Is it worth phoning telkom and asking for a techie to check why my attenuation and SNR is so bad - my lines are rather old - probably installed round about early 1980's??. Maybe he can check at the pole whitebox if it is better and they can just fix it up there, toos out all the birds nests :). What is the physical infrastructure like for an ADSL line, how many boxes, exchanges, etc. does it go through before it reaches the exhange?

I have 2 pathetic little pieces of copper running into my house, But i have around 10 pairs available, only 2 connected.

They run out the Kitchen wall - connect with the telkom black cable and underground to the Telkom manhole in the street, in the manhole they have a much larger cable with around 6000 copper pairs, this apparently this runs down the road to the Telkom box on the corner.

From there it runs down the road the the Telkom substation building about 2 km's
And I believe (from a discussion with a telkom high level tech) that is the main building in my area, with a direct Fibre route through to Barack St Cape Town.

AFAIK the DSLAM is down at the Main Building.

So counting the 2 boxes on your premises - 1 at your telephone / router and then the box where the telkom black cable terminates, there is a 3rd card aggregator of some sort on your street corner, and then a link to the Exchange in your area.

I stand corrected.

You pretty much got it right.

Main Building = local exchange, where the DSLAM resides
Barack St = main regional exchange, where the BRAS (Cisco 10000 series ESR) resides
Fibre route = ATM backhaul
street corner = SDC (street distribution cabinet), only a passive copper cross-connect with no intelligence.

Phoned on friday and requested the services of a specialist.
This morning I am woken up by a text from telkom telling me that my line fault has been resolved.

Tested the line speed this morning and its running at 4mbps again.
Would love to know what they did ;)

Decreased line speed anyone?

Still syncing at 4096 but getting 55KB/s max since last night, down from my usual 425KB/s. Anyone else experiencing this?

Just had the Telkom tech come to my house.... line is working perfectly fine now. Downloading at 415kB/s now :D

well the telkom tech came to my house this morning, was here for about 30 minutes, checked all the lines in my house, climbed up every telephone pole he could find within 1km of my house, went home and i am still gettin 55KB/s max. KTB, do you perhaps know what the guy did?

Probably the same thing the guy who came to me did. Checked the noise on the line, attenuation and synch speed which are all fine. Sometime today, you'll get an sms informing that your fault has been resolved. You'll then have the wonderful task of calling 0800375375 and waiting 30 minutes to have the fault kept open.

Enjoy

mine still in the system......waiting....Got a call from a techie on Saturday afternoon that said he will start testing but heard nothing after that, he seems to have vanished into thin air.... btw Telscum seems to be having serious network stability issues, my connection speed varies incredibly in the period of 1 hour.

Well, to be honest; i dont think she did much. She called me while i was at work saying that she was at my place, so i rushed home. So i walked into my house and ran the speed test.... low and behold, 415kB/s. I asked if she'd done something in the exchange and she mumbled something about cleaning up the connections somewhere. But to be 100% honest, i don't think that was the problem at all; otherwise i'd have gotten frequent disconnections.
I think that someone found the bugger up that someone else had done a few weeks ago and fixed it.
Just keep the fault reports active on your line and i reckon they'll figure it out eventually.
I also believe that there could've been a faulty piece of equipment at the exchange.
Just don't ever let them clear your fault because they "can't find a fault on the line".

Hmmmmmmmmmmmm

guys guys guys, so many threads on this.

I had the Telkom Tech rock up at my house earlier today. I told him to GET LOST.

If you haven't noticed by now, when 20+ people are complaining about the same problem it CLEARLY and OBVIOUSLY is _NOT_ anything to do with line attenuation, line noise. OR ANYTHING at your HOUSE!

Please think. And STOP posting the same crap.

Lets try actually find out where the problem is coming from. Everyone effected seems to be from JHB like, however we are all different areas. The problem did seem to start for all of us around the same time though. Which leads me to think, yes the problem is at the exchange, but clearly not.

Since we all on different exchanges, and obviously not every exchange messed up at the same time. Which leads me to believe it is some other point after the exchange.

This is definately a serious matter. And has nothing to do with what ISP you use, or what area you are in (In JHB). And I personally just want to try narrow it down, so when I do call Telkom we can ALL say the same thing to them. The more people phoning in the about the same problem the more chance we have of resolving it.

So if anyone can think of anything USEFUL to add to what more after the exchange it could be, then yeah. Please share.

I, for one, am interested in having an idea of how many people are having this problem. Telkom don't seem to be connecting the dots on this one so its up to us to help them out. We can only do that if everyone who has a problem lets us know about it. If having the same "crap" posted all the time bothers you, just scroll down until you find a unique post.

Wtf..Here I am paying for a 4mb line, check my wonderful speed it's sitting at. I'm fu*ckin pissed off. 645ms ping to capetown and it's normally 30-40.

What the fu*ck?? What's happening? The download speed is also a load of bull dust because it's sitting at around 7-10kbps even with multi threaded downloads.

As mentioned in previous posts, my guess is Telkom has some stuff up with the service profile provisioning system/process on the ATM access portion of their network.

I'm assuming they have different profiles corresponding to their products (384k, 512k & 4M), each with a PCR (peak cell rate) governing the max throughput (independent of DSLAM port configs). I think somehow the wrong ones are being applied to ppl's services.

Problem is how to convey this to the 1st level drones at the call centre?
