Audi Q4 E-tron Sportback: electric SUV will be revealed tomorrow

Audi's third electric SUV will be unveiled on Tuesday evening; latest spy shots preview Jaguar I-Pace rival's design

Audi will unveil the third member of its E-tron electric car family - the Q4 E-tron Sportback SUV - tomorrow evening.

The Jaguar I-Pace rival was recently seen in disguised prototype form, showing design familiarity with the larger E-tron Sportback SUV-coupé. Audi confirmed via social media that the production model will be shown at a virtual world premiere, beginning at 6:15pm UK time.

Details of the new electric model are yet to be revealed, but we can glean some information about the production car from last year's Q4 E-tron concept. That's 4.59m long and 1.9m wide - slightly shorter and wider than today’s Audi Q5. Comparing the concept and spied prototype suggests the overall shape hasn’t changed dramatically.

Audi Q4 E-tron Sportback leaks online ahead of unveiling today

Audi's third electric SUV will be unveiled on Tuesday evening; new images show Jaguar I-Pace rival's design

Audi will unveil the third member of its E-tron electric car family - the Q4 E-tron Sportback SUV - this evening, but a pair of images leaked online have lifted the lid on its styling.

The Jaguar I-Pace rival was recently seen in disguised prototype form, showing design familiarity with the larger E-tron Sportback SUV-coupé. Audi confirmed via social media that the production model will be shown at a virtual world premiere, beginning at 6:15pm UK time.

Pictures posted online by Instagram user wilcoblok look to be taken from the car's official launch brochure, and reveal that the original concept's styling has largely been retained for the production car.

Technical details of the new electric model are yet to be revealed, but we can glean some information about the production car from last year's Q4 E-tron concept. That's 4.59m long and 1.9m wide - slightly shorter and wider than today’s Audi Q5.

New Audi Q4 Sportback E-tron concept revealed as preview of 2021 model!

Audi has whipped the wraps off its new Q4 Sportback E-tron concept, which effectively previews the 2021 production version of the sleekly styled electric crossover.

The Ingolstadt-based firm says the fresh-faced Q4 Sportback E-tron concept is the “identical twin” of 2019's Q4 E-tron concept from a “technical perspective”, but obviously features a different profile thanks to its coupé-like body style.

Audi says this gives potential Q4 customers “the opportunity to start thinking about which version they prefer roughly a year before the first vehicles will be delivered”.

The MEB-based siblings are almost identical in terms of exterior dimensions; with a length of 4 600 mm, the Sportback is some 10 mm longer than the standard model. They furthermore share drive technology: a pair of electric motors generating a total system output of 225 kW. The electric motor at the rear boasts peak outputs of 150 kW and 310 N.m, while the item on the front axle supplies its wheels with up to 75 kW and 150 N.m.

Audi Q4 Sportback e-tron Concept

From a technical perspective, they are identical twins, but in terms of their shape, they each have their own unmistakable and characteristic features: The Audi Q4 e-tron concept gave visitors to the 2019 Geneva Motor Show a taste of the first compact electric SUV from Audi. With the Q4 Sportback e-tron, the brand is now presenting the second model of the product line that will go into production in 2021 as an SUV Coupé.

This gives potential Q4 customers the opportunity to start thinking about which version they prefer roughly a year before the first vehicles will be delivered: the versatility and robustness of the classic SUV or the dynamic elegance of the Coupé variant. The dimensions of the two Q4 models are almost identical: With an exterior length of 4.60 meters (15.1 ft) and a height of 1.60 m (5.2 ft), the Sportback is one centimeter (0.4 in) longer and flatter. The Q4 variants are identical in terms of their width of 1.90 m (6.2 ft) and their wheelbase of 2.77 meters (9.1 ft).

The two concept cars, which are already offering a clear look ahead at the top-of-the-range engine line-up of the coming series production model, also have the same drive technology. Two electric motors mobilize 225 kW of system output in the Q4 and Q4 Sportback e-tron concept. As is typical for Audi, the driving power is brought to the road with quattro all-wheel drive. Thanks to excellent traction, both versions of the Q4 accelerate from zero to 100 km/h (62.1 mph) in just 6.3 seconds. Top speed is restricted to 180 km/h (111.8 mph).

