Audi e-tron GT Concept

Audi offers $20K off the e-tron GT - is it enough to outrun Tesla Model S Plaid?

There's a popular idiom that states, "If you can't beat 'em, join 'em." But in the case of the ever-competitive electric car market, Audi seems to be taking a slightly different approach: "If you can't beat 'em, undercut 'em." Or at least try.

Audi's aggressive move comes in the form of a hefty discount available to US customers - up to €19,000 off its 2023 RS e-tron GT. Audi hopes that this price slash positions the e-tron GT as a direct rival to the behemoth in the segment, Tesla’s Model S Plaid. One could almost feel the shade Audi is desperately trying to throw.

So, what's on the table? The RS e-tron GT boasts an impressive array of features. From e-torque vectoring, the famous Quattro AWD, to a lightning-fast launch control trying to contain all of the 646 hp, that rockets the car from 0-60 mph in a scant 3.1 seconds. Under the hood, or rather, in the chassis, sits a 93 kWh lithium-ion battery, capable of delivering up to 383 km of EPA-rated range. In a hurry? The fast charge feature juices the battery from 10% to 80% in just 17 minutes - as long as you can find a 270 kW DC charger.

Inside the vehicle, Audi doesn't skimp on luxury. The cabin exudes that premium performance aura Audi is known for, complete with a customizable 12.3-inch digital instrument known as Audi’s Virtual Cockpit Plus. The design ensures drivers and their companions sit in a snug, sporty position. Of course, the ubiquitous wide center tunnel remains present, alongside the RS model's standard flat-bottomed steering wheel - fitted with a range of multifunction buttons.

Audi E-tron GT due redesign with 750bhp RS on the cards

Porsche Taycan sibling gains a series of efficiency updates, with potential for a 750bhp electric powertrain

The Audi E-tron GT will receive a host of eye-catching styling revisions as part of a mid-life facelift – which could include the arrival of a new RS variant with as much as 750bhp.

Planned for launch towards the end of 2024, the Tesla Model S rival was spotted undergoing its final stages of testing in Germany with very little camouflage covering its bodywork.

Our spy photographer’s images suggest that the design of the E-tron GT will be brought more in line with the all-new Audi Q6 E-tron SUV, which is set for launch in February 2024.

Want an RS e-tron GT in a winter jacket? Audi's got you... *covered*

It’s called the ‘Ice Race’ edition and just four of the allocated 99 examples will come to the UK, with pricing set at over £150k each

Audi has revealed a limited-run version of its four-door RS e-tron GT called the ‘Ice Race’ edition. It pays homage to the 40th anniversary of the annual GP Ice Race at Zell am See in the Austrian Alps and will be priced at £150,630 a pop. Just 99 examples will be made, with four coming to the UK.
Let’s attempt to declutter the silly exterior, shall we? The main colour coat is Florett Silver metallic, which has been given a black CFRP roof and then foil-wrapped with silver and white accents, which act as references to snow crystals and ice lakes. Why stop there, Audi? A few polar bears and penguins wouldn’t have hurt.

Violet detailing also resides, which is meant to resemble the bright-blue-coloured, oversized sunglasses that are worn by winter athletes (and those who think they’re winter athletes because they once fell off a slope). The final exterior changes include dark privacy glass and 21in black alloys.

The theme continues inside the Ice Race edition, with a diamond silver and black seat design complemented by violet stitching. The Fine Nappa leather also extends along sections of the centre console, instrument panel and doors. You also get diamond silver and violet stitching on the floor mats, which will probably ditch the winter design for an autumnal one after you make a few trips to the park.
