Audio Video upgrade advice

@Dolby

Will try and assess my options for a true 100hz but i just got to keep the budget (R7K) into account.

not fussed about brands of receivers so i am look for suggestions - may even look at a all in one kits but i do have a ps3 which i am prepared to use for blueray so some of the kit may go to waste

i also want recommendations on wifi routers (with a 3g option if possible) but also want to see if anyone has some advice on powerline networking

Hi Mys,

Here's my recommendations for you :

1. TV : Samsung D6000 3D LED TV - brilliant for what you get
2. Wifi router : If you don't want wires running through your house, get yourself the 8ta 60GB data bundle and a Huawei B683 router. The router supports 300Mbps wireless speeds and 28Mbps HSDPA speeds. Best 3G router out there at the moment.
3. Receiver/Amplifier : Sony's latest range of AV Receivers are cheap, offers a lot of bang for your buck and getting rave reviews from pro AV review sites and magazines. I've got a Yamaha Receiver and extremely happy with it, but might be out of your budget.

Maybe wait for the February clearance sales before pulling the trigger on all the hardware?

You might be very surprised with how much you will save.

Ooh that PS51D550 51" FHD 3D LED plasma going for R8.2k or so at FotoDiscount must be tempting!

Your budget for amp and 2.1 speakers is quite tight. You could perhaps look at something like this:
http://www.fotodiscountworld.com/catalog/product_info.php/cPath/21_37_311_114/products_id/1524

Then add some Wharfedale Diamond bookshelf speakers:
http://www.pqsound.co.za/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=121_122&products_id=628

You can then always add a sub later on. You willl then have a decent receiver with 4 hdmi inputs (I think) and great upgrade possibilities.

The other alternative is to buy second hand. Check out the classifieds section of http://www.avforums.co.za/ as well as http://www.avsa.co.za/smalls.php?type=1.

The avforums is also actually a better place to ask for advice on this.

Postman strikes again ;)

+1000 So self evident PP must have lost his bottom post or his top and bottom posts are looking for each other. In one he says "better let those who owns a plasma comment..." and the next moment he says "you dont have to own one to comment..."

Do the new Sonys at least do HDMI switching now?

Not a home theatre in box though - just the amplifier to switch AV sources

I remember they couldn't do it in the past.

There is a guy in the office that wants an amp to switch HDMI .... And I'm guessing Sony is the best value if it does that?

You cannot work out the difference? Do you know modern plasmas are prone to burn-in like you make it out to be? We are talking normal use here, not abuse.

Let me explain, taking the forum as an example. Samsung 6 Series and up have a track record of being good TVs, with many owners commenting on them in detail. Modern plasma has a track record of burn-in being a non issue (unless abused).

But you wouldn't be able to show me anyone commenting on it.

I hope you can work out the difference now.

The cheapest switching amp ... Not HTiB, but actual amplifier.

I guess mid level?

Wait... I think you mean repeating? Because switching is pass-through, right? In which case my reply: Recent mid - high Sony HDMI AVRs have always had repeating.
