Why use S over D?

I've always thought that S changes later and carries each gear to the red line - but they both change virtually the same point when planting it. S can also change at 3,000rpm if you drive casually.

The only real difference I see is the downshifting, where S holds the revs when you pull off and D shifts to the next gear

S for me is madness all the time, whereas D is quite civilised. I've found D to change up when flooring it before the red line.. but I'd have to investigate further.

I'm slotting straight from D to S - so auto.

Don't think you can go manual to S

Yea I think it's 3 separate modes that you have to select - Drive, Sport and Manual.

But I don't see a large difference, other than holding revs

And not in S? That sucks, I was told that it does allow you to do that. Oh well.

Manual mode is manual mode is manual mode. What would the difference be? The difference between S and D is for auto mode... Shift points etc. In manual mode, you control those.

True. Just thought that it may add something to manual mode.

D adapts to your driving style over time so if you're aggressive most times when in D then you'll see little difference between S and D. In my car there's night and day between S and D where my D is very lazy and more comparable to another mode in my car, E (for Economy).

M can imply S depending on why you shifted to M as you control all the action.