New Audi Q4 E-tron Sportback: production version spotted

Audi’s coupe-styled Q4 E-tron is seen for the first time ahead of production debut in 2021

Audi’s fourth electric SUV, the Q4 E-Tron Sportback, has been caught in disguise on public roads for the first time ahead of it going on sale in 2021.

The Tesla Model Y rival will be sold in both normal and Sportback coupe form. The former was first previewed by a concept at the 2019 Geneva motor show, while the latter was shown in concept form back in July.

New Audi Q4 E-tron hits the road disguised ahead of 2021 debut

Standard-roof version of Q4 E-tron is seen for the first time after coupe-styled Sportback version, ahead of production debut in 2021

Following earlier sightings of Audi's Q4 E-tron Sportback in prototype form, the standard SUV version has also been spotted undergoing winter testing in Sweden.

The firm's third and fourth electric SUVs will go on sale roughly at the same time. Original intentions were for an unveiling early next year and an on sale date before the summer, but it's not clear if the impact of the pandemic will cause delays to that schedule.

The Q4 E-tron will feature a more upright roof design than the previously seen Sportback prototypes. While that means a less rakish look, it should translate into increased rear seat room for taller adults and a slightly larger boot.

Look inside the new Audi Q4 e-tron SUV

Audi’s next electric SUV will be revealed soon. Here’s what it looks like inside

Audi has only just launched a new EV – the e-tron GT – but already it’s starting the drawn-out process of revealing its next one. This time around it’s a small SUV called the Q4 e-tron, as previewed by a concept of the same name at the Geneva Motor Show in 2019, then as a coupe-ified Sportback version a year or so later in July 2020.

We won’t see the Q4 e-tron sans camouflage until next month (but as you can probably tell, it’ll look almost exactly like the concept). For now all Audi wants to talk about is the interior and a bit of headline tech.

First drive: 2021 Audi Q4 E-tron prototype

SUV shares underpinnings with Volkswagen ID 4; will offer a range of up to 310 miles

With its battery mounted low and evenly balanced weight distribution, the Q4 E-tron’s handling is well controlled, with responsive turn-in and little body roll, as well as strong grip and excellent traction in tighter corners.

The sports suspension, as fitted to our prototype, brings a 15mm drop in ride height. It can be ordered with adaptive damping control in combination with a drive select programme offering four different modes: Efficiency, Comfort, Dynamic and Individual, which the driver can configure.

With optional 20in tyres of 235/50 profile at the front and 255/45 at the rear, the Q4 E-tron’s ride remains fairly compliant on most surfaces in Comfort mode, although its hefty kerb weight does occasionally conspire to upset the experience over rougher roads.

New Audi Q4 e-tron details drop: AR head-up display, 11,6-inch screen

Audi has released fresh information about its upcoming Q4 e-tron, the next model to feature in the German firm’s broad electrification strategy.

While the company has yet to confirm exact details of the electric powertrain, it has revealed the Q4 e-tron will be offered with fresh options such as an augmented reality head-up display and the largest display yet seen in an Audi.

Set to follow the e-tron, e-tron Sportback and e-tron GT, Audi says the all-electric Q4 e-tron compact crossover boasts a spaciousness that “far exceeds the current class boundaries”.

Measuring 4 590 mm long, 1 865 mm wide and 1 613 mm tall, the Q4 e-tron rides on the VW Group’s MEB platform, boasting a wheelbase of 2 760 mm. The Ingolstadt-based firm says the newcomer’s cabin features a “generous amount of storage compartments”, which add up to a volume of 24,8 litres. The luggage compartment, meanwhile, swallows a claimed 520 litres, a figure that swells to 1 490 litres with the split-folding rear bench dropped flat.

Audi Q6 E-tron: Porsche Macan EV sibling confirmed for 2022

Joint-developed PPE platform will underpin luxury EVs from both firms, including mid-sized Audi SUV

Audi and Porsche are sharing development of a new Premium Platform Electric (PPE) architecture, and one of the first Audi models to use the new underpinnings will be the Q6 E-tron SUV.

