ASUS Eee Pad transformer

hmmm that sucks, have read quite a bit about the units suffering from light bleed and really hoping mine doesn't!

Everything says it must be fully charged before using it, I can't if it's a must or not but I suck and never leave any new device alone for a full 8 hours. I am picking mine up tomorrow morning and will be in the office the whole day, might put it on charge and by the time I leave it should be pretty close to 8 hours.... but still, I know I won't be able to resist messing around with it a bit during the day :D

When I normally buy something new the battery has some charge. The norm is to use that up till the device dies, then charge it fully while its off. Only after the proper charge use it as normal.

Yup, loads of units have light bleed but mine seemed quite hectic...I think I gasped when I saw it.lol

If its only noticeable on a pure black screen then its not a big problem but if I can see it during video play back...Im going to throw my toys...

The manual says to charge for 8 hours before first use...are they mad!

Now, enough moaning...If I leave it on for 8 hours but play with it for a bit will it make any difference. Im very impatient here :)

mine's charging too..Only problem is there are no cases available et- no way am I gonna take it out of the house without one.
Found a nice one on Amazon but the seller didn't ship to SA.
RandomGRK u getting a case too?

Yup, definitely going to buy one. I have my heart set on this one specifically. http://tuff-luv.com/genuine-leather...se-for-asus-eee-transformer-tablet-black.html

Its expensive but to protect my TF, its worth it. Also, it protects the dock too :)

EDIT* The light bleed isnt actually too bad. And yes, I turned it on. I couldnt wait. The thought of bad light bleed was killing me. As soon as I saw that it wasnt too bad I turned it off again. I got a taste of what its like and now im gunning for more :) Im so excited to set it up and figure out Honeycomb!!!

Just to put the stock issues in proper light:

http://www.engadget.com/2011/06/13/asus-to-ship-300-000-eee-pad-transformers-in-june-surpass-all-n/

ASUS has had a hard time meeting demand for its Eee Pad Transformer since the device's launch earlier this year, but we clearly don't have component shortages to blame. Jerry Shen, the Taiwanese company's CEO, says that he expects to sell 300,000 of the tablets this month, following shipments totaling 400,000 in April and May. That figure puts the device in the number two spot for worldwide tablet shipments, just behind the prevailing iPad 2. At that rate, ASUS's latest hybrid will bring in NT $2.5-3 billion (approximately $86.6-104 million), accounting for 10 percent of the company's total revenue for June -- a figure which could increase after sales pick up in Europe and mainland China in Q3. As for North America, it looks like e-tailers are finally able to maintain inventory of the $399 (16GB) flavor -- it's listed as in stock with major sites, including Amazon and Best Buy.

Well. . I logged into my account details where I bought the Transformer and it said the following:

Order Date: Tuesday, 17 May 2011 23:59
Order Status: Backordered

I phoned them and they said that they were expected to arrive on Friday but they haven't arrived yet.

Ordered mine yesterday, picked it up this morning :D

So far, after messing around with it I see no light bleed so I am happy, still need to make 100% sure (still has the plastic on) but couldn't see any. Itching to get craking with apps and whatnot but no wifi in the office :( Well, there is but they won't give me the password....

So, I have the TF and in the booklet it says I should let it charge for 8 hours before I use it. Now that sucks. When I plugged it in it started up so instead I turned it off. So, is it possible to turn it on, leave it on charge and mess around with it or should I just leave it off.

Oh, and when it turned on I saw quite a bit of light bleed on the panel. Waiting to see what its like watching movies and normal use before I decide to send it back for a replacement.

Charging Lithium-ion Polymer

Charging Li‑ion polymer, also referred as Li-polymer, is very similar to a regular lithium-ion battery and no changes in algorithm are necessary. Most users won’t even know if their battery is Li‑ion or Li‑polymer. The word “polymer” has been used as promotional hype and does not reflect special attributes other than to know that the battery is built in a different way to a standard Li-ion.
Most polymer batteries are based on a hybrid architecture that is a cross between Li-ion and Li-polymer. There are many variations within the polymer family, and the true dry polymer battery for the consumer market is still years away. Also know as the “plastic battery,” this system was first announced in early 2000 but was never able to attain the conductivity needed for most applications at ambient temperatures. Read more about the Lithium-polymer battery and the Pouch Cell.

Simple Guidelines for Charging Lithium-based Batteries (Including Polymer)

A portable device should be turned off while charging. This allows the battery to reach the threshold voltage unhindered and reflects the correct saturation current responsible to terminate the charge. A parasitic load confuses the charger.

Charge at a moderate temperature. Do not charge below freezing.

Lithium-ion does not need to be fully charged; a partial charge is better.

Chargers use different methods for “ready” indication. The light signal may not always indicate a full charge.

Discontinue using charger and/or battery if the battery gets excessively warm.

Before prolonged storage, apply some charge to bring the pack to about half charge.

Over-discharged batteries can be “boosted” to life again. Discard pack if the voltage does not rise to a normal level within a minute while on boost.

http://batteryuniversity.com/learn/article/charging_lithium_ion_batteries

The main thing is to ALWAYS leave it OFF while charging.

The worst thing you can do is overcharge your tablet. This is the best way to make sure the battery does not last.

I've noticed that when I plug in my laptop it does not charge 100% of the time

Half the time it says "Plugged in, Charging"

The other half of the time it says "Plugged in, Not Charging" I assume this is to let the battery drain before it charges again. I think Windows obviously has advanced battery maintenance functionality, I will not assume the same about my Transformer.

To be save I will never have it plugged in while the device is switched on, if it switches itself on as you plug it in I'll just turn it off.

We will see tomorrow, how true this is.
The story I got from ASUS rings different in that they did get the devices but most of them was sold(Pre Orders). Only some 32 gig units that was not. Those went to the resellers for sales. They are expecting more stock, but its not confirmed if it will be next week or end of the month.

Edit: Why I say tomorrow, I am one of the Pre-Orders on the 16Gig + keyboards and was told on Friday that they arrived and will be shipping them ASAP. My delivery is suppose to arrive tomorrow.

Oh well I had to change my order to a 32.
Will wait for the keyboard then.

guys the wait will be worth it- i love my TF....was a bit of a struggle learning how to transfer files and getting to know Honeycomb- but it's GREAT!!!!!

Agreed! Im also loving it :) Everyone at the office is very impressed...even the Apple freaks

I keep discovering awesome functionality and I was surprised by Polaris Office. Its obviously no substitute for MS Office but cool to edit things.

I just want my keyboard!

Silkman, thanks for the help. I didnt get much of a chance to fiddle with file transfer yesterday. I got streaming right but not file transfer.
