Aston Martin Valkyrie To Have The “World’s Most Powerful Naturally Aspirated Road Engine” With 1,130 BHP

Cosworth tweeted a picture of the Aston Martin Valkyrie recently with some tasty information attached to it but either we were not supposed to see it just yet or the claim might not be accurate as the tweet has since been removed.

Luckily for us, a screenshot was taken of the tweet (seen below) where Cosworth are claiming their 6.5-litre V12 in the Valkyrie will be the “World’s Most Powerful Naturally Aspirated Road Engine” with 1,130 bhp (1,145 hp; 842 kW).

An output in this region is not even mind-boggling these days but are they saying their unit can pump out this large figure with no assistance?

It’s unclear whether that output factors in the aid of the Valkyrie’s electric-powered hybrid system, however, or whether the 1,130 bhp figure refers specifically to the output of the 6.5-litre V12 alone.

Either way, the figure is enough to set a new bar for road car engines lacking forced induction.

Even if the V12 will be good for “just” 1,000 horsesr, it’ll still make it the most powerful N/A engine ever fitted to a road car, offering 211 hp more than the V12 engines in the Superfast and the LaFerrari.

Cosworth Confirms The Aston Martin Valkyrie Will Have World’s Most Powerful Naturally-Aspirated Engine

In a tweet shared earlier this year, Cosworth gave away some pretty juicy informationregarding their engine development for the Aston Martin Valkyrie but quickly removed the tweet shortly after.


Obviously for the screenshot kings in the world, this was far too slow and we got ‘confirmation’ that the naturally-aspirated V12 would be the most powerful such engine ever used in a road car.

Cosworth CEO Hal Reisiger said that the Valkyrie’s 6.5-litrr V12 is being developed to put out “two to three hundred more horsepower” over any other V12 setup on the market. The 6.5-litre V12 in the Ferrari LaFerrari produces a maximum of around 950 hp when the car’s hybrid KERS system kicks in so on a conservative end, Reisiger is hinting at a design that will deliver at least 1,100 hp.

Considering the Valkyrie will set you back around $3.3 million it makes sense to pack such an insane piece of engineering.

Hear the new Aston Martin Valkyrie’s 6,5-litre V12 scream

Aston Martin CEO Andy Palmer has taken to social media to share the scream created by the upcoming Valkyrie’s naturally aspirated 6,5-litre V12.

The tweet includes a 20-second clip that gives us our first listen to the mid-mounted, high-revving V12, which the Gaydon-based brand has sourced from the folks over at Cosworth.

Of course, Cosworth has already promised that the Valkyrie’s 12-pot will be the world’s most powerful naturally aspirated engine used in a road car (thus theoretically taking the title from the Ferrari 812 Superfast), even if final figures have yet to be confirmed.

The Valkyrie was initially known as the AM-RB 001, a nod to the fact is was developed by Aston Martin and Red Bull.

Aston Martin Valkyrie’s 6,5-litre V12: vital statistics revealed

Aston Martin has revealed fresh details of the high-revving, naturally aspirated 6,5-litre V12 engine that is set to power the Valkyrie.

According to the Gaydon-based automaker, the Cosworth-developed V12 was created as the “ultimate expression of the internal combustion engine”.

Displacing 6,5 litres, the 65-degree V12 boasts a certified peak power output of 746 kW (that’s a pleasingly round 1000 bhp) at a lofty 10 500 r/min. Peak torque of 740 N.m is on tap at 7 000 r/min, while the engine revs to a maximum of 11 100 r/min.

Of course, the Valkyrie’s performance figures will be further boosted by a battery hybrid system, with Aston Martin set to reveal these details at a later stage.

The firm says that aside from the major castings – block, cylinder heads, sump and structural cam covers – most of the engine’s internal components are machined from solid material. These include Titanium conrods and “F1-spec” pistons. The result is an engine that weighs 206 kg.

“To anyone with a drop of petrol in their blood, a high-revving naturally aspirated V12 is the absolute pinnacle. Nothing sounds better or encapsulates the emotion and excitement of the internal combustion engine more completely,” said Andy Palmer, Aston Martin Lagonda president and group chief executive officer.

“Despite the apparently insurmountable challenges it presented, there was never any question that the Aston Martin Valkyrie would make do with anything less. From the outset the team at Cosworth were unflinching in their commitment to achieving benchmarks which pushed the boundaries of the possible. The result is a quite extraordinary engine. One which I doubt will ever be surpassed.”

Listen up! Aston details (and lets us hear) new 11 000rpm V12

Aston Martin says that its new normally aspirated 6.5-litre V12 engine that will power the Valkyrie hypercar is the “ultimate expression of the internal combustion engine” and it’s hard to argue with that bold assertion.

And now the British sports car specialist has decided to reveal some of its secrets as well as let us in on just how glorious it sounds, through the video that you view below.

