Audi and GridCars team up to install SA’s first 150kW ultra-fast EV chargers

South Africa’s electric car market might still be in its infancy, but Audi is pulling out all the stops to make a grand entrance this year. Not only is the German carmaker launching three new e-tron model lines in the coming months, but it will also be the first to introduce 150kW DC ultra-fast charging technology to the country.

Audi South Africa has teamed up with GridCars to install 70 new new EV public charging connectors at 33 locations around the country in order to expand on the existing public charging network for the benefit of not only Audi e-tron customers but all electric car drivers.

“These publically accessible charging stations will offer all EV consumers regardless of vehicle ownership, the latest, state-of-the-art charging technology available in South Africa, aiming to assist consumers with the adoption of electric mobility,” Audi said.

The ultra-fast DC chargers allow for impressively quick recharging. For instance an Audi e-tron 55, which has a 95kWh battery, can charge up from 10% to 90% in around half an hour, Audi says.

Audi is planning to install four of these 150kW ultra-fast charging stations along major highway routes such as the N1, N2, N3 and N4.

All charged up - Audi ready to install the first 150kW ultra-fast EV charger in SA

• Together with the launch of its electric cars in 2022, Audi will also erect several EV charging stations.

• The 33 charging stations will be installed in partnership with GridCars.

• The most powerful of these stations will have a direct current (DC) of 150kW.

Audi South Africa is embracing the switch to electric mobility by partnering with GridCars. Together, the two entities will install 33 new public charging stations for electric vehicles, comprising 70 charge connectors. The most powerful of these will be a 150kW public charger, a direct current (DC) that will allow for the fastest possible of your electric vehicle in South Africa.

To put it in perspective, the 150kW DC station will charge the Audi e-tron 55's 95kWh battery from 10% to 90% in approximately 30 minutes.

For Audi, they see it as imperative that they take the South African consumer by the hand as everyone warms up to the idea of electric vehicles.

Sascha Sauer, managing director of Audi South Africa, explains: "The investment and partnership with GridCars demonstrate our brand philosophy that the 'future is an attitude. As we prepare for the arrival of our e-tron range, we understand that there is more to be done as an automotive brand than simply providing the product. We must also enable and partner with those who can empower the transition to an electric future with ease and understanding. Our public chargers are new and incremental to the current EV charging network in South Africa."

Audi’s “Night of Progress” launches six e-tron models to SA

In an electrifying display, Audi South Africa hosted its “Night of Progress” event last week that saw six new e-tron models unveiled and launched for the South African market.

The event, held at the Zeitz MOCAA contemporary art museum, hosted 170 guests who were able to witness a grand ceremony showcasing the latest fully-electric e-tron models. In attendance were many industry players, influencers, media houses, and a few other key individuals. The luxurious RS e-tron GT was test-driven for the first time by celebrities, the media, and VIPs.

Globally, the fully electric range has had great success. The Ingolstadt-based manufacturer saw a 58% increase in its electric car deliveries in 2021. Audi has sold more than 52 000 e-tron units worldwide which, according to an Audi press release, accounts for two-thirds of its overall EV sales. The electric vehicle portfolio appears to have doubled in size over the past year.

The Audi e-tron lineup is as follows;

Audi updates equipment and prices of its lineup for 2023 model year

Not to be outdone by other automakers or the inflation, Audi has announced the new prices for its fleet starting in the second half of the year. Trying to sweeten the blow a bit the company also increased the levels of standard equipment. Audi tries putting a positive spin on the announcement by adding that by the end of 2022 it will be the luxury brand with the most electric vehicles sold - that is a one bold claim, time will tell if it is right. There are a bunch of changes, but our focus is obviously on Audi's e-Tron EVs.

The 2023 e-tron and e-tron Sportback from now on will come with black headliner as standard, 22” wheels are standard now with Prestige trim as well as orange brake calipers, rear side airbags, illuminated seat belt buckles and Matrix headlights. The e-tron S and e-tron S Sportback get carbon inlays and updated LED interior lights. In the US the federal tax credit remains in place and is worth $7,500.

E-tron GT gets plenty of updates as well - starting with the new grille that used to be gray, now it will come in the color of the car, passengers get a second charging port. Audi is also including anti-theft wheel bolts as standard and adds a TOLL module to the mirror for hassle-free cruising through the toll booths on 20” all season tires. Bang and Olufsen audio system is now standard and Prestige trim adds 21” wheels in bi-color black finish and to round it off the rear seats are now heated and the interior gets new LED lights.

REVIEW: Audi e-tron Sportback 55 impresses as an EV but it also makes us sad

Look, I understand the whole drive towards EVs, but for me it takes a lot of the fun out of driving. It’s not limited to Audi, mind you but there’s no soul, no individual character, no nuance to them and I can't help but think despite the different designs and interiors under the skin with batteries, they’re six of the one and half a dozen of the other.

It’s as if cars have just become appliances, tools to get from point A to point B. While we could say this about a Toyota Corolla one can’t say it about a classic Ferrari or even my old Land Rover. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn’t, but it has a personality. There are things about my car that are different to yours. Electric cars don't offer that.

It’s a sad reality for a petrolhead and as impressive as the the Audi e-tron Sportback 55 300kW quattro S line is, I want to turn the key or push the button and see the rev counter settle down for as long as I can.
The Audi e-tron Sportback 55 300kW quattro S line is priced at R2 115 00.

It has a five-year/100 000km Audi Freeway Plan and a battery warranty of eight years or 160 000km.
