ASUS Eee Pad transformer

Vulk, Elimentals, I'm very surprised - actually somewhat shocked - at the lack of effort from the Android tablet manufacturers to match/beat the iPad in price and availability. It is as if they don't care. In SA with the severe shortage of iPad 2's there is a good opportunity right now to capture this market ... but everybody seems to be fast asleep. How can anyone realisticly believe that the average user with the money to buy into these systems - will willingly pay more for a non-Apple product?! We often hear comments about Apple being too expensive, but when it comes to tablets they smoke the rest. Something here doesn't make any sense.

And to add to this the build quality on non-Apple products are traditionally not on the same level as Apple. Another thread on the Samsung 10.1v confirms this. Why should I pay more for an inferior product? Yes, the specs are sky-high, but how well does the whole package perform against the iPad? Android tablets must become way more affordable else they will not be able to capture enough market share. I don't want to pay more for an all plastic squeeky tablet.

You do know the brand names are the trend setters or shall we say the Mercs and BMW of the tablet world. There is a huge market of R1500 and less tablets that we dont normally discuss here, but they are the ones that Apple should be afraid of. Worse hit is going to happen when Ice cream Sandwich comes out and the source code gets to the Apads and alike.

I would rather say the Samsungs of this world need to be afraid of these cheap knock-offs because Apple as a brand is very desirable and people will always buy their products (even if/when other manage to make copies of their products). Products from Samsung, LG, and others are not bought for the same reason and stand to be hurt far more by cheap Android tablets.

I hope the Transformer get to us at the prices that have been mentioned on this forum. Someone need to get the market correctly aligned.

I've ordered and paid for mine almost 3 weeks ago, R 4428.00 (Including KB Dock) from Rampage Gaming.

http://rampage-gaming.co.za/index.p...duct_id=11220&option=com_virtuemart&Itemid=53

They first said 1st June, then 3rd June, now it looks like it'll be next week sometime :(

I spoke to Rampage Gaming and the guy gave me some story that South Africa is only receiving 16gb versions and that the 32gb is not available. Hes obviously been misinformed because everyone else is selling both versions. Still, amazing deal for KB Dock and the tablet...even if it is 16gb. I guess you can just get an SD card and plug it into the keyboard for movies and stuff.

Spoke to Asus, the Transformer tablets arrived in SA this morning, should be in their warehouse before the end of today.

Here is my reasoning, people like you and me would go for quality so we would rather pay the R4000 and get a decent tablet with captive touch screen and loads of memory. But the everyman in the street that also wants a tablet but cant afford the R4000+ for quality iPad or Android will easy pay R900 for a crap tablet. Samsung/Asus would not have gotten that sale anyway.

But here comes the catch, now that the everyman got an Android device he will try and make the best of it even if its not as good as the others he might buy some applications or even worse, Android@home takes off and he can use his cheap tablet to do home automation.... when he does have money and wants to buy something better chances are higher that he might opt for a better quality Android as he has already invested in the platform.

Yes he might also go for iPad as he was upset with the crap R900 tablet as well, but I am willing to bet this is less of a % of people that will do that.

I also spoke to Asus. They said that the 32GB arrive next week and that the 16GB at the end of the month...WTF???

They also said I can contact Platinum Micro for further questions...

Now I'm baffled...

Did you call this number? + 27 (0) 11 783 5450

The Author of marine1 link also made a review with the Dock.

Actually got a lot more info from the 2 vids than the reviews I have seen on "paper"

I dont care if they fly them in, if they dont have them by the end of the week I am sooo going to upload complaints all over the net/papers.

I want the 32GB but what scares me is that no one knows whats happening. Even the retailers are baffled. Rampage Gaming confirmed about 3 times they are receiving the 16GB version on Friday. Asus say the 16GB only lands end of month but the 32GB is available next week....haha. Think I will call Zaps and ask them what they have heard...

Ok...Final word...

I called Platinum Micro and it was confirmed. The 32GB is in South Africa and all stores should have it early/mid next week.

The 16GB should be arriving on the 20th of June.

There will be no bundles with keyboards. The device will be sold separately. Keyboards should have landed too but it cannot be confirmed.

I would be careful with what some retailers say...like Rampage Gaming. Dont believe everything you read and hear...they are relatively clueless. I as a consumer went and had to do my own research. Sometimes I wonder why we even need a middle man. I wish I could have just ordered from Platinum Micro.
