Asus Rog Ally

Like the fact that we can now select 6GB of vram. Though the 16GB is starting to be the only real thing holding this back and it's not easily swappable.

Yeah the 16GB is starting to be an issue. I het a popup in forza horizon 5 about memory.

You can set it to 8gb though?

Is it complaining about system memory or gpu because I wanted to drop it to maybe 2G on the gpu so more system memory is available.

That's because you set too much VRAM or too much system RAM. Forza 5 runs very well at 1080p at 60FPS.

If you keep at auto should not complain I think. Otherwise for 2G video buffer you must run at 720P with RSR.

I leave mine set to auto as well. Granted I dont play demanding games in handheld mode most of the time.
Let the system manage the resources but you might find that in the Asus software under diagnostics, you can free up some system memory. Im not sure what it kills though. And set priority to gaming mode in that software as well

If you set it to say 4G or 5G it requires a reboot to apply so how does Auto work? Does it dynamically change it in game or what? I'm curious. I think it's set to 4G by default?

I'll be honest with you, Im not entirely sure how but it adjusts it dynamically in game.
This is where opinions differ on the "best" settings for stuff. the default is set to 4G though.
In some games the recommendation is to leave on auto unless you get weird texture rendering.

I guess it doesnt hurt to try the setting though and report back if it actually makes it worse or helps?

Noticed something interesting. On Turbo mode I see it boosts up 42W APU WATT but on manual mode it's capped at the max 30W and doesn't exceed that. On Turbo mode the fan curve is lower, so it runs hotter. Would have been nice to have that 42W boost even in manual mode.

Yeah it was getting really hot last night, was blue screening as well

That actually makes sense I'll set mine to 3GB, I did notice at Auto some games would actually lose textures and I was like sigh. I'll test things like Crysis and Mechwarrior on 3GB and 8GB to see

My Ally arrived now, busy setting up windows and such via keyboard and mouse.

Excited af!

It's a very cool device. And with emulators you can play PS1-3, Switch, PSP etc games. Here's a game I own on my Japanese PSN account which is a PSP game which plays on my JP PS Vita. Now works here with the PPSSPP emulator with built in joystick support. PS3 emulation also looks good.

Nier Replicant 1080p 30FPS on high settings, in game performance mode off, in the village on 15W gives me 30fps. It goes up only by about 2-3 fps for 30 W turbo mode. On 1080p Low settings/in game performance mode it gives me 48 fps on 15W perf mode.
It's not playable on silent mode 10W at 1080P but at 720P with low settings / silent 10W mode gives 29-30 fps. The sound is choppy though, even if set to mono.
