Asus G73SW vs Gaming Rig....

I'm planning on buying said laptop w.r.t mobility and the punch it packs cause I'm gonna use for gaming and we orgnaize LAN's a lot.I know upgrades aren't so widely available
on laptops.I can also use the money to buy myself a desktop gaming rig and know
I can upgrade when the need arises.Any input is welcome on this please and because the lappie is about 20K,what components would you guys suggest if I go the Desktop route?

I've seen lots of LAN organizers on lappies with no problems at all. I remember seeing Werner (Who did MPLD till this year) 2 years back when I was up in Pta and he couldn't stop bragging about his gaming laptop that he uses. I see the G73SW has a GTX460 VGA card in it, which isn't bad, but for the price I'm not sure.. I'll edit this post just now and see what you could get for R20k just for the fun of it... (Although take a look at randomwalsh's thread, for R10k that's half the price of the laptop with a screen included).

I used to have a LAN every weekend when I still stayed up in Pta and I had no trouble with just packing things into my bag and going. Used to carry everything once, bag over shoulder, LCD under left arm, chassis under right arm (although chassis are bigger now, so I'd say you'll walk twice). Getting set up is not that time consuming, it takes 10 mins max to get things out, on the desk, go behind, plug everything in (it's like 4 cables) and there you go. - Although power failures won't affect your laptop...

CoolerMaster HAF-X Chassis = R1 735
Intel Core i7 2600k = R2 645
CoolerMaster Hyper 212 Plus = R250
Asus P8P67-Pro = R1 865
8Gb (2x 4gb) Corsair XMS3 CL7 DDR3-1600 = R1 325
LG E2360T-pn 23" LED = R1 800
Corsair AX850 = R1 920
Club 3D Radeon HD6990 = R5 890
2x 1Tb Seagate 1Tb 7200RPM SATA6G = R1 020
60Gb OCZ Vertex 2 2.5" SSD = R1250
DVD Writer (Samsung) = R175

Total = R19 875 (Add R120 for shipping = R19 995)

And no, I didn't plan it to come withing R5, I quickly threw it in and came up with that.

*Don't flame me on this if you don't agree, it's just a quick scope of what there is for R20k, not a recommendation. If I was recommending I'd add up to a R10k PC with an i5 etc.

I'd rather buy an awesome machine for like 15K and then a nice little lappy for 5K if you need it for uni or what not...

True, I'd also rather go the desktop route and save tons..

What I meant was the effect it has on the PC. I was at a LAN in March and saw a 2 day old GTX560 die after a power failure on a friend's computer. Luckily he had it RMA'd the next day.

I would question the quality of his PSU if that happened. But my vote is still for pc
 
Yeah I would vote for a PC, and nakedpeanut has a good point - the cash you save can be used to buy a cheap laptop if you need one. A R5000 to R6000 laptop is plenty decent.

You can even go for a PC built in a lanboy case, or something similar in size, to make it easier to carry to and from LANs. Luckily monitors are now much lighter than they used to be!
 
My brother bought a Lenovo Thinkpad W510 for R6500 off Gumtree this week, and the laptop retails for about R19k: eg. http://www.laptopdirect.co.za/laptop_specifications.php?laptop=36905

If you can either import or get a 2nd-hand bargain on a gaming laptop, then by all means go for it.

If you're serious about gaming, then I would most definitely suggest a high end gaming desktop PC above a laptop.
For R10k you can get a beast of a desktop gaming PC: i5 2500k, 4GB RAM, HD 6970

Now if I change the screen to Sammy 27"?How much is such a screen?
 
Seriously look at my rig on the thread. Only 8 days old and an absolute beast at a bargain.

This S27A550H is R4 585, so that'll make the total R22 780..

But I'd then maybe go down to a 2500k with a P8P67-M Pro MB, drop 1 of the HDD's.

If you really are interested in going the desktop route you'd have to go through it properly and see what you'll want to change. That was more of a quick scan of what you can get for the price.. (Although I wouldn't mind having that:love:)

Not bad at all.I'll drop 1 of the TB HDD's and I don't need the "k" CPU's as I'm not gonna overclock...

You can get a G73SW for around 14K and not 20K, so its a no brainer when compared to a PC - I have a slightly older model Asus ROG laptop and coupled with PC xbox controllers, awesome laptops for games.

From where?Cause most places quote what Libertas has quoted me if it's not in fact more expensive....

I know that we're not yet affiliated with the official Asus importer, so the price 'should' be a bit lower than the R20 555 we've got it for..

I'll update that post just now.

DVD Writer (Samsung) = R175

Total = R21 280 (Add R120 for shipping = R21 400)

Took out 1 HDD, dropped the PSU to 750W which should be fine, changed CPU to 2600 non k, changed motherboard to P8P67-M Pro.

What you can maybe do to shave a few Rands off is get a cheaper chassis down the RAM to 1333MHz and make the PSU a Corsair HX750..
 
google is your friend, confirmed 14k, but let libertas sell you a Pc, shame man, times are hard
