I have logged a fault 6 weeks ago and still no action, they have to physically fix my lines, upgrade the local boxes - you just have to be very very very very very very very very patient. BTW my international speed sucks tonight on my 2 meg profile can barely get past 30 kB/s usually around 150 to 180 kB/s.............freakin telscum

Yes MTN NS is ****. Vanilla.co.za is a **** site, can't see any prices

Well I was convinced it was a problem with the router... yet everytime I called MTN NS support they'd login to it and claim all was well. And it was fine... the problem however is MTN NS

Eventually I got the information that I was on an old platform AND my 512 was on a pairing of 20... so MTN NS were splitting my 512 20 ways...

...when I told the guy about the fact that I was paying so much for 18kB/s he told me that at least it was stable and besides they couldn't offer any SLA's on ADSL??!! What the hell kind of answer is that to a customer paying a premium for a service!!

The ONLY reason I was even with MTN NS was that they were able to offer me a fixed IP which I need to log into my company servers. I work for an American based company and they're rather particular about security... fortunately we have ditched that legacy system and the new setup uses a token based VPN. I recieved my RSA security token via FedEx last week and no longer need the fixed IP...

...so happy days as I shall be ditching the awful MTN NS (they reckon I have to give them 3 months notice!! That's another R6600 odd I have to fork over to them!!) as I have just signed up with a company called Vanilla. I spoke to a really helpful guy called Diren and within 20 minutes he had an account setup for me and I'm now blazing away at 420kB/s!!

So my speed is now 15 times faster and I'm paying 6 times less for it... still unshaped but on a 3 gig cap. As I don't do any downloading and use my connection purely for work and the occasional bit of X360 gaming I don't imagine I'll ever even get near the 3Gig cap... and if I do... then for about an extra R100 I can upgrade to 6Gig!! And NO contract, they just bill me at the end of the month and I pay them :D

Vanilla... check 'em out: http://www.vanilla.co.za/

Can't you just get them to work with your modem's MAC address? I think that would be better than simply relying on an IP address to identify you LOL

Thankfully the company I work for overseas is setting up a VPN which will mean I no longer require a fixed IP for security and I can tell MTN NS to go and get stuffed.

I also struggled to get prices off that site. But it is there. Just look a bit harder ;)

I highly doubt that they relied Just on the IP to identify him br34k. In the US etc etc having a fixed IP is quite common and hence that IP can be used in addition to eg a username+password to identify a person. Makes the whole system more secure if you know user X can only log on from IP Z, that is his office/home IP.

I have been having slow connection speeds for ages… I have an average of about 18kB/s download (240kbps on Speedtest.Net).

What speed is you modem syncing at?

The issue that everyone was having was that their modems were syncing at 4096k but the download speed was capped at 512k at the exchange due to someone at Telkom configuring things incorrectly.

looks like the problem continues , how did you'll fix this limited to 512k problem?

Geez i am so pissed off this morning. Woke up to "the 4mbps running at 512 problem".

Looked in Auth records from web africa and can see that the dslam port has changed overnight, so obviously this port is on a 512 "profile" despite sync at 4096.

Spent a loverly hour on the phone to 0800375375 without getting anywhere except raised blood pressure.

I am waiting, but without much expectation, for an ADSL manager to phone me back.

Does anyone know how or who to contact to resolve this?

Iv got the same problem since this week Tuesday!

Axxess speed test reports 492k!

Gonna call them in a bit

Ironically yesterday almost the exact same thing happened to me. I was getting 4meg, no worries, then suddenly WHAM about 420kbits. I threw my toys out the cot and logged a few queries helpfully pointing out the fact that i had beautiful SNR and minimal attenuation. The "techie" reset my line, made no difference. Then suddenly i got a phone call yesterday evenening from dumb and dumber and she was like " Eish Sir, you are only paying for a 384 line, and it is set to 512" For some reason NO-ONE else at telkom could see this phantom limiting (Line was synching at 4meg all along) and when i finally convinced her that my package (Do Broadband Closer 3) came with 4meg, she "reset" my account to 4meg and everything magically came right after a router reboot.... the funny thing is, whenever i phoned 0800375375 number THEY seemed to think it was still set to 4meg... Someone at Telkom is Delibrately limiting our lines it seems!

PS. I am in Gillitts, KZN... wonder if its specific exchanges they are messing around with?
