Second model to emerge from Aston and Red Bull's engineering partnership will bridge the gap between Valkyrie and Vanquish./

Aston Martin AM-RB 003 Concept

Continuing its march into the manufacture of mid-engined hypercars, Aston Martin presented the design concept for AM-RB 003 at the 2019 Geneva Motor Show.

The British marque can also confirm that AM-RB 003 - previously known as Project 003 - will benefit from the close involvement of Red Bull Advanced Technologies in its design and engineering, continuing one of the brightest and most exciting engineering partnerships in the automotive world.

As its codename suggests, the AM-RB 003 follows the Aston Martin Valkyrie and Valkyrie AMR Pro as the third hypercar in Aston Martin's mid-engined story. Both evolutionary and revolutionary, AM-RB 003 will incorporate concepts and technologies taken directly from F1TM and applied to the epoch-making Aston Martin Valkyrie, providing it with performance to meet and surpass the performance demands of existing top-end hypercar rivals.

Though making greater concessions to practicality and road use, AM-RB 003 will remain true to that uncompromising engineering ethos, extending the trickle down of genuine state-of-the-art F1 TM technology into a car built in larger numbers - but still strictly limited to 500 coupes worldwide - and making a design statement that's second to none.

According to Miles Nurnberger, Aston Martin Director of Design, while AM-RB 003 is heavily influenced by Aston Martin Valkyrie, it is very much its own car: "We were quite deliberate in AM-RB 003 to not disguise its lineage, but we were equally emphatic that it would be a distillation of Aston Martin Valkyrie and not a dilution. The design isn't as extreme in some areas, but it pushes just as hard in others, and is even taking certain ideas and concepts a step further. That's a natural function of design evolution, but also testament to just how great an influence working with Red Bull Advanced Technologies on Aston Martin Valkyrie has had on our approach to everything that's come since."

Sharing the same fundamental styling and aerodynamic philosophy with Aston Martin Valkyrie, the AM-RB 003 features a pronounced front keel and large rear diffuser, with the underfloor generating the bulk of the downforce. However, AM-RB 003 will also benefit from next-generation aircraft morphing technology, to create a variable airfoil across the entirety of the rear wing.

The technology named FlexFoilTM - developed by FlexSys Inc. - has been validated by NASA through extensive performance and acoustic flight testing, with Aston Martin the first to implement this cutting-edge aerospace technology in the automotive industry.

The system allows for the car's downforce to be changed without changing the physical angle of the entire element, resulting in a seamless design with high performance, improved efficiency and reduced wind noise. Turbulence and the associated drag increase found in current "state of the art" active wing designs is virtually eliminated too.

The production design will allow for even larger leading and trailing edge deflections than shown in today's concept and will incorporate greatly increased actuation rates to allow a real-time response to changes in the vehicle's dynamic state.

Across the top surfaces, other aerodynamic demands create a similar shape to Aston Martin Valkyrie, but new lamp shapes at the front and rear ensure it has its own identity. The lamp graphics are unique, but the internals are taken directly from Aston Martin Valkyrie due to their lightness, with the combined weight of all four units totalling less than the weight of one DB11 headlamp.

One of the biggest differences between Aston Martin Valkyrie and AM-RB 003 is the size of the cockpit, for it was part of the latter's design brief that it should make greater concessions to usability and comfort. To this end, the AM-RB 003 has LMP1-style doors, which open forwards taking a section of roof with them to facilitate easier ingress and egress. To create more space between driver and passenger the centre console has been widened, while luggage space is provided via a terrace behind the seats. There will also be stowage areas for oddments such as a wallet or mobile phone.

Aston Martin launches new AM-RB 003 hypercar

Second model to emerge from Aston and Red Bull's engineering partnership will bridge the gap between Valkyrie and Vanquish

The Aston Martin AM-RB 003 is the firm’s incredible new hypercar with McLaren P1-aping performance levels. It has been revealed at the Geneva motor show alongside the Vanuqish Vision supercar and Lagonda All-Terrain SUV concepts.

“If Valkyrie is the best of the best, then the 003 is the best at £1m,” design boss Marek Reichman said of the AM-RB 003, which Aston will put into production in late 2021.

The new model, which Autocar received exclusive access to ahead of the Geneva motor show, is the second to be co-developed between Aston Martin and Red Bull Advanced Technologies in Milton Keynes, and will bridge the sizeable gap in Aston’s fast-growing range of mid-engined models between the Valkyrie and the production Vanquish.

