Aston Martin’s new plant opens with pre-production DBX units

Aston Martin has announced that its second manufacturing plant has opened, with the first vehicles to roll off the assembly line in Wales taking the form of the latest pre-production examples of the upcoming DBX.

The St Athan facility will be the sole production site for the new Aston Martin DBX, which will be the British firm’s first SUV when it is unveiled towards the end of 2019.

The plant will also be the automaker’s “home of electrification” and the manufacturing home of the Lagonda brand.

Aston says its 90-acre site has so far resulted in 200 new jobs and is “expected to create up to 550 more”. It adds that as a direct result of the investment a further 3 000 jobs will “likely be created across the supply chain and local businesses”.

The new 90-acre factory in Wales, built on a former Ministry of Defence site, has been under development since 2016, and will be the sole production facility for the DBX. The electric models of the revived Lagonda brand will also be built there.

Ahead of the machine’s official launch later this year, Aston Martin has also issued new images of the DBX sporting a new camouflage livery reflecting its new Welsh home. The machine is currently undergoing final testing using the pre-production versions, with full production due to commence early next year.

Aston Martin exec takes swipe at rivals for ‘hand-me-down’ platforms

Aston Martin’s chief creative officer has taken a swipe at rival automakers that employ “hand-me-down” platforms for their sporty SUVs, with the firm’s chief engineer adding they are working to make the upcoming DBX “dynamically better than a [Porsche] Cayenne”.

Marek Reichman made the initial comments while speaking to motoring.com.au about the new DBX, which will be the British firm’s first SUV when it is revealed towards the end of 2019.

“DBX is a real Aston because it uses all the same principles to design the car, but just has a different user packager,” Reichman told the Australian publication.

“What’s the start word? It’s ‘sports’. We make sports cars. We can do it because it’s our platform. I’m not constrained by having a grandfather or hand-me-down platform,” he said, seemingly referring to rival vehicles from the Volkswagen Group, including the Bentley Bentayga, Lamborghini Urus and Porsche Cayenne.

A high-ranking executive at Aston Martin has suggested that the company’s first-ever SUV, the DBX, could be equipped with a “drift mode”.

Speaking to CarAdvice, senior manager of vehicle dynamics at Aston Martin, Ian Hartley, hinted that the Woking-based firm is considering a drift mode-like function for the DBX to give it a “competitive edge” over its rivals.

"It's a 'never-say-never' thing... Who wouldn't want to see a drift mode? I am all for drift mode,” Hartley told the Australian publication.

Aston Martin's upcoming SUV teased ahead of December debut

Aston Martin is the next sports car producer that’s poised to take the sacrilegious leap into the SUV world.

The British carmaker has already released numerous pictures of disguised prototypes undergoing testing in around the world, and now Aston Martin has announced that it will be revealed in full this December.

The company has also posted a new teaser video, as you’ll see below, which focuses on the new model’s grille, which - as you’d expect - follows the Aston Martin script to a tee.

There is no official word yet on what will power the DBX, but it is widely reported that the first versions will join the Vantage sports car in using a Mercedes-AMG sourced 4-litre twin-turbo V8, while hybridised versions are expected to join the line-up at a later stage.

That makes sense, given that the DBX will be the first product to be built at the company’s new St Athan factory, which will ultimately become Aston’s ‘Home of Electrification’.

Following December’s reveal, full scale production of the Aston Martin DBX is set to kick off in 2020.

Vantage and DB11’s twin-turbo 4.0 engine is cranked up for new DBX

Aston Martin has finally confirmed the launch powertrain of its DBX crossover ahead of a full unveiling in December.

The Bentley Bentayga rival will be powered by a 4.0-litre twin-turbocharged V8, the same Mercedes-AMG-sourced unit found in the DB11 supercar and Vantage sports car. However, for the DBX, power has been boosted beyond the 503bhp of both of those cars to 542bhp. The highest-performing Aston V8 also makes 516lb ft of torque in the DBX, 19lb ft more than usual.

Aston has yet to reveal the car’s performance stats but claims testing has already proven that it can “repeatedly exceed 180mph”. Said to have undergone the most comprehensive test regime of any Aston Martin to date, the DBX is also claimed to have “regularly achieved” sub-eight-minute lap times of the Nürburgring Nordschleife, as well as cornering speeds on a par with the Vantage and, amazingly, braking figures greater than the DBS Superleggera flagship.

Aston Martin DBX: Bond’s SUV is almost ready

Aston Martin is nearly there. After years of teasing, and endless picture campaigns hinting at its readiness, the new DBX high-performance luxury SUV will be unveiled in production form in December.

Last week the manufacturer confirmed it had entered the closing stages of the most comprehensive test regime of any Aston Martin ever built.

With extensive everyday real-world driving and high-performance track evaluation taking place at locations worldwide - including the brand’s two key engineering centres at Silverstone, UK and the Nürburgring, Germany - Chief Engineer Matt Becker’s team are said to have focused their development work to ensure the broad dynamic capability required of DBX.

Becker said that while conducting durability testing at the Nürburgring race circuit, DBX delivered cornering speeds on par with the brand’s most focused sports car, the Vantage, while achieving braking figures greater than the marque’s Super GT, the DBS Superleggera. “This brutal combination of performance for an SUV has already seen us regularly achieve sub 8-minute Nordschleife lap times,” he added.

DBX will feature a 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8, tuned to deliver the exhilaration of a modern GT, they say.

Aston's first SUV is caught by Spanish photographers with no disguise, with official reveal not due until December

The reveal of Aston Martin's new DBX SUV appears to have been spoiled, with pictures of an undisguised car surfacing online several weeks ahead of the official unveiling.

The car, which is Aston's first high-riding model, was papped during what looks like a promotional shoot by Spanish site Autopista. As expected, the design has significantly moved on from the concept, with a front-end inspired by the DB11 and details such as a tail-lights that curve up and across the tailgate.

Although the car in these images appears to be pink, the DBX in these photos is most likely red, and the effect is simply due to low quality photography.

Earlier this week Aston revealed the first shots of the DBX's interior, although they didn't reveal too much.
