Audi unveils an A1 crossover called citycarver

Audi’s smallest hatchback has been given a dose of SUV steroids, and the result is what they call the A1 citycarver.

The new hatch in hiking boots is similar in concept to Audi’s Allroad models, except there is no mention of quattro all-wheel-drive (it is for the city after all), but Audi has given it an extra 4cm of ground clearance - which it says is for better visibility and easier entry, not mounting pavements.

The Audi A1 is Ingolstadt's entry point to the brand. Built on the MQB platform and adopting the latest Audi design language both inside and out, the stylish compact car is set to be launched in SA in September 2019. We had the chance to drive the all-new Audi A1 at its international launch in Spain in 2018.

We have some pricing and engine details of the SA-spec Audi A1s. All Audi A1 units will feature the S tronic dual-clutch transmission and there's no manual gearbox option at all. The range starts at R359 900 and tops out at R488 000. Kicking off the range is the 30 TFSI, which is powered by a 1.0-litre turbocharged 3-cylinder turbocharged petrol engine. It produces 85 kW and 200 Nm, and is capable of 9.4 seconds to 100 kph. Efficiency is claimed at 4.8 L/100 km. This engine will be available in 3 levels of trim: 30 TFSI, Advanced Line and S Line.

The next engine up is the 35 TFSI, a 1.5-litre turbocharged 4-cylinder engine. It has 110 kW and 250 Nm on tap, and is slightly faster than its 30 sibling. Audi claims a 7.7 second sprint time to 100 kph, while it's said to consume 5.1 L/100 km on the combined cycle. Like the 30 TFSI, it's available in 3 levels of trim: 35 TFSI, Advanced Line and S Line.

Finally, at the top of the pile, is the 40 TFSI. Powered by a 2.0-litre turbocharged 4-cylinder, this model has a performance slant. Packing 147 kW and 320 Nm, Audi claims it'll hurtle to 100 kph in just 6.5 seconds. Despite its performance credentials, Audi claims 6.0 L/100 km. Petrolheads will notice the engine specs and similarities between the 40 TFSI and the Volkswagen Polo GTI, and yes, the two products share platform and engine.

Pricing! Second-gen Audi A1 Sportback heading to South Africa

Interestingly, though, the base model is a little less expensive than that initial report suggested. The line-up will kick off with the A1 30 TFSI, which employs a turbocharged 1,0-litre, three-cylinder engine worth 85 kW and 200 N.m. That’s enough, says Audi, for a zero to 100 km/h time of 9,4 seconds and a top speed of 203 km/h. Pricing starts at R359 900 for this model. The same powertrain will also be offered in “Advanced” and “S line” trim, with pricing set at R373 900 and R388 900, respectively.

Next is the A1 35 TFSI, powered by a turbocharged 1,5-litre, four-cylinder engine complete with fuel-saving “cylinder-on-demand” technology. This four-pot’s peak outputs are 110 kW and 250 N.m, allowing a dash to three figures in a claimed 7,7 seconds and a top speed of 222 km/h. The base model will be priced at R429 900, with the “Advanced” derivative coming in at R443 900 and the “S line” variant at R458 900.

The A1 40 TFSI will sit at the very summit of the local range, drawing 147 kW and 320 N.m (yes, the same as the Volkswagen Polo GTI) from its familiar EA888 turbocharged 2,0-litre, four-cylinder petrol heart. With a price of R488 000, the flagship A1 will reach 100 km/h from standstill in a claimed 6,5 seconds before topping out at 235 km/h.

Interestingly, Audi’s virtual cockpit appears to ship standard across the range. Ticking the R37 000 “Edition #1” box, meanwhile, will add “Python Yellow Metallic”, black 18-inch seven-spoke rotor-style alloys, darkened LED lighting and black detailing to your “S line” model.

ABT transforms Audi A1 Sportback into S1 (but it's still front-driven)

The folks over at ABT Sportsline have revealed their take on the latest Audi A1 Sportback, effectively transforming the hatchback into a second-generation S1 (although admittedly sans all-wheel drive).

Using the A1 40 TFSI as a base, the ABT package improves the familiar EA888 turbocharged 2,0-litre four-cylinder petrol engine’s peak outputs from the stock 147 kW and 320 N.m (yes, the same as the Volkswagen Polo GTI) to a healthier 176 kW and 360 N.m.

In standard form, this version of the A1 will reach 100 km/h from standstill in a claimed 6,5 seconds before topping out at 235 km/h. Unfortunately, ABT has not yet provided figures for the tuned model.

ABT furthermore offers new suspension springs that lower the vehicle by up to 30 mm. A set of ABT 18-inch alloy wheels (wrapped in 215/40 R18 tyres) can also be purchased, offered in two variants (matte black and gloss black). Both wheel options feature a recessed hub, ten spokes and a concave design.

DRIVEN: Audi A1 Sportback 35 TFSI S line S tronic

Summary

The new A1 Sportback is clearly a premium small hatch with loads of character, and it can be personalised to your heart’s content. With the new range, Audi has aimed to offer the same levels of tech and comfort found in its larger vehicles, just in a more compact, more youthful package. And here the Ingolstadt-based marque has succeeded.

