ATM Bombings : successful?

Seems these are happening at almost 1 per day - but are they successful in getting the cash?

I read an article a few months back saying that most the time, they aren't. If that's true - why would they do this almost daily?
 
Some are successful. Probably those account for 5% or so and the rest are "copycat" bombers.
On the other hand, they are ALL successful (or mostly), and the banks down-play it to prevent even more.

It seems to me that if the bomb is big enough to crack open the ATM it also does some damage to the actual money?!

What I don't understand is why banks (who appeared to have almost eradicated cash in transit heists with moneyboxes that are boobytrapped with dye) don't implement a similar system in the ATMs.

Each ATM can have an accelerometer or mercury switch that will activate the dye "bomb" if enough force is applied. Set it higher than someone banging on the ATM and it should do the trick. What doesn't get burnt is pink?!

It must be cheaper than replacing the ATMs.

I know it might channel the syndicates into other targets, but all that happens now is trying to find out after the fact who did it from grainy CCTV camera footage...

It's not the Dye that stop'd it.

It was the Police ambush in which 11 was killed. Since then it has become to risky for them, they rather hit ATM's as they are softer targets. Also the ATM are build cheaply and that is why they are being bomb'd. The new machine replacing the bomb'd ones are not as cheap and an Nuke would not be able to break them :D
 
And yet it STILL costs more to draw money from a teller than from an ATM.
I increased my ATM limit just so I can now go once a month into a well lit secure shopping mall to draw cash. It is becoming difficult to find an ATM these days elsewhere.

My [-]2c[/-] errr, .... ? Eradicate money all together. Electronic cash FTW.
 
I can tell you one day there is going to be a very UNSUCCESSFUL one at a petrol station in the wee hours of the morning. Will only be able to identify the charred remains of the robbers by their dental records.

Until recently, ATM's haven't been very well protected. I know this because I had the insides of one that they chucked away.

As to what's next they will probably resort to payphone cashboxes, Mall pay stations, and the like

Here's a wild idea: Design ATMs so that the money is stored adjacent to a sealed container filled with napalm or other incendiary agent. Then when it gets bombed, all the money burns.
