I happen to think that John Howard has done a sterling job of running Australia.
The difference there is that Australian elections do not need special observers, the leading party does not bus in supporters from other areas to opposition rich areas, there are no threats of violence or withholding of food to opposition supporters and there are no "lost" ballot boxes from areas that have a majority opposition bias.
Then, the majority of voters come from generations that invented the democratic system and thus can understand the politics; tribal affinity is not the major card. The party leaders do not attempt to buy votes by promising free houses and cars and jobs etc (except the communist parties - they will promise anything for power).
In other words, things are not equal and if the Aussies want JH for another 3 more years, good on them mates
