Here's how much you'll pay for Audi's 5 new electric cars in South Africa

Audi, BMW and Mercedes-Benz are set to significantly increase the number of electric vehicles available in South Africa during the course of 2022.

In Audi’s case, well-heeled South Africans can look forward to five new battery-powered model derivatives from within three model ranges, namely e-tron, e-tron Sportback and e-tron GT.

Audi South Africa announced the prices of these five models on Thursday, and buyers can expect to pay between R1.99 million and R3.3 million for their chosen e-tron model (see full price list below).

The importer has also opened up the order books, and customers are able to place their orders through any of Audi’s 10 e-tron dealerships around the country. Johannesburg and Pretoria each have three outlets while Cape Town and Durban have two. The dealerships will also have fast-charging facilities that are open to the public.

Customers will also receive one-year’s complimentary membership of the Gridcars network, which currently has over 280 universal charge point connectors around the country.

The Audi e-tron range will hit showrooms during the first quarter of 2022, and prices include a five-year/100 000km Freeway Plan and a battery warranty that’s valid for eight years or 160 000km.

Audi opens first lounge-style EV charging hub in Germany

Modular site can charge six EVs at rates of up to 320kW while hosting drivers in a lounge-style waiting room

Audi will next week open its first bespoke EV charging hub, which is planned to spearhead a complete network of lounge-style rapid-charging locations.

The pilot site, next to the exhibition centre in the German city of Nuremberg, will open to customers on Thursday 23 December, setting the tone for the design and functionality of Audi's charging hubs.

The hub aims to meet "customers' expectations of a premium charging experience", with drivers able to wait in a staffed 200-square-metre lounge while their vehicle charges. Audi envisages that customers will spend between 20-30 minutes at a time there.

The pilot hub can store some 2.45MWh (2450kWh) of electricity, supplied chiefly by a 200kW 'green power' connection to the grid, with a 30kW contribution from roof-mounted solar panels.

The six charging points at the pilot location can charge at speeds of up to 320kW, and Audi promises that up to 80 cars per day can use the site without reaching the limits of the energy storage system’s capacity combined with the hub’s 200 kW power input.

Audi's fastest-charging EV, the E-tron GT, can accept rates of up to 270kW, meaning it can gain around 62 miles of range in five minutes at the Nuremberg site.

Customers who have a Charging Service subscription through Audi can charge at 31 cents (26p) per kWh, which Audi says makes it "a real alternative to charging at home".

WATCH | A family of Audi e-trons spotted in Cape Town ahead of SA launch

Audi's family of electric vehicles will launch in South Africa this month.

Comprising several models, the line-up will be headlined by the RS e-tron GT.

South Africa has a small but effective portfolio of electric vehicles.

Ahead of its South African launch, a Wheels24 reader spotted a family of Audi e-trons on the back of a truck. Heading into Cape Town along the N2 next to the airport, the reader - who wishes to remain anonymous - spotted the rear of the RS e-tron GT first.

It is unclear where the truck was heading, but we suspect that these might be the vehicles that will form part of the automaker's e-tron launch in the city next week. For the event, Audi South Africa opted to launch the entire e-tron range at once, including the headlining RS e-tron GT model.

Priced at R3.3 million, the RS e-tron GT offers 440kW and 830Nm, allowing Ingolstadt's all-wheel drive star to go from 0-100km/h in just 3.3 seconds. The top speed is electronically limited to 250km/h. The driving range is a claimed 433-472km.

In November 2021, Wheels24 spent several days with the entry-level model in Audi's electric range, the e-tron 55 Quattro. For our impressions of that vehicle, you can click and read here.

Audi Global announced that from 2026 onwards, every new vehicle to come from the Four Rings would be electric. The decision will also affect South Africa, hence Audi's local arm is hard at work to ready its customer base for the transition. Audi believes that they need to hit the ground running and show their (electric) intent for our market.

Audi launches new e-tron line-up in SA, confirms 'at least one' new EV every year

• Audi has officially launched its e-tron range in South Africa.

• The all-electric line-up is headlined by the 440kW RS e-tron GT.

• Audi South Africa also partnered with GridCars to establish the most extensive charging network in the country.

Audi South Africa has officially launched its e-tron range in South Africa, heralding a new era of mobility for the Four Rings in the local market. This week, the brand launched six new electric vehicles (EVs) in Cape Town, headlined by the RS e-tron GT.

Called the 'Night of Progress', the event is also the launchpad for Audi SA as they adopt e-mobility, and Sascha Sauer, Head of Audi SA, is proud of what the automaker's local arm achieved.

He says: "Never has any automotive brand anywhere in the world launched this many electric vehicles in one go. And so, (the launch) was a historic moment not just for the Audi brand, but for South Africa too. By accelerating our transition towards e-mobility, we are fully embracing Audi's global mission in transforming towards being a provider of premium sustainable mobility and in line with our Brand's global commitments towards the Paris Climate Agreement."

Audi SA also confirmed that they will be launching at least one new EV per year.

Audi e-tron Prices in SA, Orders Open

South African buyers can now reserve an Audi e-tron model of their choice as the German firm introduces its new Electric Vehicle (EV) products on local soil.

