Hi guys,

I upgraded my 512 line to 4 meg about a month ago. It only took them 2 or so days to do the upgrade, and for about 2 weeks it ran like an absolute dream. 400k download speed and 45k upload speed (give or take).
About 2 weeks ago, my internet seemed to be running quite slow, so i started doing some speed tests. The fastest my line has ever run since then is 52kB/s. My router though is still syncing at 4096down and 384up.

I've tried 3 different ISP accounts: Mweb, Openweb (IS) and Allyoucaneat. They all have exactly the same speed. NO more than 52kB/s. I use my Allyoucaneat account at work on my 4meg line at my speeds are fine (400kB/s), so it's not an ISP issue.

I'm paying for 1 meg ADSL, but only getting 512. I've logged a fault with Telkom, but no one really seems to know what's going on (no great surprise). They cleared the fault once without it being fixed, so i had to re-report it (which is frustrating enough).

Please could someone help me with my frustrations.

Same thing happened to me they found my card at the exchange to be faulty replaced it a week later and running 4mb now

Same thing my 4meg is now a 512k!!

Just before the long weekend I noticed things going really slowly, tried all 3 of my ISP account and even a different router, everything syncs at 4096/384 but I'm getting max 55KB or +- 450 kbps !! WTF Telkom!

4meg to 512k speeds issue

What area are you guys from, I'm in the randburg/fourways area?

I'm in the Sunninghill area, Sandton. Been fighting with Telkom for a few weeks now. Had 3 faults reported on my line in that time as they keep clearing the fault.

Latest update from Telkom: They reckon it could be a line clarity issue or something along those lines. What bullsh1t. The last guy's attitude towards me was: "There's not much we can do about it. Maybe just wait and see if it comes right." So he reckons i should carry on paying for 4meg JUST INCASE it comes back.

Don't you love how willing they are to help you? Paying customer my a$$....

Same problem with me here as well.

Upgraded to 4Mb a few weeks ago and it worked great for the 1st few days but then 52kB/s max download speed. I thought it might be a "single-thread" download problem but download managers don't seem to help.

Suggestions?

Calling Telkom is my LAST resort..

4mbit line capped at 512kbps? **UPDATE**

I have a 4mbit line using telkominternet and a number of other unshaped providers.

My line seems to be stuck on 512kbps!
I have called the tech support and a technician has come out to check the line, clean as a whistle. Got them to replace the port at the exchange too, but the problem still persists. Tested with two different modems too.

As soon as i try the telkom speed test the download shoots to 52kBps and stays there, never dropping in speed and with 100% consistency.

Its almost as if i have been soft capped at 512kbps, anyone have any ideas?

I called tech support and asked them about it, got them to reset my line - still the same problem.

Totally confused!! :confused::confused:

Dude it has happened to plenty of us here on the forum and the even the "Wise Ones" on here don't have a clue what the problem. I have had this problem for ages, and every now and again someone pops up a topic with the same prob and no one is any wiser of how to get it sorted. I sync at 4096 384 and cant go over 52k. The same as you. There are quite a few of us here on the forum.

It is NOT a ISP problem. ALL Isp products have been tested with the same result.

Any people with any other ideas feel free to share and help the bunch of us find a solution. The past months have been incredibly frustrating.

Are you able to check what t the modem is actually connecting at, and the line attenuation ?
my 4 Meg line connects at 1.2mb as i am too far from the exchange to get full 4mb.

i am synching at 4096 down and 640 up.
International and local affected the same.

Yeah, a few threads.

So far we have established that :
1. Telkom can't fix it.
2. Phoning their care line doesn't help much.
3. You won't be charged less.

FWIW I sometimes find the line maxing out a low synch level, ie 650k. Usually revets back to the right level if I reboot the modem.

I also noticed this; it seems to occur occasionally & mostly on international over http. Using a download accelerator like getright or DAP seem to help me. PTP and such are unaffected.
