GIGABYTE has left ASUS in a none-too happy mood. At a GIGABYTE media event last week, the manufacturer stated that ASUS' Energy Processing Unit is marketed as a hardware-based energy solution that is anything but. GIGABYTE claims ASUS' power-saving feature is all software-based and doesn't deliver on promises.

ASUS, the Taiwan-based manufacturer of motherboards, graphics cards, notebooks and a whole lot more, isn't pleased and today made this official statement:

It has come to our attention that a certain Taiwanese Motherboard Manufacturer has made false claims against ASUS motherboards. These claims have given rise to false information being communicated in both the mainstream media and technology channels. ASUS wishes to clarify the issues and so avoid any further confusion.

After investigation, it is clear that this company in question made use of a sponsored gathering of local and international media to deliberately spread information that we consider both untrue and without credible verification. This “disinformation” is not only extremely damaging to ASUS but also completely misleading to the consumers.

ASUS reserves the right to take legal action against any individual, organisation or corporation which creates or spreads such rumours.

Clearly, ASUS and GIGABYTE aren't the best of friends right now. GIGABYTE is no stranger when it comes to making derogatory remarks about its close competitor, we're already looking forward to its retort.

I like both ASUS & Gigabyte... Thing is, Asus has been around longer, and been loving their motherboards!

What is bothering me is that Asus talked about misinformation etc, but said nothing to show that Gigabyte is wrong...

I like both and rate them at the top of mobo manufacturers. I think the consumer will win this fight :D

If it is software-based, that would in layman's terms mean that I shouldn't buy an ASUS motherboard for my Linux computer, because they generally don't make software utilities for anything but Windows. So I just hope (the mb I'm looking at doesn't have super special power saving powers anyways) it is not (only) software-based but rather hardware based.

Still a die-hard fan of both manufacturers.

Gigabyte is indeed spreading untruths as the Asus EPU system does make use of a chip on the board to control power consumption much like Gigabyte's DES system.
The difference is Gigabyte's DES is seemingly more flexible with several more states than the Asus EPU system which last I checked only supported two states compared to the 3 or 4 on the Gigabyte equivalent. Gigabyte's version also has without question a better software, however ever to say Asus's implementation is software based only is beyond stretching the truth.

Sounds fair enough to me...