Locally, the A1 Sportback 35 TFSI S tronic is available in three trim lines, priced from R429 900 for the base model (see pricing for the entire range, including the 30 TFSI models, here). You'll pay an extra R14 000 for the “Advanced” specification level, while ticking the box next to the S line package adds R29 000 to the base price. The press car we drove sported the latter, plus R143 600 worth of options (some of which are certainly not necessary).

Of the German Big Three, Audi is the only company offering a small premium hatch (if you don’t take BMW-owned Mini into consideration, that is). However, the new A1 Sportback’s biggest challenger might just come from within the brand itself ... in the shape of the A3.

Ultimately, though, if you’re in the market for the stylish A1 Sportback, the 35 TFSI is surely the one to get. It's a strong all-rounder, both in town and when a road trip beckons. And this more aggressively styled iteration certainly can't be accused of being "evolutionary".

Summary

The new Audi A1 certainly garners attention on the road – during our launch drive, people were keen to point at it and invite others to ogle it.

It certainly feels like a grown-up car with a sporty ride quality, but not to the extent that it will inspire your inner hot-hatch child to wield the A1's 'wheel with reckless abandon. There's even enough space in the back to accommodate people in relative comfort and the load bay is decent too.

Young buyers will be pleased by the levels of tech on offer. The new infotainment screen is quick and easy to use and all the controls are placed within quick reach. Ergonomically, the interior has been well thought out while the materials are mostly soft-touch and seamlessly installed.

The newcomer's pricing is on the high side, however. But bear in mind that the A1 has grown into a car that could steal sales from the Mercedes-Benz A-Class and upcoming BMW 1 Series. With more city dwellers looking for something small and fashionable, the A1 ticks the right boxes.

Audi's new Ford Fiesta Active rival features bespoke bodykit and upgraded suspension set-up

The new Audi A1 Citycarver, a more rugged, off-road-inspired version of the firm's compact supermini, has made its public debut in Frankfurt.

Based on the standard A1 Sportback, the Citycarver receives roughly 2in of additional ground clearance with the addition of larger wheels and an upgraded suspension set-up. However, it is positioned as a more city-focused ‘urban crossover’ than the brand’s fully-fledged Allroad models.

At the front, the Citycarver is differentiated from the standard A1 with two distinctive slots below the bonnet shut line and a matt black honeycomb grille, while the rear bumper has been redesigned to more closely resemble Audi’s Q2 and Q3 compact SUVs.

The Citycarver can be equipped with two petrol engines taken from the A1 line-up: the 114bhp 1.0-litre, three-cylinder turbocharged 30 TFSI engine, or the larger 148bhp 1.5-litre 35 TFSI.

Nine colours are available, with buyers able to select a grey or black contrasting roof. The stainless steel and grey exterior trim elements can be finished in black with the addition of an optional styling package.

Driven: Audi's new A1 has grown up in all the right places

The verdict

Styling-wise, I like what Audi has done with the new A1 – growing it in the right places by making it longer for more space inside and packing it with technology that’s only now dribbling down from the big boys, such as the Q8, the A7 and the A6.

Standard, the cars come well-specced, but you will want to take some of the cool safety and styling options. That might prove challenging as cars are being ordered as you read this, so you might not get exactly what you want. That being said, you can order your A1 as you like it, it will be built and it will be shipped within four to six months.

Pricing is keen at face value, with the 1.0 TFSI “30” model starting from R359 000, but dealers would have added some options, which shouldn’t put you off. If it were my money, I’d have the 35 TFSI at R429 900 for its blend of performance and driveability.

The 40 TFSI? Well, it was exciting to drive, but it can get expensive once you add some kit, with launch cars sitting in the region of R600 000 as we experienced them.

All cars also come with a five-year/100 000km Freeway Plan maintenance plan as standard. Audi says you can extend it to 10-years/300 000km.

Widebody Audi A1 Sportback One Of One By ABT Sportsline

As it stands, we will not be seeing a new Audi S1 based on the new A1 range so ABT decided to take matters into their own hands and build something quite outrageous.

This “One of One” A1 packs a potent punch as ABT has installed the motorsport-spec 2.0 TFSI engine from the TT Cup race car. Its four-cylinder turbocharged unit produces 310 hp (231 kW), but there’s an overboost function that pushes an extra 30 hp (22 kW) for a grand total of 340 hp (253 kW) while torque is over 400 Nm at all times. The brutal soundtrack provided by the four-banger is enhanced by a straight-pipe exhaust system that is rather unsociable.

This A1 Sportback is 55 millimetres wider at the back compared to the donor car thanks to the bulging fenders. The rear doors of the little Audi have been covered, while the back has gained a massive wing and a prominent diffuser flanked by the two fat exhaust tips.

German tuning company ABT has revealed a special, one-off Audi A1 Sportback-based hot hatch, dubbed the “A1 1of1”, with increased power and loads of extra kit.

The ABT Audi A1 produces a whopping 298 kW, more than double the power of the range-topping 40 TFSI derivative we sampled at the car's launch in Spain. According to tuners, this was achieved by swopping the car's standard engine with a “completely different”, uprated 2,0 TFSI engine.