AM-RB 003’s performance and positioning – likely more than 1000bhp and the kind of performance that would threaten the Nürburgring lap record – would place it alongside next-generation versions of the likes of the McLaren P1, LaFerrari and Porsche 918 Spyder, should this trio, which launched in 2013, have been replaced by the time it launches.

The model will use Aston’s new twin-turbo V6 engine mated to a hybrid system, and the car will be built around a carbonfibre architecture and using carbonfibre bodywork. “It will have the same principles as the Valkyrie with its all-carbonfibre tub but will be more usable,” said Reichman.

The Geneva concept car is 90% representative of the final production model, according to Aston’s design chief.

Aston boss Andy Palmer calls it “the bridge” in the world of mid-engined Aston Martins. “The aerodynamics and tub construction filter down from the Valkyrie to this, and then the new V6 powertrain will go down to the Vanquish,” he said. “The Valkyrie is the fastest production car ever and now we’ve created a son of it that’s a halo car above everyone else’s range, like the P1, LaFerrari, and [McLaren] Senna.”

There is further technology transfer from the Valkyrie to the AM-RB 003 through the active suspension and electronic systems, with Aston claiming the dynamic brief for the car is to be class-leading on both road and track.

Those aerodynamics will not be as extreme as on the Valkyrie, but will in turn be more extreme than on the Vanquish. A big bulk of the aerodynamic work is done under the floor and through the large rear diffuser. The AM-RB 003 also adopts aerospace aerodynamic morphing technology with a new variable airfoil called FlexFoil, which alters downforce without changing the physical angle as with an active rear wing, designed to improve aero performance and reduce wind noise, while also virtually eliminating turbulence and drag.

While the AM-RB 003 adopts a look and ethos inspired by the Valkyrie, it does so while being more usable. The doors open out forwards and out of the roof, inspired by an LMP1 car, to improve ingress and egress. Unlike the Valkyrie, there is also luggage and storage space for oddments and a wider centre console to put more space between driver and passenger.

The cabin is unashamedly built around the driver and creating the perfect alignment between driver seat, steering wheel and pedals in what Aston calls ‘Apex Ergonomics’, with all major controls aligned for the driver and their eyeline. Instead of a traditional instrument binnacle, there is a small screen mounted directly on the steering column, with infotainment provided by what Aston calls ‘bring your own’, by simply mirroring a smartphone.

Aston has not quoted any key stats for the AM-RB 003 beyond the engine configuration but, as with the Valkyrie and Vanquish, there has been an obsession with weight saving and optimised packaging. For example, all four headlights and tail-lights weigh less than one DB11 headlight, while 3D printing is used for parts big and small in the interior, including a centre console that weighs half of what it would using traditional construction methods.

Development of the AM-RB 003 will now continue in Milton Keynes, where Aston has a team of 130 people based within the Red Bull Advanced Technologies campus. The site is the home of development for Aston’s mid-engined models.

Palmer has previously said that the AM-RB 003 could form the basis for an assault on outright victory at Le Mans after a regulation changed to make future racing cars more aligned to hypercar road cars than the LMP1 prototypes at present.

Aston Martin reveals the name of its new (sub-Valkyrie) hypercar

Aston Martin has announced it will call its latest mid-engined hypercar the “Valhalla”, continuing its long-standing “V” naming tradition and slotting the newcomer in below the Valkyrie.

Formerly known internally as the AM-RB 003, the hypercar is a collaboration with Red Bull Advanced Technologies and Adrian Newey. Just 500 coupé examples will be built.

So, where does the badge come from? Well, the Gaydon-based firm says it was named after the “warrior’s paradise celebrated in ancient Norse mythology”.

Using lightweight construction methods and “radical aerodynamics pioneered in the Valkyrie”, Aston says the new Valhalla will be powered by a combination of a “high-output” turbocharged V6 petrol engine and a battery-electric hybrid system.

Aston Martin RB-003 Confirmed To Get Valhalla Name

The Aston Martin AM-RB 003 debuted at the Geneva Motor Show this year but was not sure what it will be called until now. It will be named the Valhalla, as a continuation of the firm’s line of ‘V-cars’ performance models.

Aston Martin’s association with the letter V can be traced back to 1951, when the Vantage moniker was unofficially assigned to high-performance variants of the DB2 sports car. The tradition has been kept alive with subsequent Vantage, Virage, Vanquish and of course the mighty Valkyrie hypercar.

Aston Martin's new mid-engined hypercar named Valhalla

Second model to emerge from Aston and Red Bull's partnership will bridge the gap between Valkyrie and Vanquish

Aston Martin’s upcoming mid-engined hypercar will be named the Valhalla, as a continuation of the firm’s line of ‘V-cars’ performance models.

