ASUS Eee Pad transformer

See, this is my dilemma. I like the transformer, but I'm actually not interested in the keyboard at all - I'd only get it so that I have a usb port available. But if I get the keyboard as well, I might as well (price-wise) for for the iconia... except that the iconia is heavier (but probably not when you include the keyboard weight), and doesn't have as good a screen. I'm trying to weigh up the pros and cons:

Iconia:
- screen not as good
- heavier
+ has usb port

Transformer alone:
+ good screen
+ lighter
- no usb port (so no charging other devices; no usb drive file transfer; no using my phone as a 3G modem)
+ cheaper

Tranformer and Keyboard:
- heavier
- thicker
+ usb port
+ adds to battery life
(+ has physical keyboard, but I'm not really bothered by not having it)

I don't know what to dooo!

Problem solved.

Any sighting of the 3G version yet? I've just been to Look and Listen and they didn't have it... Anyone know more details when it will be available? I'm getting tired of the wait because I'm holding out on getting the Galaxy 10.1!

the supplier I am using has indicated monday / tuesday....will let you know if / when i get it!

Would appreciate hearing when you get it... Personally the Look and Listen guy said he'd give me a call on Monday so I'll post if they get it.

Good day

Im considering buying this tablet or the ipad2, my concern is that when ice cream sandwich comes out, that the transformer wont get the update, and that in 6 months from now, ASUS will drop support for this tablet. Knowing that the ipad2 will probably get updates for the next 2 years (from past experience with iphone, ipod, ipad 1). Does anyone know for sure whether we will continue to get updates on this tab for atleast 2 years, what happens if a really bad exploit comes out for honeycomb 3.2 and then ASUS doesnt update the transformer, and it becomes a R4000 paperweight?

I wouldn't worry about that - if ASUS did drop support...the guys at xda-developers won't for a few years.

But what if people prefer to use only the manufacturers software, since you are never sure that there is no funny stuff in a rom from xda-developers

Judging by Asus, current commitment and update schedule you dont have to worry about that.

Also note that stopping support is always a thread from any hardware supplier, even Apple, but at least in the Open Source world we have a way out. When Apple goes bust no one will be able to support it, ever, as the source code is not available vs Android that is open and available for anyone who wants to support it.

As for your XDA concern the above open source comment should also relax your fear on "funny stuff" as the source code is freely available so developers can always see what people put into the code unlike Closed systems where you have to take the word of the Original suppliers.

But to be honest, I really would advice you to look 1st at what you want the device for and pick one on that decision, cause I have to admit my iPad is a great toy and I love the games on it more so than Android, but when it comes to functionality my Eee Pad is the best.

interesting... so is it worth waiting for this Padfone thing? What else is coming out soon by Asus?

Ordering mine from sybaritic for R5,777.00 cant wait to get it and play with it going to be a great addon to my Samsung S2 =D.

I just got my keyboard this weekend. How do I open the flap on the keyboard ? is there a button or a latch? I tried to flip it open but it seems firm. the user manual isn't much help.

Its just firm but when the tablet is on it feels perfect.

As for the USB covers, I broke mine off. They way to much trouble to try and open.

So do I just lift it up from the middle of the flap to expose the connectors?

Yep, if you really concerned just Google "Youtube and Asus Eee Pad Keyboard review", most of the vids shows how you open it by hand.
