10 year old Audi A5 suddenly gave an "emission control" warning on the dash and subsequently stopped driving.

Vehicle was taken to Racing Technik who advised "Timing slipped and a new timing kit is required ... We performed a diagnostic scan on the vehicle and encountered an error code P0016 Crankshaft Position-Camshaft Position Correlation Bank 1. We then performed a compression check on the combustion chambers with the following readings.

  1. Cylinder 1 = 26 PSI
  2. Cylinder 2 = 49 PSI
  3. Cylinder 3 = 50 PSI
  4. Cylinder 4 = 49 PSI
We then conducted a wet compression test to assess it the compression loss may be piston rings or valves related. This test lead us to believe that valves are bent on each of the pistons. Since this is a mechanical failure, we can only answer in certainty the extent of the damage once we removed the cylinder head. Please find attached the estimate of the repairs we envisage to get the car running again in top condition. We added the rockers and lifters to the list and we can remove or adjust the list of parts once we scrutinised the findings"

Their current repair estimate comes to a whopping R80k

They get good reviews all round - but not being a car fundi - can anyone recommend a different workshop for a second opinion / and or a 'mechanic consultant' who can inspect the vehicle where it is currently and comment on their proposed course of action ( almost like an assessor )

I just picked up my landy from RT this afternoon.

Having seen the quality of their work, and spoken at length with the owner, I would not hesitate to recommend them.

80k for an engine rebuild on a 10-yr old Audi engine (you don't say which one) sounds reasonable to me.

look, their prices might be a bit higher than others, but the quality of the work will be there.
 
I would imagine the 80k quote is the absolute worst case scenario and it sounds like they are prepared for there to be less damage potentially.

Doesn’t sound unreasonable.

It seems utterly bizarre that a car with just 65k on the clock can have catastrophic engine failure like this.

Doing some research - this appears to be a known issue overseas with the timing chain with Audi even settling class action lawsuits:

Does anyone know if a recall was done in SA ? Did Audi locally ever acknowledge any problems ? Is there any recourse ?

Has anyone experienced anything similar ?

Sorry to hear your predicament op, maybe cheaper to find a 2hnd engine or sell as is/for spares.
 
1.8/2.0T CDA engine? Good luck, biggest piece of crap I've ever owned. Major oil consumption issues, timing chain issues, the thing cooked its plastic water pumps every 18 months, you've also going to be visiting RT for regular carbon blasting on the intake valves. VWSA and the Ombudsman showed me the middle finger.

Nope, and this was a good few years ago. I even offered to pay for the parts if they'd just come to the party with discounted labour, no joy.
The ombudsman would take several months to respond to emails, I can only imagine it's worse these days.
