Blast from the past, before the Great Video Games Crash of '93.

I've lost track of how many times Atari has been sold, merged, acquired and generally shuffled around ... must have had at least a dozen owners since the days it ruled electronic games

83 the crash was then not 93. But also it was only really in the US, the rest of the world didn't experience this.
The UK didn't really get into consoles and was doing home computers, Japan was already on the Famicom in 83.
 
Maybe they saw how Nokia has made a resurgence and got ideas.
