Audi’s First Real Electric Car Is Already Being Recalled for Battery Fires

The Audi E-Tron electric SUV is off to a great start with, wait, no, actually it is already getting a recall and it’s for potential battery fires. Nobody has been hurt with the roughly 540 cars sold in America thus far, Audi claims, but it’s not a good look.

Again, there have been no reported injuries associated with the recall, as Bloomberg reports with comment from Audi:

The company issued a voluntary recall of approximately 540 E-Tron SUV models sold in the U.S. because of a risk that moisture can seep into the battery cell through a wiring harness glitch, spokesman Mark Dahncke said. The company isn’t aware of any fires or injuries because of the flaw, which affects a total of 1,644 models, he said.

[...]

Audi said there have been five instances globally where a battery fault light turned on because of the moisture issue. It began contacting E-Tron owners in the U.S. last week, prior to a warning from federal safety regulators, and should have a repair available by August.

“We are applying an abundance of caution as no such incidents have been reported globally,” the company said in a statement.

Audi e-tron Review 2019 - It's electric, but not as you know it... - OSV

Audi's first full electric car is a technological 'tour de force'. This battery-powered large SUV takes the best bits from the brand's conventional Crossovers and blends them with next-level electrification technology. There's a beautiful cabin and we're even promised engaging driving dynamics.

What's not to like? The price? Well you can't have everything...

N.B.: This is an EXTREMELY LONG & detailed video review - it's 1 hr 17 mins & 34 secs in duration.

Audi E-tron 50 revealed as value version of flagship EV

New entry-level electric SUV has less power and range but is significantly cheaper than standard model

Audi has revealed the E-tron 50 as a cheaper and lighter version of its flagship electric SUV.

Due to arrive in the UK in early 2020, the new variant weighs roughly 120kg less than the 2565kg E-tron 55, primarily as a result of its smaller battery pack.

The E-tron 50's 71kWh pack – likely to be the lowest-capacity battery Audi will offer in the E-tron – enables it to achieve a range of up to 186 miles on the WLTP test cycle. That's 55 miles fewer than the 95kWh E-tron 55.

I've been seeing more and more of them on our roads lately. I'm still not sold on the camera-mirror idea. It seems like an unnecessarily expensive item to fix. Otherwise, not bad looking.

One that has grabbed my attention here lately is the Jaguar EV SUV. ... SUEV? They're big, but very quiet. But with the prices these things are going for, I can't imagine any other EV than a tesla right now.

My boss just did a road trip from the arctic down to Denmark and back (+-5000km) in his new Model 3 and there were supercharger stations all over, so no issue.

Unreal hey. Scandi countries really have it good hey!

What model M3? Performance or mid-tier?

The long range mid tier actually has the performance version beat with 30km range and it's about R80k (10%) cheaper.

Audi e-tron Sportback

"The future is electric" - Audi is staying consistently true to its strategic alignment by presenting the second model in its e-tron product line. The Audi e-tron Sportback is a dynamic SUV coupé offering up to 300 kW of power and a range of up to 446 kilometers (277.1 miles) (in the WLTP cycle) from a single battery charge. Its digital matrix LED headlights are a new feature now available for the first time in a mass-production vehicle. Their light is broken down into tiny pixels and can be controlled with exceptional precision. This makes safe lane centering easier on narrow stretches of road and shows the position of the vehicle in the lane. The Audi e-tron Sportback can be ordered as of the end of November 2019. Market introduction in Europe is scheduled for the spring of 2020.

Elegant, efficient, expressive: the exterior design

The Audi e-tron Sportback combines the power of a spacious SUV with the elegance of a four-door coupé and the progressive character of an electric car. It is 4,901 millimeters (16.1 ft) long, 1,935 millimeters (6.3 ft) wide and 1,616 millimeters (5.3 ft) high. Its roof extends flat over the muscular body, dropping down steeply to the rear-in typical coupé style- and flowing into the steeply raked D-pillars. The lower edge of the third side window rises towards the rear-a typical Sportback feature.

With the octagonal Singleframe, the powerful contours above the wheels, and the sculptural rear end, the Audi e-tron Sportback is perfectly aligned with the brand's design idiom. Details signal to the outside world that the SUV coupé is fully electric. The largely enclosed Singleframe with its vertical struts is presented in a light platinum gray-a specific identifying feature of the e-tron models. In the lower area of the matrix LED headlights, four horizontal segments create the e-tron-specific signature in the daytime running lights. This is taken up at numerous points on the model and interpreted in three dimensions, for example, on the striking side sills. Their black inlays draw the eye to where the battery, and thus the energy center, of the Audi e-tron Sportback can be found. The designers also varied the signature at the broad diffuser, drawing attention to the absence of exhaust tailpipes. A light strip connects the LED lights to one another.

Not too crazy about the venetian blinds they put behind the grille.
