so is the transportation cost to SA what makes it expensive to self import a piece of hardware like this?

No, everything sold outside us/canada usually gets "europe" tax added to it. From what i gather.
 
i may be off side here but wasn't there something from something around 3 Manuel budgets ago that said PC components no longer attracted customs tax?

I recall the no-tax thing on pc components but I don't think it ever came into effect. I was so happy when I heard about it too, but I never saw a price dip :(

ATI Radeon HD 4850 - benchmarked against mid-range and high-end GPUs

Looking at both the mid-range and high-end benchmarks, the all-new Radeon HD 4850 is comfortably faster than the card it replaces, the Radeon HD 3870. Benchmark numbers are up, generally speaking, to GeForce 9800 GTX levels, and it's no wonder that NVIDIA's felt compelled to hacksaw pricing by 30 per cent, bringing it in line with the red team's new star.

Clouding the high-end space further - and we'll include benchmarks from these three SKUs - are the $229 (£145) GeForce 9800 GTX+, $299 (£179) Radeon HD 4870, and $399 (£250) GeForce GTX 260. We'll be adding them to the comparison list for a larger round-up next week, as well as looking at varying CrossFire and SLI performance, especially with respect to the HD 4850 and GeForce 9800 GTX parts. Our HEXUS.bang4buck graph will be rolled out to determine which products offer the most performance-oriented value, so, please, head back for an in-depth look at the architecture and, of course, numbers.

Until then, the £125 Radeon HD 4850 has redefined what's possible in the mid-range space, so much so that NVIDIA's been forced to do something disturbing: reducing current prices by up to 30 per cent.

The new 30% cost down version of the 9800GTX/+ will probably using non-reference design and non-reference material, which may upset some people.

In a normal situation I would guess the price in SA to launch at sub-R4200 and to fall to sub-R3800 within 2/3 weeks. But if there were to be any shortages, like there is going to be due to the GDDR5 ram chips, I don't see the price going below R4000 soon. :(

In other news...
-HD4870 launching tomorrow. Stock within this week in SA.
-Price drop of HD4850 to a mere R2399 @ landmark. :)

:D I am just guessing, since our price here for 4850 is double of what you pay in far east, so I used the same formular and got to the price for around R4500, but the price difference between 280 is not that great, so maybe you are right. I really want a 4850 if it's under R2K.

Do you think the price of the 4850 will drop to under R2000 soon? Cus im wondering if i should wait for that instead of getting a Nvidia 9600Gt?
 
to be honest guys - I would rather just throw the extra $$ in and get the HD4850 instead of the 9600GT which im pretty sure will be completely obsolete by December (in my opionion please dont flame :D ... or maybe you can just a little :rolleyes:)

i for one am grabbing one from landmark this weekend... anyone know if they have stock?? or am I going to be waiting 3 weeks?

4850 is very light on power if I remember correctly, only one 6 pin PCI-EX power socket required and 100 odd watts?

But what you need is a good chassis with air flow or a fan sits directly on top of the card, lots of review/tests done by people who got 4850 showed idle temp could be up to 80C, but under full load is like 86.

Could be a problem with new card so the thermal fan control in driver/BIOS not working that good, or you can always get a Zalman VF900 for less than R300 and this should lower the temp for at least 20C.
