Hi folks

Here are the latest traffic stats for August. Thanks for your continual support of MyADSL and for making this such an informative and addictive online community.

We are planning a slight change to the home page to better accommodate advertising (we need to ensure financial stability), but it will definitely not involve any intrusive advertising like shaking banners etc.

I am also glad to announce that we are about to sign an agreement with INet-Bridge that will give us access to IT stories from a few prominent sources. While this service costs a few thousand rand per month, we feel that it might provide our readers with better news coverage and therefore more up-to-date information. We will trial this service for three months after which we will assess its impact (whether we can justify the additional costs).

Your feedback is most welcome as usual.

Regards,

RPM

Sounds pretty good rpm :)

The Inet-bridge side sounds especially interesting. Hope to see some nice stuff coming our way.

Hmmmmmm...... a few thousand per month eh... sounds a bit excessive?! There must be cheaper ways, I mean, ffs a community site paying that amount? Aaai. Rather use google alerts. If Hellkom had to pay for news, the site would be either way out of date or no site at all!

It does sound a bit excessive but on the other hand if it saves time on the administrative side i.e. manually searching for and linking articles then perhaps it's worth it. As rpm said it's a trial so no harm in trying it out :)

Well,
Would it be much to enquire what is being made on advertising vs the running costs? I feel this should be freely availiable.

Hi guys

Perdition: Correct. Cara also has less time now to write articles as she accepted an offer from UJ. Lets see it if adds value to the site and evaluate again after three months.

Karnaugh: I wish I knew what our balance sheet looks like. We have a main account for the site (into which advertisers deposit money), but most of the deductions (like Hosting, Adwords, Funnel, Admin costs etc.) comes from other accounts. We have signed the final registration papers yesterday so we should have a registered company soon which should solve this problem.

What I can however say is that nobody is getting rich from the site. While the mods, Cara and others spend many hours per day working for the site (and in most cases it is simply work), nobody pulls a salary and even the sporadic small gifts to these people to thank them is not always enough. I wish we were in a position to at least cover the costs of people that help out, but currently we need to make certain we can cover all our costs and add value to the site first. It is certainly not easy to provide a professional service while the admin, mods etc. are all working other jobs, but I think so far they have done a tremendous job.

RPM

Hello RPM,

My service is for free. Let me make that clear. :)
However, I reckon RPM should spoil Cara with a nice romantic dinner at a posh restaurant on our account or a weekend away at a nice spa or both.
Just to show her how we appreciate her well written news articles. It's a suggestion. ;)

Nice stats there RPM. How many GB's did we consume last month? Just amend the original post. Ta.

Have a nice day all.
BTTB.

Thanks to all the people working in the background and who does not always get the recognition they deserve.

I never even suspected such a thing :)

But its hard to have an oppinion on spending "thousands of rands" on web article feeds when we have no idea whats going on there :P

Thanks a million to the whole team.

I have learned a lot and will continue to spread the word

Thanks for all the hard work you guys put into the site. I really appreciate all the information and technical help that is available with regards to ADSL and the situation with regards to Telkom in SA.

I too will continue to spread the word about the good work you guys are doing. :)

Heck, give it a bash for 3 months, its advertisers money so why not.
If it doesnt deliver, it can always be cancelled, no harm no foul.
If it furthers 'the cause' (has a nice ring to it hehe) then great!

Hi Sneeky

My thoughts exactly :D We are currently struggling for time to get all the news out as Cara is now working close to a full time job at the University, so this can really assist us to keep the news fresh with less work than previously. It should also add another angle to the news section which is always of value.
