ASUS Eee Pad transformer

*sigh* Trying so hard to get a 16GB TF. No-one got stock though. Really wanted to get one today.
Anyone know of a dealer with stock?

Don't think you will find any unless someone brought them in themselves. ASUS next shipment to arrive end of the month.

Ye, noticed the 24th thing. So impatient I ignored it and tried anyway. When I decide I want something I tend to want it yesterday :)

I failed at patience, also ordered some time back, but changed to 32 when they got here.

You can fly one in doing that overnight shipping, Expect to pay about 16K then :)

Not necessarily hey..

My first option was going through expansys, less than 6k for 16gb & dock, delivery is also cheap.

I can only cancel when I get paid, I don't have funds :p

Expansys are good I've ordered stuff from them before, only problem is they import it for you so there might be a wait for it to get to you.

That is definitely the cheapest. It says stock expected in 5 days but then it says if ordered before 12 it will ship in 5 days

Asus confirms 16Gig models are at customs. Should be in JHB warehouse by this afternoon or early tomorrow morning.

yeh, well they do say "ZA customers can expect shipment in 5 working days"

Awesome,

Thanks for phoning Asus, man I'd love to know why the 16GB models got stuck in customs for so long, hopefully I get my toy before the end of the week?

I put my pre-order in with Rebel Tech based on recommendations from some people in this thread.
Hopefully they ship me one the second they have them. I would love to have mine by the weekend (considering today is out the question :) ).

guys this tablet is the bomb even for Android noobs like me (with a little help from Elimentals :P)

So, I've basically decided that I'm going to buy the Transformer. However, I'm going to force myself to be patient and wait for two months for the 3G version to come out, so that I have a tablet which can actually connect to the internet when I'm outside the house.

However, since there are now several Transformer owners on the forums, I was wondering if you guys could you answer a few questions I'm curious about? Bear in mind that I've ever actually seen or used one of these tablets in person before, so I'm planning on buying one pretty much on faith, on the strength of reviews I've read. Still, I'd to find out as much as possible about the intangibles that aren't necessarily captured on the spec sheet. Apologies if some of this stuff has already been discussed on this thread:

1. How smooth is the UI? On demonstration units of Honeycomb tablets that I've used in shops, I've generally found that there's a lot of lag and stuttering when doing things like transitionin from one homescreen to another, or opening the app drawer. However, someone in this thread mentioned this might be because Honeycomb handles live wallpaper badly. Is it reasonably smooth when you have live wallpaper disabled?

2. How well does the multitouch sensor work? If you install an app like MultiTouch Tester from the market, how many points of touch does it recognise, and how accurately does it track them? On my phone (HTC Desire), the multitouch tracking is a complete mess - it regularly mixes up the axes of touch points and makes most multitouch games completely unplayable. By contrast, on the iPad you can have two people playing a game like Glow Hockey, and the device recognises both points of touch so accurately that it almost feels like you have a real air hockey table. Can you do this on the Transformer too?

3. On that note, how is gaming on the Transformer more generally? When the Tegra 2 came out, there was a lot of hype about it can run games that are near console-quality. Have you actually found this to be the case?

4. I'm assuming the Transformer works well as a portable video player. Does it support divx/xvid files natively? Alternatively, I'm guessing can you use applications like Moboplayer on Honeycomb?

5. Can you use WhatsApp over wifi? I'm assuming not, because it requires a phone number and phone book to work.

5. How do you find typing on the on-screen keyboard?

6. I know the back is made out of plastic, but how does it feel? The Galaxy Tab 10.1V feels notably cheap and flimsy, but some plastic devices still manage to have a high-quality feel to them.

7. How do you update the Transformer to latest version of Android? Does it just update itself over Wifi, or do you need to sideload the update from your PC?

8. How does well does it function as an e-reader? Is the widescreen aspect ratio awkward if you hold it in portrait orientation? Is the pixel density high enough to make reading a pleasant experience? Is the weight of the device awkward if you hold it for long periods of time? Can it run applications like Read It Later, Aldiko and Kindle? I'm especially interested in Read It Later, if anyone feels nice enough to check whether it runs on Honeycomb.

Thanks in advance to anyone who feels like offering their thoughts :)

When you turn off Live wallpapers it is a lot smoother, I still get the general stutter once in a while, a bearly notice it compared to when I was on 3.0 with live wallpapers. 3D Games and apps/menu I dont get any stutter at all.

10, yes I tried to use my toes to see if it can do more, seems the limit is 10. Accuracy is the same as iPad. Screen looks the same as well.

I Played Dungeon Defenders, Galaxy on fire and Bang Bang Racing and yes they are at say Wii quality, maybe a bit better that Wii I wont say its PS3 quality but I guess its still early days and developers did not push out big names yet.

4. I'm assuming the Transformer works well as a portable video player. Does it support divx/xvid files natively? Alternatively, I'm guessing can you use applications like Moboplayer on Honeycomb?

I only tried some (about 10) of my movies and all worked fine, did not get one that was not supported yet, I need to do some more tests but tried mkv, divx and xvid so far. Also had a 12 gig Blu-ray rip that I tested 1080p on a TV that had no lag. Windows Media Player on Windows 7 DLNA support worked like a dream as well.

5. Can you use WhatsApp over wifi? I'm assuming not, because it requires a phone number and phone book to work.

No Clue, never used it, not planning to either.

5. How do you find typing on the on-screen keyboard?

Lasted about 1 minute... well was navigating to the market to install Thumb Keyboard PS now on Special 50% off so advise getting it before price goes up again.

6. I know the back is made out of plastic, but how does it feel? The Galaxy Tab 10.1V feels notably cheap and flimsy, but some plastic devices still manage to have a high-quality feel to them.

That is a tough one, I am not very fond of it, would have preferred metal finish, but i guess the scratch-resist and weight arguments will let me live with it.

7. How do you update the Transformer to latest version of Android? Does it just update itself over Wifi, or do you need to sideload the update from your PC?

Normal Android check for updates thats in the settings tab. WiFi and it saw the update itself I was still waiting for charge when it pop'ed up saying there was an update.

8. How does well does it function as an e-reader? Is the widescreen aspect ratio awkward if you hold it in portrait orientation? Is the pixel density high enough to make reading a pleasant experience? Is the weight of the device awkward if you hold it for long periods of time? For what I read (comics) the portrait aspect is a dream come true, note I have a iPad as well and find reading comics on it a pain as I have to scroll vs Eee Pad that gives me proper clear pages, I can not read books so can not comment on that. Kindle and some other readers like Zinio and MyLibrary(ePub reader) is pre-installed on it.

Hope any of my answers helped.

In the second vid the guy gets brave with a car key on the screen...

:)

You say you use Thumb keyboard?

I've been using SlideIT for my phone and I would never go back to the standard kb. SlideIT is similar to Swype but just looking at that swype video I think SlideIT is better, you don't have to do special twirly's for double letters or capitals, SlideIT autocorrects almost everything