Confirmed for launch in 2022 by Audi CEO Markus Duessman, the new model will sit between the imminent Q4 E-tron, which uses the VW Group's MEB platform, and the full-sized E-tron flagship, which is based off a modified version of the MLB SUV architecture. It will be built in Ingolstadt, where Audi is also building a new battery production facility to serve its expanding EV line-up.

It will serve as a sister car to the promised electric version of the Porsche Macan - in much the same way as Audi's new E-tron GT saloon shares the bulk of its make-up with Porsche's Taycan. As was the case with those two cars, the Porsche will arrive several months before the Audi.

The PPE architecture - based on the J1 platform used for the Taycan and E-tron GT - is designed for full-sized luxury models from the two firms, both in low-slung and SUV forms. The electric Macan was first revealed by Autocar in October 2018 and quietly previewed by Porsche late last year.

Porsche has confirmed that the current, combustion-engined Macan will initially remain on sale alongside the all-new electric car, paving the way for Audi to keep the same-sized Q5 in dealerships beyond the launch of the Q6 E-tron.

Audi gives us a peek at its first compact electric vehicle, the new Q4 e-tron

Audi has released the first teaser image of its upcoming Q4 e-tron compact SUV ahead of its debut next Wednesday, April 14.

The Q4 e-tron will be Audi’s first compact electric car and it follows in the footsteps of the larger e-tron and e-tron Sportback SUVs as well as the e-tron GT saloon. Unlike its aforementioned siblings, however, the Q4 e-tron will be based around Volkswagen’s MEB platform, which also underpins the VW ID.3 and ID.4.

Judging by the teaser pic, the e-tron will be offered in two body styles - namely a conventional-bodied SUV and a Sportback derivative with a coupe-inspired sweeping roofline.

We already have a good idea of how the Q4 e-tron will look thanks to the Q4 and Q4 e-tron concept cars that were unveiled in 2019 and 2020 respectively.

The two battery-powered SUVs will aim to lure buyers from the Tesla Model Y and perhaps even Ford’s Mustang Mach E.

Audi Q4 e-tron revealed in SUV and Sportback guise

The Audi Q4 e-tron SUV and Sportback have been revealed two years after the concept broke cover. The newest members in the e-tron family will be Audi’s entry-point to its electrified line-up, for now as it competes in the A+ segment.

Three drive variants are available for the Audi Q4 e-tron. The entry-level 35 e-tron model uses a rear-wheel drive configuration that receives 125 kW and 310 N.m of torque from a 52 kWh battery, giving it a 0-100 km/h sprint time of 9,0 seconds and a top speed of 160 km/h. The flagship 50 e-tronderivative produces 220 kW and 460 N.m of torque from a 77 kWh battery to all four wheels. In here, you can reach 0-100 km/h in 6,2 seconds until you hit a top speed of 180 km/h. At the middle of the range sits a Q4 45 e-tron variant with a 150 kW power output.

Range is quoted at 341 km for the 35 and 520 km for the 50 with a fast charging ability that can restore 130 km of range in 10 minutes.

Local introduction and pricing for the Audi Q4 e-tron range is yet to be announced.

New 2021 Audi Q4 E-tron is premium-focused VW ID 4 sibling

Entry-level Audi EV majors on quality and interior space and offers a range of up to 295 miles

Audi has revealed the production-ready Q4 E-tron before UK deliveries of the electric SUV begin in the second half of 2021.

The Q4 is Audi’s fourth dedicated electric vehicle, following the E-tron, E-tron Sportback and recently unveiled E-tron GT, and it's the first to be based on parent company Volkswagen Group’s MEB electric vehicle platform - as used for the Volkswagen ID 4 and Skoda Enyaq.

The Q4 E-tron is produced in two distinct bodystyles: the standard SUV model places its emphasis on overall practicality, while a sleeker, rakish-roofed Sportback model aims for a more sporting market position.