What excites us most about the new 65-degree V12 is that it revs all the way to 11 100rpm, with the maximum output of 745.7kW produced at 10 500 revs, while peak torque of 740Nm is produced lower down at 7000. But that’s just the internal combustion side of things - Aston Martin says it will be further boosted by a battery hybrid system, which will be detailed at a later stage.

For high-revving, sonorous delights on the old-school kind, Aston Martin avoided going the turbocharged route:

Developed in conjunction with Cosworth, the V12 is surprisingly light for its size, tipping the scales at just 206kg, and plenty of Formula One know-how went into its engineering as well as material selection.

The majority of its components, apart from major castings such as the block and cylinder heads, are born from an ultra-fine machining process that optimises weight and maximises strength. Examples include the titanium conrods and billet machined crankshaft that, thanks to extensive machining and heat treatment, is 50 percent lighter than the shaft in the Aston Martin One-77’s V12.

Aston Martin Valkyrie: V12 engine makes 1000bhp on dyno

Aston's multi-million pound hypercar uses 6.5-litre V12 mated to an electric motor, and now the engine's output has been revealed

Aston Martin’s Valkyrie hypercar is confirmed to produce 1000hp (986bhp) from the petrol element of its hybrid powertrain. The output figure is produced by a Cosworth-developed 6.5-litre naturally aspirated V12 at a dizzying 10,500rpm.

Autocar visited Cosworth’s base in Northampton during durability testing for the 6.5-litre naturally aspirated V12, touted as the ultimate 12-cylinder motor. We got a chance to see it perform on a dynometer, which was simulating repeated laps of the Silverstone circuit.

Cosworth has designed the engine and will build the 150 that will be fitted to road-going Valkyries, plus an as-yet undisclosed number for the track-only AMR Pro version.

Cosworth’s managing director, Bruce Wood, confirmed the 1000hp target was agreed well before the first prototype was built, and that the V12 is set to serve as a structural component. Like a race car, it will be bolted directly to the Valkyrie's tub and havethe gearbox and rear suspension hung from it - having to transmit the huge loads they will generate. That's why the drive gears for the camshafts are located at the rear; to try and insulate the cabin from some of the noise they make at high revs.

The engine also uses port fuel injection rather than direct injection, which has allowed it to meet emissions standards without the need to use heavy gasoline particulate filters. Fully dressed, Wood says the engine weighs just 204kg, but he is equally proud of the fact it has been designed for a 100,000km lifespan based on no more than routine maintenance.

The engine will be augmented by an electric motor that sits between it and a single-clutch gearbox designed by Ricardo, with a Formula 1-inspired energy recovery system harvesting kinetic energy under braking.

Technical details of the engine were briefly tweeted by Cosworth in August. Although that post was removed shortly afterwards, it was spotted by Road and Track. This power figure puts it well in excess of the 992bhp minimum that Mercedes-AMG claims for the Project One hypercar, as well as the less hardcore McLaren Senna. McLaren's upcoming Speedtail three-seater is likely to be a near match for the Valkyrie's power output, although that car won't chase track performance, but is pitched instead as an 'all-rounder' hypercar.

The Valkyrie will use a Formula 1-inspired energy recovery system (ERS) to harvest kinetic energy from braking, with Croatian electric car maker Rimac supplying lightweight hybrid batteries. Cosworth's tweet suggests that, with this ERS, the car's total power figure could exceed 1130bhp.

Aston Martin Valkyrie’s V12 will need rebuild at 100 000 km

Aston Martin recently revealed fresh details of the high-revving, naturally aspirated 6,5-litre V12 engine that is set to power the upcoming Valkyrie. And now the managing director of Cosworth, the firm that helped the Gaydon-based automaker develop the big engine, says it would need rebuilding (or replacing) at 100 000 km.

Interestingly, that’s double the distance at which the Mercedes-AMG One’s turbocharged 1,6-litre V6 is expected to require a rebuild.

Speaking to Car and Driver, Cosworth boss Bruce Wood said the 65-degree V12 would require only routine maintenance before it hit that figure.

“Our expectation is that at 100 000 km [the engine] would be replaced,” Wood told the US-based publication.

“That’s not to say we think there is going to be a hole through the side of it, but our expectation would be that a lot of the components would be worn out,” he explained.

“The reality is that if anybody got to that point, we’d take the engine out, strip it, and crack-test it. If the block was fine and not excessively worn, there would be no reason not to rebuild it with new pistons and valves,” Wood added.

New Aston Martin Valkyrie gets track-focused bodywork option

Mind-boggling personalisation choices for 1130bhp Aston hypercar include a no-compromise circuit set-up

Aston Martin’s Valkyrie – the £3 million hypercar that has grown out of the Gaydon company’s close links with Formula 1 guru Adrian Newey and Red Bull Advanced Technologies – will be made available with the most extensive selection of ‘Q by Aston Martin’ equipment ever offered, insiders claim.

