Aston Martin plots Mercedes powertrain for revised Valhalla

New version of Valhalla to be shown in coming months; DBX PHEV could use 700bhp AMG set-up

Aston Martin is "not in a rush" to decide which components it will take from stakeholder Mercedes-Benz, but will heavily revise its Valhalla supercar concept with a powertrain from the German firm.

As part of a new technical partnership between the two brands, stemming from Mercedes' 20% stake in the British firm, Aston has access to a range of combustion, hybrid and electric powertrains for use in its own vehicles.

Speaking to investors following the reveal of Aston's 2020 financial results, Moers said a final decision has not been taken on which of the German company's platforms and drive units it will use. He did, however, add that "everything is a reasonable cost situation", suggesting nothing is off limits.

The Valhalla mid-engined supercar remains on the cards for a launch in the second half of 2023, but Moers said the company is "re-assessing" the model, and it will now "probably have a different drivetrain" to the concept.

The Mercedes partnership presents new options for the Ferrari SF90 rival, so it will now likely go without its Aston-developed hybrid V6. A new version of the concept will be shown to buyers within the next four months.

Aston Martin will hit the ground running with its transition to electrification later this year when it unveils the production-ready Valhalla supercar, which will serve as a halo model for a new range of hybrid versions of the firm’s current models, as well as all-new fully electric cars.

The Valhalla is due to enter production in 2023. Revealed in concept form at the 2019 Geneva motor show, it was set to be the first model to use Aston’s bespoke ‘TM01’ hybridised 3.0-litre V6, before the set-up was to be rolled out across the line-up. However, development of that powertrain has now been put on ice in light of Aston’s strengthened ties to 20% stakeholder Mercedes-Benz, which will supply components at a “reasonable cost” to the British brand.

The mid-engined two-seater is now being substantially revised ahead of its 2023 launch date and will be shown again in its new form in the coming months. Aston has not revealed how many orders it has taken, but it has confirmed that “a chunk” of its deposit balance at the end of 2020 came from Valhalla customers.

The new supercar will still be a hybrid, but with CEO Tobias Moers keen to leverage the accessibility of components and drivetrains supplied by partner firm Mercedes-Benz, the V6 is now set to make way for an AMG power unit.

Aston Martin will effectively be starting the development of the Valhalla hypercar from scratch after a last-minute switch to AMG’s latest V8 plug-in hybrid powertrain.

According to Aston Martin CEO Tobias Moers, Valhalla is still on track to launch in the second half of 2023, even though the development program had to be “redefined” after he joined the British car-maker from Mercedes-AMG 12 months ago.

Moers said the development of the electrified twin-turbo 3.0-litre V6 was nowhere nearly complete so he cancelled the bespoke Aston Martin powertrain for an off-the-shelf alternative.

“There’s no V6 anymore. What I found in the company is not a mature engine. It was a concept engine and if everyone is investing in electric drive you should not be investing in an ICE (internal combustion engine),” Moers said in a recent roundtable interview.

Aston Martin's shock new Valhalla supercar is a radical, mid-engined Ferrari SF90 Stradale rival with a hybridised V8, concept car looks and a chassis set-up inspired by Formula 1 cars.

As the Gaydon company's first plug-in hybrid model, the Valhalla "heralds a new definition of Aston Martin", according to the firm. It is also the first all-new model launched under the guidance of new CEO Tobias Moers and forms an integral part of his bold 'Project Horizon' transformation plan for the brand. Under the plan, Aston will launch "more than 10 cars" by 2024, including the Valhalla, the closely related but less potent Vanquish supercar and the ultra-exclusive V12-engined Valkyrie hypercar.

One of the biggest influences in the Valhalla’s two-year transformation from the RB-003 Geneva concept to production has been Aston’s new factory-backed F1 team, learnings from which are said to have informed almost every aspect of the car. Fittingly, it has been shown for the first time at the team’s Silverstone headquarters just ahead of the British Grand Prix, in which Aston is competing for the first time in 61 years.

Notably, the Valhalla – unlike the 2019 concept – is not powered by a bespoke, Aston Martin-developed V6 as was originally planned. Development of that 3.0-litre motor, which was set to exceed the 715bhp output of even the DBS Superleggera's V12, was axed soon after Moers took over because, he said, it would not have been Euro 7 compliant and "would have taken another huge investment that was really too big to bring to life".

Instead, the Valhalla follows Aston's Vantage and DB11 coupés in adopting a powertrain supplied by technical partner Mercedes-Benz; more specifically, the AMG performance division's twin-turbocharged 4.0-litre V8, which in this application produces some 740bhp, revs to 7200rpm and drives the rear axle through an all-new bespoke eight-speed dual-clutch gearbox, which will also be used on other future Aston Martin models.

Aston Martin Valhalla Revealed In Production Form Packing 937 Hp (699 Kw) V8 Hybrid

Aston Martin gave us the ‘first look’ at the Valhalla in March 2019 at the Geneva Motor Show when they revealed the AM-RB 003. Nearly two and a half years later and here is the official production version of the Valhalla.

In March this year, the manufacturer announced that the in-house twin-turbo 3.0-litre V6 would not be happening and they would rather use a rear-mid-mounted twin-turbo 4.0-litre V8. They are calling it a “bespoke V8 engine” but we can only assume it has its roots in Affalterbach (AMG).