The production versions retain largely the same design as their respective concepts, with a bluff front end dominated by a blanked-off grille, heavily structured air ducts, angular headlights with LED functionality, a contoured bonnet and deeply etched swage lines above each wheel arch. They are further differentiated by way of a subtly different treatment for the front bumper and grille.

Audi reveals electric Q4 e-tron SUV, but it’s not for South Africa

Audi has expanded its electric car portfolio with the release of its first-ever Q4 e-tron, and as expected it comes in two flavours - conventional SUV body and coupe-inspired Sportback.

Sadly, the new Q4 models are not destined for South Africa at this stage, according to our contacts at Audi SA, although local buyers can at least look forward to the larger e-tron SUV.

Unlike the latter, however, the Q4 models are based around the Volkswagen Group’s MEB platform, a modular architecture that was designed for electric cars only.

Buyers in Europe will get to choose between two single-engined, rear-driven options - an entry model with 125kW and a midrange contender with 150kW on tap. But the real fun starts with the top model that sports two electric motors - creating an electrified equivalent to quattro - and with a system output of 220kW. The latter can accelerate from 0-100km/h in 6.2 seconds, according to claims, while the 150kW does that dash in 8.5 seconds and the 125kW model in 9.0 seconds.

Audi Q4 Sportback 50 E-tron quattro 2021 review

Should I buy one?

Pricing for the Q4 Sportback E-tron quattro is yet to be revealed, although Audi says it is likely to come in at around £1500 above its SUV equivalent, which should put the model driven here at around £53,000.

The Q4 E-tron is well thought out and thoroughly well executed. It is not tremendously engaging to drive, but in top-of-the-line 50 E-tron guise, it delivers strong performance, responsive handling and a nicely refined ride. Its biggest drawcards, though, are its roomy interior, generous accommodation by class standards and, on initial impressions, overall quality. It's a likeable car that feels as much at home around town as it is out on the open road.

A4 E-tron platform could give Porsche a BMW i4 rival

£50,000 starting price target for proposed new Porsche EV

Porsche is building a business case for a seventh model line that could allow it to challenge the Tesla Model 3 and BMW i4 with an electric fastback-style saloon closely related to Audi’s A4 E-tron.

It is proposed that the new model will use the PPE platform developed in partnership by Porsche and Audi and sit beneath the Taycan at a starting price of around £50,000 in the UK.

Details remain scarce, although there have been suggestions that the new model might take the Cajun name first trademarked by Porsche in 2011. Insiders have told Autocar that Porsche’s third pure-electric model has been earmarked to share key platform, driveline and battery components with the upcoming Macan EV – alongside which it is expected to be produced at Porsche’s Leipzig plant in Germany.

One engineer said: “The modular nature of the PPE platform will allow us to extend our electric car line-up with a range of different models. It is engineered for standard and high ground clearance. A second sedan [saloon] model is one possibility.”

Audi Q4 e-tron Review 2021

WHAT IS THE VERDICT?

“Decent powertrain happily takes a back seat to dependable quality. This is where the electric vehicle hits the mainstream”

The Q4 e-tron truly heralds the next generation of electric vehicles – not because of any new technology, or space age looks, but rather in its overwhelming ordinariness. Sounds like we’re damning with faint praise, but this is a genuinely interesting moment – Audi thinks that it’ll shift 20,000 of these in its first full year on sale (2022), catapulting it to second place in the company sales charts behind the A3. This is the moment that the EV reaches the mainstream.

The Q4 e-tron’s success will come because it is relentlessly capable – easy to live with as a car full stop. If you’re making the switch to electric it’s a great place to start, a nifty blend of EV glamour and SUV practicality.

The small SUV is the best blend of big-enough-to-squeeze-in-a-load-of-batteries and small-enough-to-be-manageable and gingerly sidesteps the inherent tension in going electric to try and save the planet but doing it in a ginormous SUV. There’s enough range here too that you can forget about the driving and cut loose a little.

The Q4 e-tron is the perfect car for those punctual adopters who have watched others try things out. You’ll probably still get on better with it if you’re able to charge at home, but the UK infrastructure is improving all the time – it’s definitely the moment to consider the switch.
