Would a kind soul please help me with some research...?

I'm looking at buying a second car and my weird obession with them has me leaning towards an Audi A3. Most likely a 2010ish model with around 90k on the clock.

I have heard rumours that Audis are quite expensive in the maintenance department, but I've got no number as a point of reference. Anyone here own/owned an A3 (or similar)? How much should one expect to pay for a standard 25k maintenance? Or put differently, how much should you reasonably budget for yearly maintenance?

My father-in-law has either an A1 or A3 and a service costs him around R8000 and he's got the older models (closer to 2000)

Ugh... you're shattering my dreams here... :)

You wouldn't happen to know if this was for a standard oil/plugs/filters/brakes service or for something more extensive?

No man, 8K must be for one of the major services.

On our A3 TDi, a 'normal' service is about R1500, a major service around R3500. Ours is coming up on the 120,000km service, which is a biggie - camblet change, DSG oil change, etc., quoted R9000 by Audi CFM.

The nice thing about Audis is that you have lots of VAG indies who can work on them for about 1/2 the price on labour alone. Parts you can get from Goldwagen, VW, etc.

So if I took it to a local VAG indie for the 120Kkm service, it would probably come to no more than R5000.

Don't take "R8k for a service" as being an actual service.

Things like suspension and brakes and so on will need to be replaced on any car and does cost a lot of money doesn't matter what you drive.

A standard major service should cost about R1500, but I would recommend not using a dealership and taking it to a third party Audi specialist instead.

Dealers will often replace anything and everything where it could simply have been repaired.

Also something to bear in mind is that the cambelt service on most of these cars is only at 180 000km depending on which engine specification.

Ok, these numbers are more in line with what I'm used to.

Thanks for the advice/numbers everyone. Now I just need to get over the fact that this thing will be more expensive to run/insure than my 2000 Corolla. :D

2010 model: u still got some time left there with the 5yr audi freeway plan.
but you only going to be safe for another 10 000kms till 100 000kms.

its all vw in there, so its not a train-smash cost-wise.. should be nothing out of the ordinary!

I am saying this knowing full well that there are no cheap cars to maintain these days, and that they are all similarly costed.

a3 is a nice car. its a premium hatch, and if you can make enough noise with audi before the freeway plan expires, you can get alot of the big maintenance issues solved then!

Thanks, this seems like a good thing to keep in mind.

I agree, R8k is not normal.

I currently drive a 2006 A3 2.0FSI. For the past three years services have usually been R2000 to R3500, even counting normal wear and tear replacements such as brakes, shocks, etc. Only expensive part that surprised me was the battery at about R1.6k, because it uses the same battery as A6 and A8. Higher current than standard if I remember correctly.

Recently had the only really expensive service... R30k. One small part in the clutch assembly had broken, causing my clutch to never disengage completely. My cambelt also needed changing (this was at about 169k on the clock, normally replace at 165k or 180k service interval). So the R30k bill was for clutch, new duel mass flywheel (most expensive part, upwards of 12k), cambelt replacement, the part in the clutch assembly causing all the problems, and all the labour.

Please note that I do service my car at the V&A Waterfront Audi garage, so they are not the cheapest in terms of labour.

However, on the whole I still think its not the most expensive car in the world to maintain, if you take everything into account. I certainly enjoy mine, and get good use out of it. I drive more than 80km's per day, so I'm in the car a lot!

Can get a respectable 3rd party service place (A&K Motor's Sandton, etc) that can do the major services for a lot cheaper. R30k for a cambelt, flywheel and clutch is just crazy.

You can extend the maintenance plan upto 7 yrs/200000km if its is still under plan. Will be expensive but will provide peace of mind

Just resurrecting this thread to ask if any new model A3 owners could PM me, have a few questions.
