ATI HD4850 Launched!

4850 is very light on power if I remember correctly, only one 6 pin PCI-EX power socket required and 100 odd watts?

But what you need is a good chassis with air flow or a fan sits directly on top of the card, lots of review/tests done by people who got 4850 showed idle temp could be up to 80C, but under full load is like 86.

Could be a problem with new card so the thermal fan control in driver/BIOS not working that good, or you can always get a Zalman VF900 for less than R300 and this should lower the temp for at least 20C.
thats good news!:D
I think I am going to get me one of those:cool:
Im just confused, do you think its a good choice? With Nvidia dropping the prices of other cards now?

Our end user will benefit at the end. But it seems like almost everyone agreed that this time ATi brought out really good cards in performance/price/power consumption wise.

And hopefully my VF700 will also work... If I one day get a new card.

We should ask RPM to use part of the community fund and buy a card or something and give it to one of us.....:p

@ ld13
Do you think the price of the 4850 will drop to under R2000 soon? Cus im wondering if i should wait for that instead of getting a Nvidia 9600Gt?

I do not see it going down much in the next week imo - The lowest is R2349 at the moment, down from R2799 when I first saw it. I'm not expecting it to go under R2000 soon unless Zones decides to have a go at it.

The cheapest 9600GT is about R1650 vs the HD4850 at R2349. Quite a bit of a price jump but so is the performance that the 4850 puts out as well. I'd wait a bit, because this early release caught everyone off-guard and the shops is only getting in proper stock by the end of the week. I'm hoping for more competition by next week with more brands to chose from. Maybe even lower prices :)

Arg, I just bought a 8800GT >.< a few weeks ago. Where the hell was this card then!?

But at least mine has a nice Zalman fan on it :)

BTW I see the HD4850 is going for R2250 at ikonicit.co.za

Prices coming down :D

I'm getting them into stock tomorrow :) ... got the phone call from my supplier today :P

My supplier has stock ... the rep is delivering them this morning, I got confirmation last night.
Damn ... I woke up with fever shivering like a porcupine ... its gonna be a *** day seeing as I'm the only one who can collect and deliver orders ... :(