Aston’s unique personalisation service will include a special set of super-aerodynamic body panels, called the AMR Track Performance pack, which is capable of cutting circuit lap times by around 8%. The pack can be fitted to a standard car by specially trained Aston mechanics “in a couple of days” and brings the car even closer to Newey’s aerodynamic ideal but can’t be road registered.

The AMR pack features a different front clamshell that provides a major increase in downforce, plus replacements for all other exterior panels, a set of ultra-lightweight titanium brakes, an even more track-focused suspension set-up, a set of matt black magnesium wheels and carbonfibre wheel discs to cut drag further.

Aston says the car’s aero package has been designed using CFD (computational fluid dynamics) and no wind tunnel testing, so final values for drag factor, frontal area and downforce have still to be calculated.

Buyers will be able to order their cars in any existing Aston colour, but four unique metallic colours are also being offered, along with three more lightweight paint colours. These add only about 0.7kg to the car’s overall weight, compared with the “3kg or 4kg” extra for a regular paint job.

Interiors can be trimmed in a wide variety of materials and textures, but most buyers so far are likely to take their cars with bare carbon interiors, with judiciously placed pads, mounted directly to the tub, providing support and comfort.

Engine builder Cosworth says the Valkyrie’s ultracompact 6.5-litre normally aspirated V12 engine – which weighs just 204kg ‘fully dressed’ despite doubling as a race-style stress-bearing chassis member – has already yielded more than 1000bhp at 10,500rpm on the dynamometer. Cosworth MD Bruce Wood has also revealed that peak torque of 546lb ft is developed at 7000rpm.

Combined with a braking energy recovery system (sourced from Rimac), the car should have around 1130bhp on tap. Given Newey’s early ‘1:1’ target – one horsepower per kilogram – this suggests the Valkyrie will weigh a little over 1100kg at the kerb. Acceleration figures are yet to be revealed, but in top-performance guise, the car is believed to be capable of around 250mph.

Around 30 Valkyrie buyers have so far visited the company’s Gaydon HQ to lay down their cars’ specifications, to be fitted to their driving seats, and either to choose track pack liveries or to configure a second car for track use. Aston expects to meet the rest of its buyers through 2019 and to deliver the first cars at the end of the year, before the even harder-core Valkyrie AMR Pro appears in 2020.

Aston Martin Valkyrie: hardcore ‘track pack’ option revealed

Aston Martin has announced that its new Valkyrie will be offered with an AMR Track Performance Pack.

The Gaydon-based firm says the optional pack’s track-only components – which can be interchanged with the existing road-legal parts – will deliver “approximately” eight percent quicker lap times than the standard Valkyrie (although the brand qualifies this by saying it is “dependant on track configurations, circuit conditions, tyre degradation and driver ability).

The pack includes a new front clamshell arrangement delivering greater downforce, a second set of all other exterior body panels, lightweight titanium brakes, track-focused suspension and a matte-black magnesium performance wheel and carbon-fibre aero-disc set.

Three AMR livery designs will be offered, while buyers can also specify a customised finish.

Furthermore, the firm says its personalisation service “Q by Aston Martin” will offer all manner of options for the road-legal version, including four “Designer Specification” themes (check out some of the details in the embedded video below). Aston Martin claims this service makes the Valkyrie “one of the world’s most customisable cars”.

As a reminder, just 150 units of the Valkyrie will be produced, each powered by a Cosworth-developed, naturally aspirated 6,5-litre V12 worth 746 kW and 740 N.m (working as part of a battery hybrid system the automaker has yet to detail).

Aston hypercar solves road-track dilemma with interchangeable parts

Thanks to various regulations, you can never make a truly uncompromised track car that’s also road legal, but Aston Martin has found a way around that dilemma for its upcoming Valkyrie hypercar.

Enter the AMR Track Performance Pack, consisting of track-only components that can be interchanged with the road-legal parts that the car comes with, and which can improve lap times by around 8 percent, according to Aston Martin.

The optional package comprises an aerodynamic front clam that improves downforce as well as a second set of exterior body panels, titanium brakes, track-honed suspension components and special wheels and carbon-fibre aero-disks.

The Valkyrie’s lucky customers - there will only ever be 150 of them - will also get to choose between three AMR livery designs or their own unique finish.

A whole array of race suit and pit garage accessories is also available for those wanting to go the whole hog.

Even those not planning to take their hypercar to the track can choose between an almost boundless array of personalisation options through ‘Q by Aston Martin - Commission’. Here, owners are invited to work with the Aston Martin Design team to refine their specification. There’s even a Gold Pack that features 24-carat gold leaf livery laid beneath the paint lacquer.

“This is simply the best car in the world if you want something bespoke and we are really pushing the boundaries to match the dreams of our customers,” said Aston Martin Chief Creative Officer Marek Reichman.

“Every single element of this hypercar, including its performance, can be personalised. The materials are very much about science, the art of creativity and the ability to create a unique solution that doesn’t detract from this exceptional car’s performance capability”.

And that part is rather extreme.

The Valkyrie is powered by a 6.5-litre V12 engine that revs all the way to 11 500rpm.
