4mbps running at 512mbps?

i saw in the other thread that replacing the card at the exchange might help, perhaps i will get them to try that?
(assuming they were bull****ting and didnt really replace it the first time)
 
even if i multi-thread my download to ftp.telkom.co.za its still capped at 512kbps
 
I finaly got my 4096 kbps line today...but for some reason it syncs at 1024...don't know if its the same reason...which is none it seems...anyone else have this problem?

i have just realised that this only started happening after the upstream speed was upgraded to 640kbps...

Hey there... I just upgraded to 4meg and am also experiencing the same. I ordered it on Monday and they said it would take a week. The next day it was working... but i never tested the DL speeds. To my surprise when i got home it was only getting around 20-35 kbps. I left it because I'm thinking that they still working on it over the week... today was a bit better, Was geting like 175-220kbps. Im gonna leave it for another 2 days.

Check it out, there have been a few good comments about it...i cant confirm this myself though.

Same issue here. I hardly get anything over 150kbps these days.
 
technician came around this morning, changed dslam and tested line.
Apparently i need the services of a "specialist" now.

Is worth asking Telkom to inspect why my ADSL line noise margin and attenuation is so low?? Where does the fauly usually lie in this? Is it in the box at the pole at the back of garden, it looks in a really hectic condition or is it somewhere else on the line on the route towards the exchange? I am not that far from the exchange > 2.5km.

Noise Margin 5.9 db 9.0 db (this can be anything from 4-7 depending on the weather)

I dont think your line stats affect at how quickly you download in this sense.

Rather how stable your line is and at what speed u can achieve a stable sync.

Your line stats are quite bad for a 1.9mb connection.
 
Possibly a messup with provisioning the incorrect service profile on the ATM network between the DSLAM and the ESR (since most ppl seem to have the correct sync profile on the DSLAM port)?

Man, Telkom's architecture is so 'old school' it was difficult to find an appropriate diagram. The best I could get was ...

There are generally 2 places a DSL provider controls the access speed;

Between 1-2: The rate at which the subscriber's equip (modem/rtr) can transfer data to/from the DSLAM port. This seems OK as ppl are syncing to the right rates.

Between 2-3: The rate at which the virtual circuit from the DSLAM port to the virtual interface on the BRAS (or ESR) can communicate through the ATM access cloud. This is where I suspect the problem lies.

Generally no rate management is done at an IP level (between 3-4) as its too complex and resource intensive.

Make more sense?

  • the line stats
  • or sync speed
between 1-2?

Not neccessarily, as at this point user sessions are not yet aggregated since auth/termination happens on the BRAS/ESR. So conceivibly some users profiles are incorrectly configured (e.g. should be Fastest=4mbps, but on Faster=512kbps) while others are fine (on same DSLAM/exchange).

But they generally seem better that 512kbps (i.e. > 640kbps ds sync), so this is not where the retardation is occuring.

The config (profile) on the subscriber side (DSLAM port to customer) and on the trunk side (vc between DSLAM & BRAS) are independant of each other. Therefore DSLAM port configured correctly for 4Mbps sync, while trunk side incorrect at 512kbps max throughput.

One can never be sure unless you have direct access to the systems, but the evidence does suggest the problem lies in this area.
