Just wanted to alert people on the forum of ATM's that initially reject your card but on a retry accept it. What happened was a duplicate card was made during the first try and during the second try there is a camera that records your pin.

Somebody recently withdrew R2000 from my bank account at an ABSA ATM. I am a Standard Bank customer and was nowhere near an ATM during that time. After much discussion one of my friends said that this scenario was a possible explanation of what happened.

ALWAYS cover your pin, i may always look like a fool covering my pin with my wallet/hand but no camera is going to see any of my numbers! Sorry to hear though!

Seconded.

I always do this, usually with my wallet as well.

I've seen some really careless people type in pins in such a way that the whole world could see it and seriously don't understand how anyone could do this. If they only knew how easily someone could clone their card.

personally i use "cash send" to send myself cash via SMS. Dont mind if they can see the "pin" because it only works once. ; )

It costs a bit extra, but so does drawing cash at a saswitch ATM.

I place a finger on each button, obscuring what finger is pressing a number. I also am looking to see if someone is watching and try and obsure the view even more like moving into their field of vision. Also, don't draw at an ATM that appears dodgy or damaged. This includes stuff like stickers being sticked onto it or having been removed.
Also set the daily withdraw limit to the maximum you would need. Mine is set to R500, never really needed more than that and when I do, I just draw over two or three days. All my accounts I pay via EFT which the bank can track.

I've seen people typing with a single finger in plain view to all the people around them.

hmm...i'm wondering if this will really work - wouldn't the camera be able to pick up subtle finger pressing?

great idea though, just wondering...

If its right over your hand, yes. Need to watch out still. Make sure no one is looking at your hand. No wierd attachments are on the ATM.
No true defence is a single defence.

I think using your card in stores is equally as dangerous. I was in a store a few days ago, where there three people around me whilst I entered my pin onto the machine, two behind the counter and the 3rd staff member right next to me chatting with the other two. Maybe just paranoid - but can never be too sure nowadays.

Ways not to enter your pin...

Even though his hand is covering the keypad, its raized and someone from behind can still see.

Besides hiding your pin, I wanted to just emphasis that if an ATM rejects your card the first time, don't insert it a 2nd time because they duplicated your card and wait for you to type your pin.

I have done a couple of training courses where this is concerned and will never withdraw cash from an ATM if ANYTHING seems out of place.

Another thing to note here is with Absa specifically. Sometimes you draw cash at Canal Walk then when you get a statement a month later it shows that you withdrew cash in Gugulethu. By this time you have forgotten about the money that you got at Canal Walk and you get the picture...

Well, I don't recall a faulty ATM, but my card was cloned and I have had 5k withdrawn from my accounts from an ABSA MARSH, and NEDCOR MARSH (Which makes me think of Marshalltown) ATM.

Must always remember one thing, they can clone your card but they also need your pin! The cloning can go undetected, but you can always try hide your pin!

Just in general(from everyone's suggestions:
1)Cover it with your other hand or a wallet etc
2)Do a dud push(ie dont actualy push it hard, this works because even if they do see you entering numbers they cant see if its been accepted on the screen, camera focus on the keypad)
3)Always keep your fingers on more than 1 button and try to make it look like u are using them all
4)Be Aware, inspect your ATM!
