ASUS Eee Pad transformer

Is the update supposed to pop up immediately? I'm still on 3.1

You know, you guys sound a lot like jailbreakers... :-)
Na, we don't need to jailbreak our device in order to use them normally, we aren't shackled by iTunes or anything.

You were stock and rooted, right? I've read a few posts that claim only non-rooted TF's see the update. Nothing here yet...

Yes I was on stock and used root to install apps, when I got news of the pending update I reverted back to normal.

Mine popped up with the notification and this after I even checked for updates where I was told there was none. So I have no clue how or when or what prompts for the update.

All I can say is there is not much changes except for this dam circle that I wish they didn't change. WTF could they not have left it an arrow is beyond me.

Why rooting then?

Root ≠ Jailbreak

Jailbreak is like getting "Power User" status on your device, where root is like getting system administrator access. We already power users on Android.

Cool, I don't know anything about either of them.

Any physical (not online) stores selling these for good prices? So far I know about Look & Listen (R4300) and Hirch's (R4200). Anyone else?

After many months of wondering which tablet, I am finally an owner of a brand new TF101 :D.

I plugged it in to charge and it came on, prompted me to enter details... The booklet says 8 hour charge before use :( is that really necessary?

I am so exited, this is my very first Android device. Man this thing is awesome!

Congrats! well I doubt many of us here adhered to that "guideline", it's way too tempting.

It switches on as you plug it in which kinda contradicts the manual.

After I plugged it in, I checked for light bleed and I checked the system out a bit before I switched it off and let it charge.

With Lithium Polymer batteries you "should" leave the device off while it charges.

Welcome to the club, well I must say its a 1st to hear someone buying tablet before the phone :)

As for the charge, I played around on mine on the 1st charge, one thing I did do is make sure it charges for 8 hours at least on the 1st charge before removing the power. 1st hours I think was the most painful as it found Updates and also synced to my Google account that had quite a bit of apps already that the device started installing.

Thanks guys. I soooo want to play with it  8 hours will only be @ 11 tonight.

What kind of defects should I look for? Besides light bleed?

Nor did I, after I switched on the screen I was looking at the back and sides of the device :p If you're still asking that question after you power on the device, chances are that it doesn't have the symptom.

Here are a few pics, lets say your screen is on and all its showing is a black screen, light bleed is when light "leaks" from the sides of the screen

Other things to look out for are dead pixels and the speakers.
I think some are worse than others, the right speaker plays noticeably louder than the left, although you might not notice if I didn't say anything :)

Hey Guys,

Looking for some assistance, been trying to setup my POP3 account. The incoming server settings work perfectly, but every time I try the smtp settings I get the
following error message "Authentication methods are not supported by the server."
I have triple checked all the settings and ports, cleared the mail cache but no luck. Anyone got any ideas.

Thanks

Why rooting then?
Rooting provides full access to your device, you can do some really cool things like overclock the CPU among other things.

For most people however, this is not necessary.

I might root at some stage but haven't felt the need just yet. The main reason for me would be to overclock.

EDIT: (And to have access to all apps & games regardless of location)

Can anyone list some persuasive reasons why someone should root?

I know there are some apps that require root.

Titanium Backup
Root Explorer
Market Enabler

Those are the apps that instantly jump to mind that require root.
Even though we have paid apps in SA now I still use Market Enabler for apps that are not yet available here. The other two I simply cannot live without.

Oh yes that's that's quite a biggie, having access to all apps & games regardless of your region, EA has quite a few good titles that are not available in SA, racists!!!
