OK, my line is back to approx. 400 KB/s. Are there any people still experiencing problems?

Yes milomak.I was one of those.When Telkom fixed my line I was dropped to 384 upload speeds.Was wondering if someone might work out that there could be a correlation between the two.

I don't know about this - I was upgraded to 512Kbps (via the forum) and I don't have the 50KB/sec cap (I rarely hit 4Mbps, though
). Also, this problem has been around since before the upgrade was available, if I recall correctly.I would reckon more than 50% of people have had their lines upgraded to faster upload, more than 50% of people won't realize their 4mbit line has deteriorated to 512k.
Telkom resets your profile at the exchange trying to fix the problem, taking you back to 384k upload, which still does not fix the problem

I too have now just started experiencing this 512k speed on a 4096 syncing line ever since I logged a fault with telkom.
Going to try phone the call centre and see if anything they can do.

they reset my profile, didnt do ****. there was a problem at the exchange, the specialist found the problem

Well, its been 3 days since I reported the fault, yet still...nothing.
It really is amazing how the Telkom support have no idea what they are talking about...
I explained that my transfer rates on my 4mb line are slower than they should be, because I download at 50KB/sec. Which is about the standard of a 512 line.
The 'Professional' support service replied, "Oh yes sir, there is definitely a problem there, because 4mb ADSL lines are supposed to download at about 800KB/s - 900KB/sec."
Anyways, going to try my luck once again tomorrow

My 384k ADSL line was apparently upgraded to 4mbps yesterday but I did'nt notice any difference and my sync speed was still 1024/384 on my Netgear router (always been). Is there something I need to change on my router settings or should I be worried?

What are your line statistics (noise margin, attenuation, etc.)?
You say that you have always been synching at 1024/384 but only just upgraded, that's very strange. Are you sure this is the case?
Have you done a (local) speed test at www.speedtest.net ?

I am at the end of my rope with this issue.
I have been having slow connection speeds for ages… I have an average of about 18kB/s download (240kbps on Speedtest.Net).
I was on a 512 connection but in November 2007 upgraded to 4m hoping this would help… it has not.
I use MTN NS as my ISP and have an unshaped, uncapped, fixed IP account with them. Hellkom have been out numerous times and claim the line is fine, MTN NS also claim there is no issue their side yet here I am with a miserable 18kB connection
Hellkom was here again today and the tech managed to get 419kB/s through his ADSL modem on his laptop (using the Hellkom speedtest). I tried his ADSL modem on my machine and achieved about 360kB/s using the same test. Yet as soon as I connect to my MTN router (Cisco 800 series) I am back to the land of dial up.
ISP cost is R2223/month plus Hellkom fees… for 18kB!!
I am only 3.6km from the exchange. Any ideas? Is it a setting in my machines network settings? Both MTN and Hellkom claim everything is fine from their side… yet clearly something is amiss.
We had some issues in October 2007 where my router was syncing but there was no connectivity… the speed was dismal even before that… at least the connectivity is stable now, but the speed truly is woeful!!

Update: I have just received a call from the arrogant MTN NS service tech and he claims that I’m only paying for a 512k service… he reckons 18kB/s is reasonable. what they are going to do is move me from an “old platform which is very throttled” to a new platform to see if that improves the situation.
So you pay R2223/month for crap speeds simply for a fixed IP? This is only in Africa!!!
I have been told that to have a 4meg service I would need to then pay R11 000/month… diabolical!!!
Thankfully the company I work for overseas is setting up a VPN which will mean I no longer require a fixed IP for security and I can tell MTN NS to go and get stuffed.

Well I was convinced it was a problem with the router... yet everytime I called MTN NS support they'd login to it and claim all was well. And it was fine... the problem however is MTN NS
Eventually I got the information that I was on an old platform AND my 512 was on a pairing of 20... so MTN NS were splitting my 512 20 ways...
...when I told the guy about the fact that I was paying so much for 18kB/s he told me that at least it was stable and besides they couldn't offer any SLA's on ADSL??!! What the hell kind of answer is that to a customer paying a premium for a service!!
The ONLY reason I was even with MTN NS was that they were able to offer me a fixed IP which I need to log into my company servers. I work for an American based company and they're rather particular about security... fortunately we have ditched that legacy system and the new setup uses a token based VPN. I recieved my RSA security token via FedEx last week and no longer need the fixed IP...
...so happy days as I shall be ditching the awful MTN NS (they reckon I have to give them 3 months notice!! That's another R6600 odd I have to fork over to them!!) as I have just signed up with a company called Vanilla. I spoke to a really helpful guy called Diren and within 20 minutes he had an account setup for me and I'm now blazing away at 420kB/s!!
So my speed is now 15 times faster and I'm paying 6 times less for it... still unshaped but on a 3 gig cap. As I don't do any downloading and use my connection purely for work and the occasional bit of X360 gaming I don't imagine I'll ever even get near the 3Gig cap... and if I do... then for about an extra R100 I can upgrade to 6Gig!! And NO contract, they just bill me at the end of the month and I pay them
