OK, Roman4604 seems to know his stuff about ADSL and he just mentioned that we should try asking photonman about the 4Mb problems lately.

OK photonman, there's 2 main issues that us 4Mb users have:

(1) Frequent disconnects. See rpm's thread here. Lots of users just lose sync to the exchange periodically and it's frustrating when you're in the middle of something (like GTA multiplayer :D) and your connection drops.

(2) 512k speeds. Look here and here. There's countless other places in the forum where users try to squeeze out 4Mb speeds using download managers but to no avail.

These issues are mentioned all the time yet we still don't know if there's a common cause.

Seeing as photonman has an insiders view, maybe we can try to get clarity on these 2 issues from him (if possible).

Thanks for your efforts photonman..:)

Hi,

1) This does not only happen to 4MB lines. My 384 line at home does the same.

Regards

i recon its the current copper infrastructure state that the people are not aware of and they want a 100% 4096 sync. telkom soooo shot themselves in da foot when they didn't implement adsl properly .

i wonder what the actual % of adsl callouts are related to poor cables/joints/ect....optics would have been a solid solution but nooo

8mb is going to be a nightmare...nevermind when we get adsl2+

the transfer speed is a another problem.

I sometimes wonder if this is not just another form of shaping, now only they can blame their "aging equipment", cable theft, and the like.

On a good day, I only have about 2 or 3 disconnects. On a bad day, It can be every 10 minutes

It used to happen to me on and off at three different locations... My previous office where I worked, my home ADSL and my new office. It seems to come and go in line quality and frequency of disconnects.

My home ADSL did it a lot, but seems to have fixed itself now.

I knew it was happening because Skype was dropping me every few minutes while I was in a call and would have to wait a minute for the line to come back and then dial again.

I had forgotten about it until I see your problems mentioned here. Hopefully as Telkom upgrades equipment and lines you will see an improvement.

Don't know what else to tell you other than for you to firstly check that your POTS filters are in good working order, and if you can help it, do not use the analog portion of your line for anything else, remove any other telephones, faxes or modems that you are not using from the line.
