New Audi e-tron Sportback: electric crossover gets coupé-style roofline

Audi has revealed a coupé-style version of its electric crossover, with the e-tron Sportback featuring a sportier persona than its standard sibling.

The e-tron Sportback is the same length, width and height as its conventional counterpart but the sloping roof supported by the steeply raked D-pillars cuts rear headroom by 20 mm. Boot space, too, is slightly limited by the exterior styling.

However, the vehicle's slipperiness through the air has been improved from the standard model's drag coefficient of 0,27 to an even more impressive 0,25. This allows for an improved range of 446 km on a single charge (some 10 km more than the standard e-tron).

In 55 Quattro guise, the e-tron Sportback boasts 265 kW and 561 N.m, granting it a claimed 0-100 km/h time of 6,6 seconds. Switching to "boost mode" increases the peak outputs to 300 kW and 664 N.m for eight seconds, which improves the acceleration time to a claimed 5,7 seconds. This model features an asynchronous electric motor on each axle and a 95 kWh battery system.

The e-tron Sportback can also be specified in 50 Quattro form, with outputs of 230 kW and 540 N.m. In this variant, range comes in at 347 km on a single charge, while the obligatory sprint time is listed as 6,8 seconds.

Sportback adds style to Audi EV

Audi is expanding its electric vehicle portfolio with another battery-powered SUV.

Debuting at the Los Angeles Auto Show, the Audi e-tron Sportback is set to become available to select markets in 2020 and it combines sloping roofline styling with an advanced electric drive architecture.

Overall dimensions are akin to the long roof e-tron, with the Sportback version measuring 4.9 m bumper-to-bumper, 1.93 m across and standing 1.6 m tall.

Distinguishing the e-tron Sportback’s design are its Digital Matrix LED headlights, which feature 1 m active micromirrors. These electrostatically charged mirrors can pulse 5 000 times a second, allowing for advanced lights which can shape their illumination to beam around objects and even light specific sections of road.

Powering the e-tron Sportback is a 95 kWh battery pack, which energises individual motors on each axle, thereby ensuring that this futuristic Audi adheres to the brand’s Quattro all-wheel-drive heritage.

New Audi Concierge services aims to make EV transition easier

Whatsapp-based service connects E-tron customers to an EV expert who can answer queries

Audi has launched a new service via Whatsapp to offer assistance to drivers of its electric E-tron SUV.

Called E-tron Concierge, it allows drivers to contact Audi through the messaging app, putting them in touch with an EV expert to answer queries. "Users can send messages, photos, voice recordings and videos to the experts and expect to receive a response within minutes,” said Audi. The service is open every day of the week from 8am to 9pm.

Audi E-tron offers more range with upgrade

Technical improvements for electric SUV bring more miles per charge, while S line trim is added

Audi has upgraded its E-tron electric SUV to offer 15.5 miles of additional range through modifications to the braking system and drivetrain.

The upgrade means the range-topping E-tron 55 quattro can now travel 270.9 miles on the WLTP test cycle from a single charge, 20 more than the rival Mercedes-Benz EQC.

The upgrades are taken from the new E-tron Sportback, which was revealed earlier this month in Los Angeles. They include a reworked regenerative braking system that reduces residual brake torque - essentially friction caused by the proximity of the callipers to the discs - and the ability for the front electric motor to disconnect entirely from the power supply in normal running mode.

Plus, the adjustable regenerative braking is said to now offer greater distinction between the three modes, which Audi claims will offer drivers “a more pronounced ‘one-pedal feeling’”.

Audi also says that a reworked cooling system places less strain on the pump and that a function that harnesses waste heat from the battery packs to warm the interior could boost range by as much as 10%.

New Audi E-tron 50: entry-level EV SUV priced from £59,900

E-tron range now kicks off with the 190-mile 50 variant, which represents a saving of more than £7000

Audi has revealed UK pricing for the E-tron 50 – a cheaper and lighter entry-level version of its flagship electric SUV.

