A guiding Lichte: Meeting Audi's chief designer
Seven years into his tenure as Audi design chief, Marc Lichte is rising to the challenge of bringing the firm into the age of electric propulsion and autonomous technology
Designing radical Audi cars is nothing new for Marc Lichte. He has been doing it for most of his life. “I used to sketch designs when I was a young boy,” he says. “I was always dreaming of becoming a car designer – and, really, an Audi designer.”
That said, the transition from doodling while growing up in the West German town of Arnsberg to actually designing Audis took a little longer than Lichte had envisaged.
He recalls: “When I was studying design [at the Pforzheim University of Applied Sciences], I received sponsorship from Audi. Hartmut Warkuß got me a contract, but by the time I had finished my studies, he had moved with Mr [Ferdinand] Piëch to Wolfsburg to become head of Volkswagen design.
“I said: ‘Mr Warkuß, I want to start in Ingolstadt.’ But he told me that for two or three years I had to follow him in Wolfsburg and then I could go to Ingolstadt. It took me 17 years in Wolfsburg, but luckily it happened in 2014. I love it. I love what I’m doing here. I love the brand, and I want to bring Audi to the next level.”
To be clear, Lichte didn’t spend 17 unhappy years trying to escape Volkswagen: he had a very successful career there, eventually rising to exterior design chief. In that role, he shaped three generations of Golf (five, six and seven), the Touareg and the Arteon. And his circuitous route to Ingolstadt also meant that his arrival seven years ago came at a pivotal time for both Audi and the wider car industry.

Audi South Africa has committed itself to an all-electric future and will herald the new era in the first quarter of 2022. Come next year, Audi will launch its family of electric vehicles (EVs) in the country, all falling under the e-tron banner. In total, the automaker will launch six new vehicles across three different model ranges in SA.
The introduction of Audi's model range is more significant than just South Africa now having EV options from the Four Rings. By 2026, every new Audi launched on the global market will be all-electric, with most of Audi's markets only selling EVs by 2030. Therefore, Audi South Africa looks to be at the forefront of these goals and is readying itself and the local market for it.
Sascha Sauer, Head of Audi South Africa, says: "Across the world, the automotive industry is announcing plans to phase out combustion engines to advance the transformation of the industry for the future. As Audi South Africa, we see ourselves as being able to contribute to this global vision and have the responsibility to do that. Not only are we aligned with the importance of sustainability, but we have the technology, performance, and design credentials within our e-tron range to offer our premium customers an all-electric drive that will inspire and excite."
The e-tron range
2021 has been a big year for Audi South Africa, kickstarting it with the launch of 15 new models. At the event earlier this year, Audi SA confirmed that it would launch more models in the coming months and years, but has been rather coy about the e-tron. Now, though, it's been confirmed that not one model but the entire family of e-tron vehicles will be available on the local market.
This should give Audi the greatest choice of electric models of all automakers conducting business in South Africa. The upcoming e-tron line-up consists of:
• SUV category: Audi e-tron 50 and e-tron 55
• CUV category: Audi e-tron Sportback 55 and e-tron Sportback S
• High-performance category: Audi e-tron GT and Audi RS e-tron GT

Audi South Africa confirms E-Tron range introduction for Q1 2022
Audi South Africa has announced that it will be introducing three model line-ups to its local E-Tron offering with the goal to change the way South Africans view electric cars. Included in this roll-out will be the entry-level E-Tron in SUV and Sportback-guise as well as the E-Tron GT sedan.
Kicking-off Audi South Africa’s EV line up will be the E-Tron SUV in the 50 and 55 state of tune. The 50 employs a 71,2 kWh lithium-ion battery that delivers 230 kW and 540 N.m of torque to the Quattro system which results in a 0-100 km/h time of 6,8 seconds and a claimed electrical range of 341 km on a full charge. The 55 houses a 95 kWh battery with an output of 265 kW and 561 N.m to the Quattro system which gives the EV SUV a 0-100 km/h time of 6,6 seconds and a claimed range of 440 km on a full charge.
Those that desire more dynamic presence from the E-Tron will be able to purchase the Sportback variant in 55 and S trims. The 55 offers the same performance figures as the SUV but with a higher claimed range of 453 km while the S uses this same battery with a 370 kW and 808 N.m output giving it a 5,1 second 0-100 km/h time but a lower claimed range of 378 km.
Catering to the EV purists, Audi South Africa will also be introducing the current flagship E-Tron GT and RS E-Tron GT. The base-level trim utilises a 93,4 kWh battery to provide all four wheels with a power output of 350 kW and 630 N.m of torque. In boost mode, these figures are temporarily pushed up to 390 kW and 640 N.m which grants it a 0-100 km/h time of 4,1 seconds. Electrical range as claimed comes in at 488 km.

We took our Audi e-tron GT to Britain's first EV track day
A track day without noise complaints? Whatever next, an Audi outhandling a Porsche? Let’s come back to that later, shall we? But yes, no noise as this was the UK’s first ever EV-only track day, a zero emissions occasion unique not only for its lack of volume, but for the sight of the chief marshal trying in vain to find an exhaust pipe to insert his decibel meter into.
It was the brainchild of John Chambers, boss of Tevo Solutions, a company that tunes Teslas (not motors and batteries, just brakes and suspension). Rather predictably the pitlane was half Model 3s. But after that an eclectic mix that included a Renault Twizy, a couple of VW ID.3s, a BMW i3, a smattering of Porsche Taycans and a bloke with a converted Boxster running Tesla hardware and a 15kw battery.
Llandow circuit doesn’t have electric charging. The Boxster wised up first, bagged prime spot and shoved an extension lead through the meeting room window for a three-pin top-up. An e-Golf running track rubber thought he had it sorted by bringing along a generator, only to discover his car thought otherwise, refusing to accept kilowatts that had been created by petrol. At lunchtime tumbleweed blew through the pitlane as everyone else dashed off to find the nearest charger. Those that could.
Several people had discovered to their cost just how fast a heavy electric car can get through a front left tyre on a circuit that is largely made up of four right hand corners. There might not have been engine noise, but there had been plenty of tyre squealing.

The Audi e-tron GT will set you back R2 715 000 while the flagship RS e-tron GT boasts an asking price of R3 300 000. Audi also confirmed that e-tron owners would be able to charge their vehicles at these dedicated e-tron dealerships equipped with charging infrastructure ranging from DC 50 to 70kW.
