audi-introduces-new-model-naming-system

My mistake. I didn't even realised it changed. Not a big change though. And does this apply or all models or just the lower end of the spectrum.

Since turbos on every engine, who knows. Probably applies across the board now.

I think it is pretty disingenuous of Audi to start with 30. I mean at least try and be "close" the the equivalent naturally aspirated engine capacity, like BMW using 116i and 118i both for a 1.6 turbo. Or 335i for a 3.0L turbo. All 2 litres should be 2x to 30. All 1litres should be 1x to 20.

They are jumping too far into fiction with this naming scheme without a transition period like BMW and Merc.

So let me get this straight...
For example, a 2L engine can provide an output of anything from 100kw to 250kw+. But naming your cars by engine size if preferred because then you can be assured of the engine size and have varied real world performance? But name your cars by performance so you know what you're getting in the real world is dishonest/disingenuous/etc? You guys crack me up

Going to be fun when you want to buy your 0L, all electric, Audi S0

Erm, they have?

16, 18, 20, 23, 25, 28, 30, 35, 40, 45 are all engine capacity

316 - 1600
318 - 1800
320 - 2000

You get the idea.

It has moved on to be indicative of "approximate power of equivalent N/A engine" type thing.
For example the current 2.0L BMW 330i makes about as much power as the last 3.0L BMW did.
Merc's naming convention is something similar.

Audi starting from 30 is just to get a bigger number out there.

Look I get the idea of what you are saying, but how does
30 for models with between 81 and 96kW (107 and 127bhp)
even make sense? The 30 isn't linked to engine size or power output as far as I can see, but it does immediately make you think of a 3.0litre engine (when referring to cars as in this thread)

If a 2.0L produces 200kw+, you would more than likely notice a Turbo badge somewhere, or some badge to indicate performance engine, like STI, WRX, or whatever.

Best go tell Renault the 1007 implies they are selling cars with a 100.7L engine. Or Peugeot with the 3008 and its 300.8L engine...

No. Renault never dropped a press release saying the name had anything to do with engine size or performance.

So you're telling me the badge gives you a better understanding of the cars real world performance? Just like.....

Sorry I was under the impression that the plebs on the roads used car badge numbers to determine engine size.

No. Plebs drive things like Renaults and Toyotas, we know what is what. People who seek cachet rather chase the brand and the badge, and end up with a product from VAG.

?

You still haven't explained how the 30 relates to performance of the 1.6litre engine capacity. Other than that you and VAG agree it's a completely arbitrary number designed to obfuscate and confuse?

If anything, I'd rather have a badge indicating engine displacement, than approximate performance.
