ASUS Eee Pad transformer

Is the EEE Pad Transformer a good buy right now or is a better version coming soon at around the same price?

If I had to buy again right now, I would still buy the Transformer

Hey Gents,

Need some advice.

Is the Transformer suited to word processing? A relative wants to use one (mostly) for writing a book, and when not on the dock for normal tablet stuffs.

Is this a good idea?

I would go with a solid NO.

Yes I can use it to read and write Office documents but I would not advise any tablet for prime use on writing a book. Get a netbook or cheap instead with proper Libreoffice or Microsoft Office instead.

Netbook = R2400 / Tablet = R5000

Hi Guys,
New to the forum.
Bought a transformer last week, had hassles straight out the box where it would not startup. Did a hard-rest and left it to charge.
worked fine for 3 days, put it to charge, charged to 100%. Played with it a little, put it in sleep mode and it went completely dead.
hard-reset didn't work either. Returned it back to supplier for a new one.

Has anyone else had a problem with this?

In all the forms I've seen, this is the first. So I doubt it.

ok,

1. when i get the new one should I leave it off and let it charge the 8 hours or can i put it on and let it charge?
(There isn't even a charge indicator)

2. Also how do you backup apps, can you not backup apps similar to your itunes app library? if not, does that mean
that if my tab crashes i need to re-download all the apps again, rather than syncing them back via your PC?

3. When an OTA update is done, does it upgrade firmware and OS or is the firmware the actual OS?

Apologies for so many questions. I've been an avid iOS user, and not so familiar with android.

Thanks

1. The transformer cant charge whilst off, it always switches on automatically. But maybe you should let it charge for 8hours and not play with it.

2. You cant backup apps...you can however go into the market and go to ''my apps'' where it will list all of the apps you have downloaded, and redownload them from there, saves you from having to search for them all over again. You can use titanium backup to backup apps, however you need to root your device to use this.

3. Well the OS is android, and when you update firmware, it will download the latest version of android available for your device. For example, when i got my transformer it had Android 3.0. I then updated to 3.1 a while later. And then a few weeks later i received the update to 3.2 . All of these are still honeycomb, as android honeycomb is 3.x. The firmware updates fix any bugs, unlock new features (sometimes), and increases performance overall, in terms of speed, battery life etc etc.

Not quite sure what you mean by ''if my tab crashes''. Do you mean if it breaks completely and needs to be replaced? If your apps are vanishing after your tab goes into this deep sleep that you are describing, then your tab had some serious issues.

The only time you should ever have to reinstall apps, is if you get a completely new tablet, or if you wipe the device.

How big are the updates by the way?

I have an Acer Iconia A500 instead of the transformer but for the most part Android is still Android - the tab came with 3.0.1 and I now have an update notification that should be to 3.2 that weighs in at 382mb - however tried to download it multiple times and the dl often freezes(stuck saying x/382mb completed and dl'ing at y Kb/s) or completes only to find that the file was somehow not downloaded properly.

This was done using wifi from mostly the same location and had the same problem with my phone software a few months back, although that was only 20-50ish MB so not as much a problem

I'm going to get a new tab as one i purchased was faulty. I downloaded about 200MB worth of apps on the previous tablet.
So now i have to re-download them again, as there is no way of backing up android apps, so i think. What i was asking, if there was
a way to backup apps similar to itunes. I find it really crazy that you have to constantly re-download apps if you wipe them
or get a new tablet

Also how big are the firmware updates?
is rooting similar to jailbreaking & what are the advantages of rooting?

Pretty sure you can back-up your apps via Astro File Manager as well.

Edit: Although I'm not sure if you can back-up your user data together with the app as you can with Titanium Backup.

Edit2: Astro -> menu -> Tools -> App Manager/Backup

1. 1st charge is mentioned in the book to plug it in and go for 8 hours.

2. If you want something thats simular to iTunes go look at http://global.mobileaction.com/download/android.jsp
you install https://market.android.com/details?id=com.mobileaction.AmAgent on your android device then it allows you to remotely sync and back up your device.

I must admit I have not tried it on a Tablet but should be the same, I use it to sync my phone all the time.

It allows you to Browse the device file system as well as backing up, Contacts, messages, applications, music and Photo's

3. depends on the update you get both firmware updates and OS updates Example last update included keyboard firmware update with the OS updates.

Just need to say big up to Elimentals!

Thx for all your help in the Android community... You always post clear answers and facts, links, screenies etc. obviously taking up a lot of your time.

I for one, appreciate it!

Can I get a +1 ;)

LOL thanx, but it seems this time it was a waste :(

Wifi manager does not install onto the tablet.

Guess best way to back up then is to use something like ES file Explorer and back-up applications to the SD card and copy to PC via WiFi SMB shares or USB cable.

Pity.