This particular V8 features a flat-plane crankshaft, leading us to believe it’s related to the V8 installed in the AMG GT Black Series. This combustion engine works with a pair of electric motors (one for each axle) to deliver a combined output of 937 hp (699 kW) and 1,000 Nm (738 lb-ft) of torque. This punch enables the supercar to sprint to 100 km/h (62 mph) in just two and a half seconds and top out at 330 km/h (217 mph). “The most advanced, responsive and highest-performing V8 engine ever fitted to an Aston Martin” also breathes through a lightweight exhaust system that exits through the top of the rear deck and contains adjustable flaps that give “an authentic Aston Martin sound character”.

The power is sent to the road via an eight-speed, dual-clutch automatic transmission Aston Martin says it was exclusively developed and built for the company, with a focus on hybrid performance machines. It comes along with an electronic limited-slip differential on the rear axle and boasts a fully electric reverse mode by utilizing the two e-motors. Doing so shaves off weight by eliminating the conventional reverse gear.

Aston Martin Valhalla revealed with carbon tub structure and AMG power!

After the name was officially revealed two years ago, the Aston Martin Valhalla has finally been revealed as a sub-Valkyrie hypercar offering. Keeping true to racecar inspired design, the Valhalla makes use of a carbon tub structure and hybrid-electric powertrain.

With ex-AMG head Tobias Moers at the helm of development, the Aston Martin Valhalla has been created to broaden the model portfolio to reflect the brand’s presence in Formula One. With this in mind, it uses chassis, aerodynamic and electronic technology sourced and developed by the sport.

Mounted to the rear-centre of the chassis is Mercedes-AMG’s twin-turbocharged 4,0-litre V8 with a flat-plane crankshaft, as seen in the GT R Black Series, which delivers 552 kW an 7 200 r/min to the rear wheels. This power is delivered via an eight-speed dual-clutch transmission with an e-reverse and e-differential. Adding the hybrid aspect is a pair of electric motors; one mounted to the front and the other at the rear. With this, power is pushed up to 699 kW and 1 000 N.m of torque.

What does this translate to in terms of performance? As per the manufacturer’s claimed figures, the Aston Martin Valhalla will accelerate from 0-100 km/h in 2,5 seconds and reach a top speed of 330 km/h. Stopping power is provided by a brake-by-wire system which feeds readings to a set of high performance carbon ceramic matrix discs mated to 20-inch front and 21-inch rear Michelin performance tyres. With these figures in mind, the brand is targeting a Nürburgring Nordschleife lap time of 6 minutes 30 seconds.

The newly revealed Aston Martin Valhalla represents a seismic shift for its maker. When it enters production in 2023, it will give Gaydon a direct rival to the likes of the Ferrari SF90, with 937bhp from a plug-in hybrid V8 - but the final product has come a long way from the initial concept teased at the 2019 Geneva Motor Show.

We caught up with the man responsible for pushing through many of the changes that transformed the Valhalla from concept to reality, new company CEO Tobias Moers, at the car's unveiling.

You’ve made big changes to new Astons since you arrived less than a year ago. What did you do to Valhalla?

"We’ve kept the spirit of the 2019 concept but changed everything under the skin. The engine is now a V8, and that change has meant we needed to modify the mechanical layout as a result. We chose the AMG V8 — an engine I’m pretty familiar with — because it’s versatile, and a known quantity. We’d rather invest in electrification than an all-new ICE engine."

The new Valhalla supercar is Aston Martin's answer to the Ferrari SF90 Stradale. It pairs a highly strung Mercedes-AMG-supplied V8 with a pair of electric motors for a combined output of 937bhp, which Gaydon bosses reckon will secure it a production-car lap record at the Nürburgring.

It's a car of many firsts for the British manufacturer and as such represents a huge design leap from other models in the brand's portfolio, as well as the previewing RB-003 concept that was presented in 2019.

We spoke to Aston Martin's chief creative officer, Marek Reichman, to hear how he went about creating an all-new and radically different design for the Valhalla yet one that maintains links to the brand's mainstream production cars.

And Lance! Aston’s mid-engined supercar nears, with input from Aston’s F1 team

Aston Martin has revealed new details about its upcoming, mid-engined spaceship – sorry, supercar – called Valhalla. And the pinnacle of information dispensed - the one key detail we didn't know before but isn't that surprising now - is that Fernando Alonso is helping to shape its development.

Naturally his teammate Lance Stroll is in on the development gravy train, too, both F1 aces feeding into what should be a pretty striking bit of machinery. But really, it’s Alonso’s input that we’re interested in. Because imagine the team radio.

Indeed Aston has spoken at great length about just how much its Formula One team has fed into developing the highly anticipated Valhalla, calling the synergy “the world’s fastest laboratory”. One could argue giving a supercar to an in-form double world champion to develop is like ‘throwing it to the lions, mate’.

The F1 team’s ‘consulting arm’, dubbed Aston Martin Performance Technologies, is the bridge betwixt road and race, helping push the Valhalla’s handling, aero and material use. Of the former, Alonso – and Stroll – will help calibrate the supercar’s handling traits. And quite literally shape the car’s interior – we’re told the driving position takes its cues from the AMR23 F1 car.