Revealed at this year’s Geneva motor show under internal codename RB-003, alongside the Vanquish Vision supercar and Lagonda All-Terrain SUV concepts, the hybridised V6-powered road car takes its production name from the warriors' paradise referred to in Norse mythology.

Valhalla - Aston Martin gives a name to new mid-engined hypercar

Aston Martin has given a name to its upcoming mid-engined hypercar that was until now only known by its codename AM-RB 003.

In case you were wondering, the Valhalla is named after the warrior’s paradise celebrated in ancient Norse mythology.

As the aforementioned codename implies, the car will be developed in conjuction with Red Bull Advanced Technologies, as well as Adrian Newey, and it has been described as something of a ‘mini Valkyrie’ with more of a bias towards everyday road use and a bit of space for luggage.

Dare we suggest it will have more ‘mainstream appeal’, then, and that also applies to availability. While Aston Martin will only be building 150 Valkyries, the company has committed to producing 500 Valhallas.

The British sportscar maker is remaining mum on the power figures, but we do know that its drivertrain mates a “high-output” V6 petrol engine to a battery-electric hybrid system. Many sources abroad are speculating that the system will produce over 1000 horsepower, or 745kW in metric speak.

James Bond Will Drive the New Aston Martin Valhalla in Bond 25: Report

James Bond will reportedly ride eternal, shiny and chrome into the gates of Valhalla in Bond 25 in the new Aston Martin AM-RB 003—which has been officially renamed the Aston Martin Valhalla after the Viking legend of a warrior’s paradise.

Aston Martin announced the name of the Valhalla today, its new middle-supercar slotted under the Valkyrie hypercar and above the upcoming mid-engine Vanquish.

The Valhalla will draw a lot from its hyper Valkyrie sibling, including a similar carbon fiber structure and body, but with a more spacious and daily-drivable cockpit. It doesn’t get the V12, but rather a newly-developed in-house hybrid turbo V6 engine.

The Valhalla joins a legacy of Aston models with names starting with the letter “V,” which also includes V8, Vantage, Virage, Vanquish, Vulcan, Valkyrie and the Volante designation for convertible models.

Aston Martin Valhalla

Named after the warrior's paradise celebrated in ancient Norse mythology, Valhalla follows Valkyrie on Aston Martin's journey into the highest echelons of road car performance. Employing lightweight construction methods and radical aerodynamics pioneered in Valkyrie, Aston Martin Valhalla will be propelled by a combination of high-efficiency, high-output turbocharged V6 petrol engine and battery-electric hybrid system. Just 500 Coupe examples of the all-carbon fibre hypercar will be built.

In continuing the fine tradition of Aston Martin 'V' cars, Valhalla can trace its lineage back to 1951, when the Vantage designation was given to high performance variants of the then current model, the DB2. Though actual Vantage badging was never applied, the name stuck.

The first time the Vantage name appeared was on the flanks of the DB5. Still it remained a name reserved for the most potent model derivatives until 2005, when the Vantage became a model line in its own right. Fourteen years later that acclaimed family of V8 and V12-powered models is remembered as the most successful in Aston Martin's history. Since then the all-new generation of turbocharged Vantage has fast forged a reputation as the most dynamically focussed series production Aston Martin ever.

New Turbo 3.0-Litre V6 Hybrid To Be Most Powerful In Aston Martin Range

Aston Martin has been very busy with an in-house developed V6 engine which has been built initially for deployment in a new range of mid-engined sportscars, starting with the Aston Martin Valhalla from 2022.

The engine has been codenamed TM01 to celebrate one of the brands top engineers during the 50s and 60s, Tadek Marek. The unit has undergone extensive testing on the dyno (see attached photos) and will become the first in-house designed engine since 1968.

The 3.0-litre turbocharged V6 will be electrified and when finished, the complete system will be the most powerful in the Aston Martin range. The power output and torque will vary depending on the product it serves but for the Valhalla, the rumoured is 986 hp (735 kW).

The development of the Valkyrie directed Aston Martin to develop the engine with a ‘hot V’ structure which makes it compact and rather light (less than 200kg).

Aston Martin Valhalla May Use Mercedes Powertrain Says Report

Aston Martin is going through some significant changes at the moment which hinges around the appointment of old Mercedes-AMG CEO Tobias Moers now the CEO of the manufacturer in Gaydon.

The success but more importantly future of the brand depends on how sales go with the new DBX SUV. A new report by Automotive News Europe suggests that Moers wants to steer the company in the right direction through the use of electrification. In fact, the company intends for every fourth or fifth vehicle sold in 2024 to be electrified.