The new model is available from £59,900, including the government's £3500 plug-in car grant, representing a saving of £7445 over the E-tron 55. It will be available in four trim levels, with prices rising to £72,700 for the highly specified Launch Edition, which is marked out by black trim elements and bespoke 21in alloy wheels from Audi Sport.

Audi E-tron Sportback: electric coupe SUV priced from £79,900

Improved aerodynamics and rear-wheel drive bring extended 278-mile range for Audi's second EV

Audi has revealed prices for its second bespoke electric vehicle, the E-tron Sportback 55, will begin at £79,900 – a £9000 premium over the equivalent version of the standard E-tron.

The firm's new coupé-styled electric SUV is available from launch only in S-Line guise, which includes 21in alloy wheels, LED headlights, adapative air suspension and Audi Sport styling elements as standard. Prices rise to £85,185 for the limited-run Launch Edition, which gains its own set of bespoke sports wheels, contrasting black exterior trim, virtual door mirrors and a range of driver safety systems.

Revealed at the Los Angeles motor show last year, the coupe is the same weight, length and height as the E-tron and from the B-Pillar forward is identical. The lower part of the rear door, bumper and rear lights are also the same, while the obvious difference - the rear roof line - was cut from the A7.

First drive: 2020 Audi E-tron S Sportback prototype

New tri-motor layout gives electric SUV amazing torque vectoring capability

Engineers including Sir Alec Issigonis, who once reinvented the Mini Moke as an Arctic exploration device using dual 848cc engines with interconnected throttle cabling, have discovered that two combustion engines in one car is rarely worth the trouble.

Electric motors are proving to be much better suited to this approach, though. They’re easier to package, control and maintain than oily powerplants and offer crushing performance potential when teamed up, which is why spec sheet headliners such as the Tesla Model S and Porsche Taycan have one dedicated motor for each axle.

Independent drive units can also maximise traction or divide their efforts so that neither strays too often from its window of efficiency and therefore saps precious range. And as manufacturers are rapidly learning, control of individual axles can, if your engineers are clever enough, give even the most battery-bloated chassis an intravenous hit of agility.

At Audi, they’re cleverer than most, and so the E-tron S Sportback, seen here as a prototype in light camouflage but due to arrive in the spring, uses no fewer than three electric drive motors. The fastback SUV will be the first S-badged electric car to leave Ingolstadt, with the traditional increases in performance and handling.

Compared with the existing E-tron 55 quattro, whose MEB Evo platform has been carried over, the wheel-and-tyre package has been beefed up, as have the by-wire brakes and the cooling, while the air suspension has been tuned for even closer body control. Expect prices to start beyond £80,000, compared with £59,900 for the E-tron 55.

Audi e-tron S Sports SUVs Coming Soon

Audi has previewed sportier versions of its e-tron electric SUV. Meet the soon-to-be-revealed Audi e-tron S.

Given the instantaneous torque from an electric engine that is addictively good fun, it was only a matter of time before electric car makers started applying liberal doses of sportiness to its EV range.

Audi will be making S versions of its e-tron range and released some details and images of its forthcoming products. What you see here are prototypes wrapped in Audi's infamous testing colours. If you see a vehicle with a black, grey and orange colour scheme, it's most likely a new Audi product which is close to release.

The new Audi e-tron S will be available in 2 body styles. Audi claims this is a 3-motor electric setup with enhanced quattro and electric torque vectoring, and total outputs are rated at 370 kW and 973 Nm. Those are serious numbers and Audi claims a 0-100 kph sprint time of 4.5 seconds and a top speed of 210 kph. Interestingly, the car can only produce that insane amount of power and torque for a short period of time. Standard outputs are not too shabby either at 320 kW and 808 Nm. The secret to this performance is the addition of a 3rd motor. In the standard Audi e-tron, there are just the 2 motors producing 265 kW and 561 Nm, but in its sportiest of settings, it'll deliver 300 kW and 664 Nm.
