design performs a similar role at the front of the car. Aston Martin is already talking up the DBX’s all-terrain capabilities, which are revealed in these official testing images with the company’s chief engineer Matt Becker at the wheel.

The DBX is the first Aston Martin to go through a new dedicated test programme, to ensure it can produce the kind of dynamic on-road performance on which Aston has always made its name, allied to some credibility off-road. Testing is also due to take place in the Arctic, the deserts of the Middle East, on German autobahns and at the Nürburgring, as well as both on and off-road in the UK.

Itwill also be the first all-new Aston Martin model launched after the company’s stock market flotation, a formal intention for which was finally confirmed in late August after the firm returned to profitability last year.

Nobody is buying sports cars, and even sedan sales are plummeting. Which is why every manufacturer from Maserati and Lamborghini to Rolls Royce and Bentley are coming up with these abominations. Porsche was way ahead of the curve, which is impressive.

I was just going to type that it's only a matter of time before there is a Ferrari SUV but I thought to Google it first and surprise, surprise: Ferrari's SUV will be called Purosangue

I'm hoping the back is made to look purposefully bad in this early prototype.

AM vehicles are renowned for classy yet elegant design. The SUV should carry those traits as well.

I 100% agree...

But if those are the general lines they're going with for the SUV, they will struggle to make it look classy and elegant. It just looks like it has a fat arse...

Aston Martin gives us a closer look at its upcoming SUV

Porsche did it, and thrived as a result. Lamborghini took the sacrilegious plunge too, and the world didn’t stop turning. Ferrari is set to do the same, although we can’t say with certainty that Rome won’t order a halt to the earth’s rotational forces.

And as you’d expect, Aston Martin is getting in on the SUV action too. While that fact has been known for some time, the Gaydon-based sports car manufacturer has now released pictures of a prototype undergoing testing, giving us a better idea of how it will look.

Aston has also confirmed that the crossover will be called DBX, as per the concept car, although as you can see the production version is a more conventional five-door.

It’s still going to be a while before we get to see the DBX in all its glory, however, with the full reveal only scheduled for late 2019.

Technical details are thus under wraps too, but Autocar reports that the DBX will be powered by Mercedes-AMG’s 4-litre twin-turbo V8 as well as Aston’s own 5.2-litre V12. A hybrid version is also due at a later stage, the British publication reports.

For now, the first development prototype that you see in the pics is being put through a rigorous testing regime, starting with the Welsh Rally stage that you see in the pics, and eventually moving on to a wide range of off-road conditions from frozen Arctic to scorching Middle Eastern deserts, as well as the necessary on-road dynamic proving grounds such as the Nürburgring.

The DBX will be the first product to be built at the company’s new St Athan facility, which will ultimately become Aston’s ‘Home of Electrification’.

New Aston Martin DBX: prototypes seen using V8 engine

Aston's first SUV, due later in 2019, is caught using AMG-developed 4.0-litre V8, with V12 and hybrid versions also on the cards

Aston Martin is testing prototypes of the long-awaited DBX fitted with the brand's AMG-sourced twin-turbocharged 4.0-litre V8.

Expected to be the first engine offered in Aston's first SUV when it arrives before the end of the year, the car's number plate reveals the cubic capacity of the motor fitted to it. Expect a similar power output to the 503bhp the V8 produces in the DB11 for the DBX.

The new spy images show the same five-door body shape as the official 'spyshots' released by Aston Martin last year. The model is expected to retain this profile for production, while Aston also previously confirmed the DBX name.

The DBX was first previewed as a concept car in 2015 but had been tipped to take another name for production, with Varekai one of the rumoured possibilities. Unlike the concept, the production DBX will feature a more conventional five-door layout rather than the sleeker three-door design that was originally expected.

New Aston Martin DBX seen winter testing ahead of 2020 production

Prototypes of Gaydon's first SUV assessed in extreme weather conditions at Pirelli centre in Sweden

Following the unveiling of three landmark concept cars at the Geneva motor show, Aston Martin has released new images and a video of its upcoming DBX SUV undergoing extreme weather testing in Sweden.

Testing is taking place at tyre manufacturer Pirelli's Flurheden proving ground as part of the two brands' ongoing partnership.

Aston Martin chief engineer Matt Becker said: "Testing these prototypes in cold climate conditions helps us to assess the car’s early dynamics and, crucially, ensure confidence-inspiring sure-footedness on low-grip surfaces.

"This car propels Aston Martin into a new segment and our engineering team are enjoying the challenges of developing a quality luxury SUV experience through this robust testing schedule. Progress is on track and I am confident that we will deliver over and above what our customers would expect from an Aston Martin SUV."

The DBX is the first Aston Martin to go through a new dedicated test programme, to ensure it can produce the kind of dynamic on-road performance on which Aston has always made its name, allied to some credibility off road. Testing is also due to take place in the deserts of the Middle East, on German autobahns and at the Nürburgring.

The DBX was recently seen on UK roads testing the brand's AMG-sourced twin-turbocharged 4.0-litre V8, which is expected to be the first engine offered in the SUV when it arrives before the end of the year. Expect a similar power output to the DB11's 503bhp.

The new images from Sweden show the same five-door body shape as the official 'spy shots' released by Aston Martin last year. The model is expected to retain this profile for production.