Audi recently confirmed that it will launch no less than 6 e-tron derivatives locally early in Q1 2022 and interested buyers can now reserve their preferred e-tron model at one of Audi’s e-tron dealers across the country.

A total of 10 Audi e-tron dealerships are available to customers including 3 in Johannesburg, 3 in Pretoria, 2 in Durban and 2 in Cape Town. All these dealerships will offer public fast-charging facilities with a DC output between 50 and 75 kW.

In terms of additional support, customers will also receive a complimentary home check by an approved service provider to assess the home charging requirements. As a starting point, Audi will contribute up to R5 000 towards a 32Amps industrial socket which together with an Audi e-tron charger will deliver about 7.2 kW, translating into a 100% charge time of 13 hours. Of course, additional power upgrades can also be installed at the customer’s request.

As for public charging, Audi has partnered with GridCars and e-tron owners will have access to the growing network of public charging facilities around the country which currently stands at 280 charging points. Audi e-tron owners will receive an RFID charge card, complimentary 1-year membership to GridCars charging network and charging portal as well as a once-off charging voucher to get you started on your first charge at a public chagrin point.

Audi’s “Night of Progress” launches six e-tron models to SA

In an electrifying display, Audi South Africa hosted its “Night of Progress” event last week that saw six new e-tron models unveiled and launched for the South African market.

The event, held at the Zeitz MOCAA contemporary art museum, hosted 170 guests who were able to witness a grand ceremony showcasing the latest fully-electric e-tron models. In attendance were many industry players, influencers, media houses, and a few other key individuals. The luxurious RS e-tron GT was test-driven for the first time by celebrities, the media, and VIPs.

Globally, the fully electric range has had great success. The Ingolstadt-based manufacturer saw a 58% increase in its electric car deliveries in 2021. Audi has sold more than 52 000 e-tron units worldwide which, according to an Audi press release, accounts for two-thirds of its overall EV sales. The electric vehicle portfolio appears to have doubled in size over the past year.

The Audi e-tron lineup is as follows;

e-tron 55 First edition: R1 745 000
e-tron 55 Advanced: R1 990 000
e-tron 55 S line: R2 045 000
e-tron 55 Sportback S line: R2 115 000
e-tron Sportback: R2 425 000
e-tron GT: R2 715 000
RS e-tron GT: R3 300 000

The e-tron models will be supported by a five-year/ 100 000 km Audi Freeway Maintenance plan, as well a an eight-year/ 160 000km battery warranty.

Check out Ken Block’s new Audi RS e-tron GT company car

YouTube’s favourite slide-merchant clearly couldn’t resist the EV company car tax breaks

If you’re a regular user of this thing we call The Internet, you’ll no doubt know by now that Ken Block has become an Audi man. Heck, the Germans have even built him a car for his upcoming ‘Elektrikhana’ video – the S1 e-tron quattro Hoonitron.

But what will Mr Block drive day-to-day now that he’s parted ways with Ford?

Well, here’s your answer – a lightly-customised RS e-tron GT with a white wrap, Toyo tyres and Rotiform NGO wheels. Check out those AeroDiscs over the front wheels too. Ooft.

Turns out Ken quite likes extreme sports (who’d have guessed?) too, so he’s got a branded-up Audi roof box to house his snowboarding gear. Hope there’s plenty of fast chargers up in the mountains of Utah.

Fours to be reckoned with: Audi E-Tron GT vs Quattro

Quattro four-wheel drive is synonymous with Audi. How does the newest halo model stack up to the original legend?

Quattro: it’s a simple enough word. But those seven letters conjure up some of the most era-defining images in the automotive world: Walter Röhrl and Hannu Mikkola sideways on a world rally event, Gene Hunt in the BBC drama Ashes to Ashes or, more recently, Ken Block’s Hoonitron.

And then there’s the Mr Jones moment, where most of suburbia is crowded with four-wheel-drive versions of an Audi saloon outside an identikit home.

That last point is really the crucial one here, even if it is the most mundane. Despite Audi using the Quattro four-wheel drive system across the vast majority of its range, including in its humdrum 2.0-litre family saloon, the name still brings with it an air of mystique.

Essence d’Röhrl is infused across every Quattro-equipped Audi on every driveway or street corner, but with none of the brand dilution that you’d expect. Somehow Quattro stands for performance and allround capability and marks an aspirational moment in any company car executive’s career, despite Audi liberally sprinkling it across all sorts. BMW and Mercedes-Benz can’t get anywhere close to it.

So it is that we find ourselves in the windy Fens trying to answer a question: what does Quattro mean? In terms of bookends, we’ve got the perfect pair here in the shape of both the original and the latest. If anything is going to demonstrate the changing shape of both Quattro and the automotive world, it’s these two.

The original is the Quattro 10v, a road car that’s directly linked to the rally equivalent. In fact, it preceded the legendary Group A machine, coming as it did at the 1980 Geneva motor show and ahead of the rally car’s debut in autumn of that year.

The latest is the E-tron GT, Audi’s flagship battery-powered sports car that, unless you’ve been buried under a rock for the last year, you’ll know is based heavily on the smash-hit Porsche Taycan EV.
